375ml bottle into a snifter

cloudy orange color with a big, quickly dissipating head. smell is awesome and lets me know that this beer is what i have come to love in my new favorite style of beer - sour IPA. funky, hoppy, sour. chardonnay barrels are apparent. taste is quite lip puckering at first which quickly gives way to a medium bodied mouthfeel...slightly fruity, finishes bone dry. reminiscent of a de garde, this new style of beer is just incredible. i still would have to give the edge to the original red swingline, but this one is terrific too!

one of the last beers in this series i had yet to try. its really fantastic too, maybe my favorite of the lot. this is the just lacto version. great orangey red color to it, radiant in the tulip, with a touch of haze and a tall airy lasting lacy white head. i smell a ton of fruit from all the hop, peaches and mangoes and pineapple, tart for sure, but not super acidic in the nose, just very hoppy. the taste is much more sour than the nose, and in this particular case, i dont think its missing its brett counterpart. i like the cleanness of it, the lack of funk lets the fruit really come out, orange rind type acidic bitterness with the tropical hops is a cool combination. less acidic than a lot of other lacto beers, maybe this is younger, or fermented a little cooler, not sure, but its awesome. the hop profile is unique with the orange peel thing, and the carbonation is through the roof, giving an already low abv beer a really light complexion on the whole. maybe my favorite beer in this crazy and clever series. super well done.

From a 375mL bottle into a snifter.

Lots of head on the pour. Airy but frothy. Lace sticks about the glass. Cloudy golden body bursting with carbonation. 4.25

Smells juicy like anfresh cut grapefruit. Smell reaches me from a distance like a lady's perfume... Seductive. Vinous notes and a pungent orange aroma. Slight suggestions of sweetness. 4.25

Tastes like tart cherries in a lot of ways. But with an underlying current of grapefruit and lacto yeast. Definitely has some interesting dimensions, crossing an IPA and a gose with a touch of vinous quality. 4.25

This brew has the juicy quality of the other Swingline brews and that characteristic feel of pungent citrus fruit, but it's much more tart and vinous. It's light and refreshing like lemonade. 4.25

Tasty as hell but still light and refreshing.

12.7 fl oz brown glass bottle. 4.1% ABV. Red wax-ed over pry-off pressure cap. Served cold into a tulip. Reviewed live in high altitude Castle Rock, CO as a sour IPA per the label (whatever that is...). Expectations are average given the brewery and purported style.

No bubble show forms as it's poured. 100 IBUs.

HEAD: 2 fingers wide. White colour. Audibly fizzy. Recedes within about 4 minutes, leaving no lacing. Effervescent.

BODY: Hazy and unfiltered. Glowing orange colour of great vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears overcarbonated. Not a great looking sour or IPA, but interesting as a hybrid of the two.

AROMA: Floral, vaguely citrusy (tangerine), a bit of apple cidre vinegar, and some mild clean lactobacillus. A pleasant albeit relatively unevocative aroma of average intensity. Clean barley, pale malts.

Doesn't seem horribly sour, and the hops aren't interesting.

No alcohol or off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Lactobacillus is present from the beginning, but doesn't crescendo until the third act. It's a clean clinical sourness, failing to evoke true spontaneous fermentation or wild bacterial notes gone rampant. Maybe a 3-4/10 in terms of sour intensity. Hop profile is uninteresting, featuring dominant tangerine with subsidary notes of orange pulp, flowers, and zest. I don't buy it as a hybrid of an IPA and sour, but the sour element is nice.

Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. Nice flavour amplitude. Surprisingly well balanced, but I'd just as soon they'd dispense with the IPA ruse altogether. Lacks the wild characteristics that bring fans to the style, but is nevertheless enjoyable. It is quite wanting in terms of subtlety and nuance, but this flavour profile stands out; it's not generic.

I don't find any overt oak, and the chardonnay character is faint at best.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, lightly smacky on the palate, acidic, off-puttingly pulpy, medium-bodied, and overcarbonated.

This texture complements the taste nicely, but doesn't feel custom-tailored specifically to it and doesn't elevate the beer.

OVERALL: A surprisingly enjoyable sour from Trinity which unfortunately has a mediocre IPA build mashed into it. The result is an enjoyable but problematic brew with likable characteristics. If they could stick to fundamentals, maybe they could really brew a good sour. Its pulpy texture really holds it back. But it's certainly drinkable.
