Would have picked this as an IS going off the pour alone; dark brown with a choc-orange head. Chcolate and roast on the nose althought with a tingly mineral note. More chocolate to taste however the palate structure is more astrigent than expected. Some dark cooking chocolate lurks as well. Not sweet, but not dry either. I’m not as enthusiastic as some of the other raters below.

A - dark as night with a tall creamy dark tan head.

S - Heavy dark chocolates and malts. Slight prune and just a touch of bitter in the end.

T - dark chocolate and coffee. Has a stronger alcohol flavor than I would have expected in a 5.9% brew.

M - medium coating and no real tingle.

D - one bottle, maybe two, since you think it is stronger than it is.

Pours jet black with a wonderful chocolate mousse-like head showing great persistence.
Aroma shows liquorice, dark chocolate, espresso, milk chocolate, roasted grains and light hops. Quite delightful.
Flavours are dominated by roasted grains showing some coffee and nutty notes. Unfortunately there is not as much depth or variety as in the aroma. Finishes with an easy-going roasty bitterness.
Good rich body, but could do with a bit more creamy carbonation.

Pours a very, very dark colour with slight red tinge around the edge. Head is minimal, sinks to an ochre ring, while lacing is deliciously sticky and consistent around the glass. Good-looking stout, for damn sure.

Nose is sour and smokey, nice roasted malt but has very little ashiness. Smells quite meaty, with a slight caramel edge as well, bit of bacon, wood smoke, light medicinal phenols, nice stouty nose. Impressive but subtle, and pleasant.

Taste is quite black, with some over-roasted characters there but none of that burnt, charcoaly bitterness. Has nice flavours in fact, but ultimately is a bit lacking in taste. Quite caramelly, with some hints of burnt toast and a slight mint character around the edge and some sour cherry flavour as well. Nice flavours, just not enough of them, ultimately seems like it's holding something back.

Mouthfeel is fairly syrupy, not much fizz, but a little bit of texture from a boozy thickness. Not bad, but not special.

Quite a drinkable stout, the right sour and bitter flavours, subdued enough to quaff, really.

The Ace of Spades Stout was my last beer left over from a trade with MrKennedy. This stout poured out at a rich dark black color with a fizzy brown colored head. The lacing wasn't too strong here. The smell of the beer was heavily roasted with some chocolate on the nose. The taste was very nicely balanced, I found that the aftertaste of dark chocolate was probably the best part of this brew. The mouthfeel was medium bodied and had a nice amount of carbonation. Overall it was a well done stout, no real issues to it that I found. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Had on-tap at the BrewBoys pub; great place and the brewmaster was a great guy. Took us through the tasting, showed genuine interest in our queries and was just a good dude. Looked sort of like Alton Brown, too, but was obsessed with beer instead of food. Saved the darkest beer, "Ace of Spades" for last. In fact, he told us that their intention was to make the darkest ale possible with this brew, and even mentioned the brewing techniques/ingredients they used to accomplish it. The result was a fantastic Foreign Stout, here were the tasting notes:

A- Pours black, no hint of light, rich cascading tan head. Never fully dissipates, leaves fair amount of lacing as well.

S- Sweet nose of roasted coffee, some smoke, and a hint of cherrywood

T- Bittersweet chocolate, dark sweetness of rich roasted malts up front with a dark and smokey finish. Slight hop bitterness keep it balanced.

M- Not too thick, creamy mouthfeel, dry finish

D- Very rich, but still drinkable. Limit a few to one sitting, though the regulars throw these back no problem.

Great, great beer and a truly great craft brewery in South Australia. If you find yourself in Adelaide this place is a must!

A - Midnight black with a small reddish foam head, spotty lace.

S - Dark, dark chocolate, bitter coffee and liquorice.

T - Quite dry. A real roasted bitterness, yet some sweetness also. Burnt chocolate.

M - Light and not as creamy as I like in a stout.

O - A satisfying after dinner treat. Without the depth of the very best stouts but a fine Aussie beer.

Drank from my Duvel Tulip.

A - Pours a dark Ebony colour with a tanned head that retains well

S - Lots of dark chocolate and malts with a little roast.

