Tasted on draft at St. Elias on 3/26/2010.
Brewed for the 2010 Great Alaskan Beer & Barleywine Festival in January, this beer has been on-tap at the brewpub since then.
OG 1085, 93 IBUs
Aged for several months in a Heaven Hill Bourbon cask.
It pours a dark brown, with very little head. The aroma is of alcohol and dark fruit, with some light hop notes. On the palate it's heavy, malt forward but with plenty of hop bitterness to balance. Alcohol is noticeable, some slight bourbon flavors present. Then the wood begins to make its presence known, with vanilla and even coconut flavors kicking in. Finish is long and warming, enticing you to take another ship.
A fine American barleywine, with a more restrained use of wood than some of St. Elias' previous efforts.
