Beer #9 8/9/13

This porter is an appropriate dark brown color with a thick, pillowy, craggy tan head coming to rest at about one finger tall and dropping sticky, clingy lace behind.
The nose is roasty on a good foundation of malts. I don't get a whole lot of raspberry, but it's in there, a bit of soft juiciness hiding underneath. A touch of coffee grounds and a bit of bittersweet cocoa also linger.
The flavor is a bit earthier, but with all the aforementioned elements still present.
The body is medium, good for a porter, and solid with enough depth to support the flavor. The focus is rightly on smoothness, which is achieved.

On tap at Blues and Brews 2010. Served in my commemorative mini-pint glass with a smile from the kind folks at Cellar Rats.

Dark black with brown edges. Tan head. Doesn't cling but tries hard, A for effort and T for nice try.

Smell is nice, really nice. Fresh raspberry smell that is rarely achieved, chcoolate and roasted malt. Much more up my alley than the Thirsty Dog Raspberry Leghumper I'm doing a side-by-side with.

Taste is just shy of world class. Really fresh raspberries dance on top of roasty undertones of chocolate and coffee.

Just a bit of a disappointment from the m/f as it ends with just enough watery impression to be distracting, but it's refreshing so that's the trade-off. I enjoyed the hell out of this, really well done. The rats came through with a winner here.

From notes at the brewery 8 21 09: Our signature creamy espresso laced Black Plague Porter with natural raspberry flavoring. A great combo of cascade hops, black malts and berry fruit. 6% alc.

Poured on tap at The Hooley House in Mentor, Ohio for $3.75 into a clean, clear pint glass. The Hooley House is the only place other than Cellar Rats Brewery that I know of that offers Cellar Rats beer. I found the flyer at the brewery in Madison, Ohio a few weeks ago.

A Dark porter body with a medium brown one cm head. Nice curtain of medium dark brown lacing left on the glass after every sip. For the style, this cannot be improved.

S Nice sweet porter with a hint of raspberry, just as I expected.

T Nice smooth sweet porter. Shows a real skill and understanding of what a porter should taste like, with the addition of raspberry flavor. The light, sweet raspberry taste works really nicely with the porter base of dark roasted malt.

M Nice and smooth, exactly what I like about a good porter. Slight bite with dark roasted malt.

D Really good. I stepped out of my normal habit and ordered a second one. I normally drink only one of each beer.

Notes: Glad that I followed through in finding this beer here at Hooley House. I will be back for the food and to see if they have any other Cellar Rats beers but every other beer (at least on tap) was BMC :-( This is a mature, well crafted beer from Cellar Rats whose craft beer stock is rising with every beer that I try.
