A light copper body low bitterness with good hop flavor. This is my impression of what the English troops may have been drinking when they occupied India. The pale ale they drank had mellowed considerably. The wooden casks had spent many months traveling on ships and long inland journeys to the troops, where they were then tapped and enjoyed.

Aroma is aromaless. Ok not quite, but close enough for government work....very vaugely hoppy. Dusty brown with a massive and fluffly white head that is very bubbly. Fore is lightly hoppy...lightly malty...lightly citric and heavily boring. Put some freaking ingredients in your beer please! At least it doesn’t taste bad...it just doesn’t taste. BMC, IPA is what this is.

A: It is a light amber color. clear with a pure white head that quickly dissipated

S: Standard Hop smell, with a little bit of barley bread thrown in

M: light carbonation, smooth or finished feel. It left the normal dry taste in the mouth.

T: The hoppiness comes through the beer and covers up just about everything else. It is a standard IPA with a strong hop after taste that follows the dryness in the mouth

O: It is not a stand out IPA, Normally would have expected more from Rock Art. Very disappointed

Light yellow-orange body with a modest finger of thin white head. Not much lacing to speak of. Pretty good to look at.

Smell is metallic and slightly skunked. Too bad...

Flavor is thin, bitter and acidic. This misses all of the good things about an IPA, in favor of the negative. No citrus or floral hop presence. No sweet malt. This has a distinct flavor of bitter aspirin. Not impressed, indeed.

Mouthfeel is very astringent and somewhat chalky. Thin and acidic.

Drinkability is moderate. On tap, in a pub, I would probably get used to the flavor weirdness and put down a few pints. Here, at home, I am glad that I have other, better, options.

This beer finished 10th out of 12 beers in our IPA blind taste test of New England and Mid-Atlantic IPA's. I remember trying some Rock Art beers at the 2002 Vermont Brew Fest, and nothing from Rock Art Brewery left an impression on us.

This beer poured very light yellow, almost white. I thought I was pouring a Bud Light. Not much head and lacing. The bold hops taste of an IPA was almost non-existent, which sounded off an alarm with my tastebuds. It had some fruitiness taste and some underlying malt, but I could not get past the blandness.

Everyone felt the same about this beer. It was a dud.

After hearing a lot of good things about this beer thought i would give it a try. And let me just say i was very unimpressed. I have never had a bottle beer that tasted like it came out of a can. Which it did, everyone who was drinking it tasted a distinct metal taste to the beer. No hop character at all which is most unusal for an IPA. Might try some of their other beers but will difnetly stay away from this one in the future.

Pours very clear, orangy yellow brew with a puffy white head. lots of bubbles. Metallic dry hop odor, smells slightly sour and citrusy too. Watery hop flavor. Metal that was in odor is also present in sort of a coppery form in the taste. Some raw yeast flavor and more malts than i expected. thin and a bit unbalanced. Much more like a mildly hoppy pale ale...i really think they came closer to an English IPA than an Amrican, but either way its not all that impressive.

This beer has the appearance of a hefeweizen: Cloudy and golden. The head is white with some okay lace.

Mild aromas with lower than expected hop smell. Slight sour cream smell. Low malt. Not to style on the profile.

This is a very dry IPA. The taste is grainy. The hop bitterness common to the style seems to be missing; this is all malt, but one dimensional. There are notes of dry apricot.

Clearly, this one missed the expectations of an IPA.

12oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Dark amber body, cloudy with chunks of yeast (who knew a 12oz IPA would be bottle conditioned?), under a finger of soft, ultra-fine eggshell foam. Ok retention, sheets of delicate lace. She's got an ugly body, but damn if that wasn't some fine head. Let's say it evens out.

S: Pine resin, light citrus, and plenty of caramel. Pretty standard, but quite pleasant ... at first. As it warms, though, it takes on some unpleasant notes of wet dog, dirty grass, and harsh grapefruit. Not good.

T: Hmm. Bitter piney hops, cloying malt, and some rather unappetizing yeast chalkiness. Overly bitter, astringent finish. Not terrible, but definitely not a good IPA.

M: Medium body, with plenty of late-developing carbonation. Pretty solid.

O: Underwhelming. I'm very glad I got a single instead of a six-pack. Not recommended.

Appears a light gold with a small white cap and little lacing.
Smell is florally and soapy with light malt in the background.
Taste is light and soapy with nothing fantastic jumping out.
Mouthfeel is light, fizzy, and weak.
Drinkability...nothing special going on this this one.