T - Lots of cocoa and some espresso coffee. Lots of flavour here for a relatively weak brew.

M - Medium to full body with minimal carbonation.

D - This is one of the best Australian produced stouts that I have tried.

Pours a very deep black, brownish at the edges, with a filmy, but consistent head of mocha brown foam. Some nice lacing. Body isn't quite as thick or languid as it might be, but otherwise a damn good looking brew.

Lots of deep dark, but pungent characters on the nose. Toasted coconut is noticeable, hints of oak, smoke and charred grain. It's not overwhelmingly black, but there's an awful lot to it. Very nice indeed.

Very deep, rich and succulent on the palate. There's a really nice sheen and smoothness to it, that glosses over a lot of the charred ashy characters which form the bulk of the body. It's a subtle sweetness, that takes the edge off the darkness. It's not as insane as some of the best, or most intense stouts I've had, but it's pretty good.

A very nice, and very smooth stout. Plenty of character, and quite drinkable. Not as insane, or as complex as the very best examples, but it is flying high.

To me this brewery is very hit and miss sometimes producing a great example of the style and sometimes falling way short but im proud to say this is definately one of their best beers and still as i remember it,it pours a jet black as night colour with a frothy one finger mocha laced head with subtle lacing, the first aroma i get is blackberries followed by a bitter hoppy cappicno malty aroma,it has a nice medium bodied mouthfeel to it not too thick or not too thin with a nice strong taste of malty mocha which finishes with a nice touch of bitterness to perfectly balance out the sweetness of this beer to make it not feel as filling as it looks, definately one to try.

A - Poured into a pint glass from a 630ml bottle a solid black with a few centimetres of coffee coloured dense head that hangs around for a while.
S - Roasted malt, slightly bitter chocolate & coffee aromas dominate the smell along with some earthy notes. As it warms some herbal notes are also coming out.
T - Quite a roasty & chocolate dominated taste with some sweet vanilla hints & again some earthiness. A bit of dark fruit as well.
M - Medium to full bodied stout with a lowish carbonation.
D - I love a good stout and this is something I'll be buying again. Hope they do it in 330ml bottles as a 630ml bottle in one sitting is a bit hefty.

330 ML poured into a tulip
Have had this too many times and have not reviewed this. HMMM

A-- Poured dark, near black cola color and settled black. No light penetrating this at all. Short lived dark leather color head. Quickly dies off and leaves no lacing at all. Same when swirled. Best height on head is one and half fingers.

S-- Coffee, chocolate and and earthy pungent smell that has a bit of fresh cut grass in this. Some stewed strawberries or possibly rhubarb with the smell.

T-- Coffee acidity sourness and chocolate, bakers chocolate that is. Big bite of the coffee acidity to start with this. Also quite earthy in the taste.

M-- Acidity slows down in the mouth and smooths out to just coffee and chocolate. Very smooth and finishes with a good amount of sweet coffee acidity to finish. Medium body and higher medium feel.

O-- True to style and does quite well at it. Feels a lot bigger than the ABV leads on. Quality beer that for the ABV will age well and get more complex with age. On par with some of the better Foreign Exports that are out there. One of the better beers made in Australia that flys under the radar.

A 330ml bottle poured to a pint glass ['Oregon Craft Beer Month']; this was flown across the Pacific then toted up the West Coast by dgilks on his beery US adventure last month. Thanks, David!

Love the label (so does my graphic designer wife), looking every bit the pasted-on playing card, Ace of Spades.
5.9% ABV = 1.5 Standard Drinks. No date.

A: Ominously dark, an impenetrable blackness even at the fringes. Creamy mocha-tan head that builds rapidly to more than a finger, but falls just as fast. Probably the only knock, looks-wise, is a lack of head retention. Lace is in wide bands, ones that slyly break apart and descend the glass, back the concave cap.

S: What started well enough as a wafting bittersweet chocolate and understated coffee, fading to more sweetness and underlying fruity (dark berry) esters and confectionery spices. Something in here reminds me of a European Baltic Porter.

