I have had the pleasure in my life to find a few drinking establishments that are transcendental in experience. Where good beer and comrarderie combine creating something that can only be described as love. In my home of Manhattan, New York City, that establishment is The Blind Tiger Ale House, where I have been a regular for 10 years. I thought of The Tiger often in the 10 days I spent in Amsterdam in April, 2009. Not because I missed it, but because I discovered my Dutch equivalent in Cafe Westerdok. One of the most hospitable establishments I have ever raised a glass in. The owner, Steven, is genuine, knowledgable and above all, passionate about beer. The selection is above average and the decor classic Dutch. What separates Cafe Westerdok from the other excellent beer establishments in Amsterdam is the camaraderie between the owner and patrons. Whether a regular or newcomer, you are met with genuine, intelligent and sincere conversation.
Any further description would be futile, however I will close with the following:
I keep a list of the places where I want my ashes spread when I die. One of those places is Cafe Westerdok.