Hazy golden appearance. Bubbly ivory white head. Retention and lacing are adequate. Aroma is very sprucy. A very light undelying of toasted malt aroma is perceived as well. The taste is big on the piney, sappy notes. A little citric and a little rind like as well. Not real big on the bitterness or lingering bitterness. Malt backbone is adequate at best. Mouthfeel is just a little on the flat side. Body about medium. Average at best IPA. I wouldn't buy this one again.

A: A very pale, clear, yellow/gold color with a faint, white “head” on the top. Looks like a pilsner or light lager to me..

S: Some slight pineapple comes to mind and maybe some slight citrus with some mildly sweet caramel malts.

T: Very bland. Has a weird LIGHT hoppiness to it with some bread notes and slight malts. I still get that pineapple, but very subtle and “off-like” with some apple. Maybe even a tad bit sour? Unlike any IPA I have had… In a boring sort of way. Bitterness is there, but very very slight. Ends some what dry with the taste lingering in the mouth.

M: Mouthfeel is alright. Medium to light carbonation with a medium body that goes down pretty clean and refreshing.

D: Drinkable? Very, only because of its nothingness. Very bland and stale and yet clean. Nothing very nasty or offensive, just very unlike the style and very unmemorable. I wouldn't pick this up again nor would I advise any body else to.

A - pours a cloudy golden color with a bubbly head that dissipates very quickly.

S - barely a hop aroma to speak of, which is very surprising. There is merely a slight citrusy smell.

T - This tastes very dry and watery, not what I would expect of an IPA.

M - fairly good carbonation and mouthfeel.

D - It would be more drinkable if it were closer to an IPA. Very disapointing really.

A - the palest IPA i have ever had, a plae yellow straw coor, with a thin very lacey white head, no carbonation available

S - has the hoppy smell traditional in IPA's, but not as intense as i would assume, there is an additional musty smell i cannot place atypical of IPA's not sure if its place is in this beer's nose, but its there

T - not bitter enough in my opinion, too much roastes malty flavors, it kinda mellows out the hops, not what im looking for in an IPA, nonetheless,

M&D - ...it is easy down and has a nice flavor, just not what i would expect from an IPA, yet has a decent taste, and overall satisfactory experience

Appearance: On top is a very thick and very rocky head two fingers in height. Underneath is a hazy copper colored beer.

Aroma: Grapefruit, light piney notes. Minor buttery bits in the nose. Twinges of apricot with a slight tart aroma.

Taste: Decent carbonation on the palate. Tropical fruit and grapefruit notes. Biscuity texture with a light dry finish.

Notes: Well it's decent but I would not recomend to someone looking for a good American ipa. Cheers.

This pours a yellow straw with a smallish head that's gone in a hurry. The smell is a typical IPA smell, a real strong citrus aroma. Grapefruit and tangerine are both present in this beer. The nice smell makes up for the poor apperance. The taste is very weak and watery. The hop flavor is very slight with almost no bitterness. This tastes almost like a light beer. The m/f is light with a real watery feel to this. This isn't a good American IPA, it's very subdued, I almost wonder though, if this is more true to way IPA's are supposed to be? This isn't what other US brewers are doing now and it seems weak.

A: Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass. This beer is thick, hazy, and pumpkin pie in color, with a woah-thick, 3-finger ecru head. Opaque in its unfiltered haziness, with some sediments and yeast at the bottom.

S: Musty hops over malted barley hit the nose on first whiff. Earthy, with grass and dirt notes, and an under-riding malt sweetness that reminds me faintly of toffee. Fair to middling nose.

T: Earthy and sedimentary on the tongue, with some hop character on the swallow, and a bitter, mossy finish. Taste is quite natural (in an "earthy" sense) and has a lot of rustic notes to it. Aged wood pallets, hay, dirt, rocks from the creek, sediment: all of these flavors mingle on the tongue in this beer, along with some malted sweetness and a bitter, chewy aftertaste.

M: Chewy and substantial enough in the mouth, with a grainy, woolen after-feel. The feel is a big part of the experience with this beer, as it can, at times, feel like you've taken a big bite of nature and chewed on it for a while. This could be positive or negative, depending on your tastes.

O: A fair offering, but not one that sticks out for the right reasons. The hops are mostly felt in the bitter, bone-dry aftertaste, and the unfiltered nature lends it to be too chewy for a session beer. I would look for other offerings first, but wouldn't be upset if this was the best on tap.

