Incredibly hazy, straw hue with a lot of foam, no lacing. Brett yeast in the nose. Spice (coriander maybe?) upfront in the flavor, slightly tart finish. Similar spice profile to how my mom cooks corned beef. What that is I couldn't tell you. Very bubbly, very dry mouthfeel. Decent.

how do you even think of this, all the grains in the world with saison yeast, some brett strains, lavender and pumpkins in oak? while it seems like a jumble and in some ways unnecessary complication of beer making, this beer works, its one of a kind, and its absolutely fantastic. hazy pale muted light brass color with a lasting two inches of white head. it smells like brett first, tart and mouthwatering, even pushing sour. i also get plenty of the lavender, which is robust but not perfume-like at all. the oak comes out up front in the flavor, as does the lavender and brett. i get an herbal profile either from the spices or the saison yeast, but thats rather apparent as well. some real funk as it finishes, almost off flavored weirdness, but again, it makes sense here. oats and spelt give this some heft for its low abv, as well as some real girth in the body that not even the explosive carbonation can tame. I'm not sure what the pumpkins add, i never taste or smell them, and i don't know how to feel them, but their impact appears minimal in an already busy brew. my only real complaint is that such a large amount of beer gushed out when i popped the cap, this is very alive, to be careful of your investment when you pour it, and trust me, at 17 bucks a go, it is an investment. good beer through, well made and funky, complicated in a good way, nice use of odd ingredients, bretty and dry too, hard to do. admirable.

Review #900

Saison Sunday!

Big thanks goes out to Oxymoron for sending me this fall themed saison, thanks Aaron! Popping the cap reveals gunsmoke galore. This one is a slow gusher, very slow. Oh Face is harvest orange with moderate haze. Polished gold is more appropriate when backlit and carbonation seems to rise from every surface of the glass. The head is micro bubbled, highly active, and everlasting.

First up in the smell is freshly roasted pumpkin followed closely by ginger and soft nutmeg. The spicing is even handed and instead of overpowering actually adds enjoyable depth. Saison qualities come along next and are the foundation. Musty but ripe stone fruit play a big roll while wildflower, damp hay, and faint barnyard qualities from the addition of brett show some character. Very unique.

The flavor is good but isn't as expressive as the nose led me to believe. The roast pumpkin is much softer and while the ginger and nutmeg are still there they are also barely noticeable and tend to linger on the finish more than add to the actual profile. Bright peach and green apple play their part in the backbone with tangy wheat. The brett is also softer with faint barnyard and wildflowers. Again, good but a little muddled.

The body is moderate but leaning toward the lighter side of the spectrum. Trinity did a nice job on the level of carbonation producing an airy, light, frothy feel. The finish is crisp and dry with a chalky bitterness I'm assuming is from the spices.

I'm pleasantly surprised by Oh Face. I'm not a big spiced pumpkin beer fan but this is a different beast all together. The underlaying saison is well built and expressive while the spicing is soft and complimentary. The pumpkin adds nice earthiness while the brett adds depth and character. A well made beer all around. Thanks for the sample, Aaron!
