Have been past this place to go to bars in the area many times. I decided to stop in to see what specialty beers they had. They had a selection of about 4 specialty beers that were growler only and they were very interesting. The staff was very friendly and helped out with the tasting. Free tasting even without a tour. Simple store front with just there beer and merch. No food or anything else to take away from the beer that they are very serious about. There year round beers are available to buy or you can get one of the special taps in a growler.
Overall a great brewery.

Finally getting around to reviewing Half Acre, and their new(ish) tap room next door.

The vibe at the Taproom is always great, upbeat and fun music, typically of the indie rock variety, not too loud, but not just background noise either. The mood is always fun, usually a younger crowd, 20s - 40s, full of people having a good time. The walls are adorned by weird and interesting art and the giant bear head at the bar is amazing. The contrast of the brick walls on the interior and the drift wood on one wall is smartly done and the lighting is appropriate for the scene. The quality of the beers is always good, you can't go wrong with any of the staples, Daisy Cutter, Space, Pony and Akari Shogun are personal favorites, but beers like Over Ale and Gossamer are not to be overlooked, and the relatively new canned IPA, Heyoka, is fantastic. In addition to the usual suspects, there are often some tap room only exclusives that almost always hit the mark, and they almost always put their seasonal bottle/can releases on tap as well, which is a big plus. The service is their lone slip up, occasionally there is a server of sorts to help bus table and refill empty glasses though most of the ordering is done at the bar and it isn't always the easiest thing to flag down a bartender, despite the bar being so small. The selection is another small knock, they run about 8-10 lines at once and with many of those lines dedicated to their staple beers, there isn't always a ton of new or interesting things to try. That being said, over in the shop, there are often more beers that are available for growlers with small samples offered at the filling station.

Verdict: One of my favorite spots in town for sure, mostly because of the vibe and ambiance and its a sure bet to get some fresh Daisy Cutter. I wish a little more was offered in terms of variety of beers, but all in all, a great place to hang out. A side note, you can bring in your own food or have it delivered there, which doesn't pigeonhole you into a small menu, a plus in my book.

Good place to visit in Chicago. The people that work there are very friendly and like to talk beer. The are doing some very good stouts, IPAs, and Pale ales. The vibe in the tasting room is very good. I would definitely go again. I do not believe they had food.

this place is awesome, one of my favorite spots in chicago (a city that i am only beginning to become familiar with). smallish taproom, but very comfortable. amazing art adorns the walls, sparking more questions than resolutions, with a lot of wood on the walls, a cool bear sculpture behind the bar, a chalkboard menu, and plenty of beer on tap. a wonderful atmosphere to drink beer in cold weather. all of the beer here is outstanding, i just expected the place to be bigger given the proliferation of their product. the shrub tundra coffee brown is among the best beers ive ever had, but all were enjoyable. people could not have been nicer from the crew that works there to the other patrons, we were welcomed into a busy spot, treated well, served promptly, and made to feel very at home. the brewhouse is sick too, just a 15 barrel system feeds 19, yes 19 fermenters, which i think is pretty cool. i love the heavy workload for the system, and the brewers obviously have it dialed. blue collar meets hip, i really dig that mesh. fairly priced with a cool little shop attached. one of my favorite brewery visits in a long time, these guys are doing it up right!
