Firkin at the Half Acre tap room. 13oz snifter.
A - Tan foam settles to a thick collar, wisps, and splotches of lace. Lightly hazed dark amber-brown body.
S - Smells like Ginger Twin, but with a nice ginger ale kick to it. There's a hefty dose of caramel, brown sugar, and fruity malts balanced by zesty citrus and mild pine hoppiness. The ginger adds a nice twist to things, but never overpowers.
T - Taste is similar, and quite enjoyable. A nice mix of red fruit, burnt sugar, and toffee malt sweetness, ginger, citrus zest, and moderate piney hop bitterness. No discernible alcohol here, and the ginger is well-integrated into the flavor profile.
M - Medium body, with some some surprising grit for a cask beer. There's the expected lower carbonation, and a nice chewy, hearty texture to it.
D - I was initially lukewarm to this when it was announced last night, but it was surprisingly enjoyable. The amount of ginger used was spot on and worked seamlessly with the existing flavors. If I had been in less of a hurry I would have happily consumed a second glass. Might make a nice one-off bottling, but at the very least I hope they revisit this concept for a future Firkin Friday.