T: Earthy and dark, a jammy berry coated in thick chocolate doses and milder coffee roast. Dry and somewhat 'dirty' before subtler sweetness (almost a caramelized or 'seared meat' type of sugariness) begins to gain some ground. A bit of brassy tang in the finish, the slightest oxidized souring that doesn't detract whatsoever. Pretty damn complex and awfully delicious.

M: Creamy and richly coating feel, with a singing spicy tingle that lingers a long while on the tongue. Not a particularly 'heavy' beer, but an eternal finish, almost espresso-like. A surprise is the subtle alcohol warmth ~ that this is 'only' 6% is a little surprising as it smolders in the mouth.

O: Quite good! Export Stouts aren't something I get to try every day, and this was a real treat to have one from an Australian brewer I've heard good things about. Robust flavor would keep me coming back to this one... if it was available here in Oregon! Thanks again, David ~ cheers, mate!

Pours a black body, with a thin head. Dies quickly to a film. No lacing

Aromas of roast malt, dark chocolate.

Taste is a full bodied assault, initial palate sweetness, followed by chocolate flavours, and then some hop bitterness balances the plate palte and finishes quite dry.

Mouthfeel is well carbed and full.

Overall, a well done stout. Tases better than it looks, a nice change.

Held on to this or a while. Looking forward to it.

Pours an impressive deep black with a dark tan head. Should have let it warm a bit as the head remains thin and fades quickly. Aside from that, an impressive beer fills the glass. Also a swirl as it warms tends to coax a nice tan cover.

Wow. This is where the beer shines. Amazingly deep aroma. Cocoa powder, slight sweet alcohol, lightly charred dark malt. Wonderful. Maybe not as complex as the best stouts, but definitely right up there. And for only 5.9% abv certainly punches above its weight.

Taste has more of the expected FES roasty character and dryness. Nice smooth malt character with some residual sweetness. Hard for me to pick but seems to be some nice hop flavor as well. Very enjoyable.

Very happy with this. Could be much higher in abv but I think 5.9 suits it. Means you can enjoy a few more before hitting the wall.

Nice, deep black colour with a large dark tan head. Poor head retention but it looks appropriate.

Rounded chocolate aroma with an earthy edge. Distinct but mild hop character. Slightly hop.

A robust coffee and chocolate flavour along with lots of roast characterise this stout which epitomises the style. Slightly earthy with a mineral edge. Very good.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

A solid stout with lots of flavour. Thoroughly enjoyable and one of Australia's better beers.

Appearance - 4.5
The viscous jet black liquid is topped by two fingers of head with the appearance of chocolate mousse, which slowly reduced to a thin layer.

Smell - 4.5
The snifter glass is perfect for concentrating aromas; surprisingly it is the minty hops that I notice first, followed by chocolate topping, cocoa and espresso.

Taste - 4.0
A rich and nicely balanced strong stout. Burnt malt and dark chocolate dominate with coffee and just a little minty hops in the finish. Burnt bitterness lingers pleasantly

Mouthfeel - 4.0
Full-bodied and a little oily with fine, smooth carbonation.

Drinkability - 4.0
Not a session beer, but it isn't supposed to me. I will be buying it again.

OVERALL - 4.2
A truly lovely stout that surely must be one of the best beers being brewed in Australia

This pours black with a great looking brown head. Good retention.

A big whack of coffee on the nose and some milk chocolate behind it. A bit of dark fruit in there as well. Nice.

Roasty goodness dominates the palate with some chocolate as well. The coffee is as evident. A bit of mint.

Very smooth but it is a little spritzy in the mouth.

This is a great stout. Will certainly get it again.

Top shelf stout. Not much wrong with this beer but it doesn't have the X-factor that would make it brilliant. Highlight would be the finish; long, dry, grippy and assertive. Chocolatey nose, firm bitterness and a solid mouthfeel with plenty of roasted bacon, smokey flavours makes for a fine beer worth coming back for.

Now this is great beer. From the packaging (classic playing card) to the liquid (pure darkness) - it's an all-around, well-crafted product.

Smells just like chocolate cake; moist, deep baking-coco aroma, frosting and all!

Taste is a bit more earthly; hints of smoke and the charred bits of BBQ, coffee, chocolate. A deceptively high carbonation makes this highly drinkable. Certainly a sensational session-stout (say that 5 times fast).