Really like a lot of this breweries beers.. this one though? To me it's a clunker. Taste upfront you think its gonna be great but all of the nice hoppiness and bitterness is completely subdued once you fully taste it. Tastes like an average pale ale at best.. not sure what they were trying for with this one. Almost like an IPA-light.. which is weird because I found a lot of their other beers to be well above average. Drinkable, but definitely a sub-par IPA... still a solid mixed pack though.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass

Bottle conditioned. Attempted to leave yeast in bottle but still got several floaties. Pours hazy amber with a huge fizzy head. Aroma is not great. Kind of effervescent, with a stale bready aroma.

First sip is malty, but finishes super dry. Hop flavor is not present like it should be in an IPA. Almost an asprin like bitter finish. Other than a faint malty sweetness, I'm not getting a lot of flavor from this beer.

I really don't enjoy this beer. It is a poor representation of an IPA, and really isn't a good Pale Ale, or any other beer style either.

Hazy golden color with a nice foamy head and some great lacing. Low aroma-some hops in there but not much of anything to speak of. Average flavor. Slight maltiness with a dash of hop flavor and bitterness. Am I expecting too much with all the hoppier beers out there? I dont think so-I liken this more to a British IPA. Decent body-pleasant creaminess to it. Rather average overall. I look forward to trying their Double IPA for comparison.

12 oz bottle, with May notched out on the bottle label.

appears hazy rusty orange color, with off-white head that fades. smells a bit of earthy hops, just okay. tastes slightly sweet, malty. hops build, finishes slightly bitter. medium body, higher carbonation. maybe it was better when fresh, but just "meh" right now.

Rocky white head that fades to a semi-intact sheet of large bubbles. Some patches of weak of lace. Glowing, light peach in color with a chill haze.

Light pine, hop resin, and bubblegum aromas. Semi-sweet toasted malt character. The hop profile has a lighter citrus quality that is inviting yet not bold like a 'hop monster'.

This IPA starts with an oily pine and grapefruit flavor, but this immediately falls apart to a bland wheat taste. The malt character adds a hint of sweetness to this airy wheat flavor. A slightly dark bitterness finishes the sip, but it definitely does not come from the hop presence; rather the odd mixture of corn, wheat, and grains.

Lighter than medium bodied; very airy. Too light and thin on the palate for an American IPA.

A bland IPA with an adjunct-flavored bitterness and aftertaste. This is surely one to pass on.

On tap @ Sunset 5/27/06. Served in a pint glass.

This is a merely ok IPA. There is nothing that really distinguishes it from others, nor are there glaring flaws. It is a pretty basic ale with a hop backbone, although in this case the hops are not overpowering. There is also a slight malt backbone, but the beer is pretty simple on the whole.

Pours a very nice orange amber color with a surprising amount of yeast sediment in the bottom of the bottle. The head is a slightly off white foam that has great staying power and leaves decent lace.

The aroma is nicely hoppy, and lemon and pine are the dominant hop aromas. There also seems to be a bit of spice in there as well. There are some nice underlying malty notes that have the classic biscuity pale ale quality.

The flavor follows up the nose, but is surprisingly unbalanced. I mostly am getting pine flavors from the hops, with just a touch of lemon and a bit of mintyness. The malt is there, but seems fairly buried by the hop load and is just holding up a fairly firm bitterness. There are also some grainy flavors that are not necessarily welcome in an IPA. I have to make this clear, this is not a super hopped IPA, it just seems like the malt bill is not quite sweet enough.

The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium and the finish is very dry. There is a bit of a medicinal grainy aftertaste on my tongue that is not all that pleasant.

This is a fairly drinkable IPA, and not bad by any means, but it seems to be fairly average. I am a big rock art fan and I love their bigger beers, but this one just left me wanting.

Ridge Runner pours a golden color with a large white head that disapates quickly. There is little to no lacing. The aroma is very much of copper, and apple juice. The taste isnt far different. At first you get a blast of apple juice then peach with a copper middle. The finish is bitter with next to no pine. This didnt seam much like an IPA, more like a mellow pale ale. This didnt coat my palate at all. It went down, got a bit of flavor, then left quickly. I wouldnt go out of my way to get another one.

Foamy white head, plentiful lacing.

Citrus smell, hazy look.

Lacks balance in the taste. Not enough backbone to support the hops, which provide some mouthfeel to an otherwise bland flavor. Has a taste of an unfinished brew.

Even as a session IPA, I'm left wanting something more - spice, malt, something.
