12oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Murky dark brown with a thin head that disappears in a flash
S: This definitely lives up to its name- smoky with a nice smoked meat/charcuterie note up front and a bit of malt underneath. Unique and I like it a lot
T: Matches the nose. Smoke from a meat smokehouse along with a bit of the meat that got smoked as well. Again those notes up front and a pleasant maltiness underneath
M: Medium-bodied, smooth and smoky
O: This reminds me much more of a rauchbier than a Scottish ale. Very unique and I like it quite a bit though I could see where not everyone necessarily would

At first I was very skeptical about this beer because it was a smokey ale. I thought it would be awful with the smoked flavor. I got a 12 pack variety of Cellar rats beer and this was in there. This ale has a nice smokey flavor and is pleasant to drink. Not the kind of beer you drink fast. You drink it slow to enjoy the flavor. I was only able to find this 2 times, both in variety packs, so that was a let down. The other Cellar Rats beers were very good as well. Bottom line its a great beer. Get over the weird factor and try it.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle that I bought as a single from the brewery (attached to Debonne Windery in Madison, Ohio) last week for about $2.49 into a clean, clear Voodoo Brewery pint glass.

A Dark Brown body that glows a dark caramel in front of direct light under a nice, creamy, thick head. Good look. 4.0

S The nice malt presence of the Scottish Ale is there in conjunction with the smoke presence in equal amounts. Intriguing. I do not recall having these two aspects of beer in the same glass at the same time. The smokiness in this beer is something of a pork or bacon smoke. 4.0

T The medium roast malt and the smokiness suggested in the smell are there but there is also a somewhat harsh barley or hops bitterness that lingers on the back of my tongue. Annoyingly, it lingers much longer than the otherwise pleasant Scottish Ale and “smoke” nature of the taste. I found this to be the case in other Cellar Rats beers and it is not to my liking. My best guess is that it is a harsh hops bitterness but it may very well be some edgy barley or grains. If it is the hops then they are too rough for my taste buds. For me the taste is hijacked by that bitterness, whatever the source. 2.0

M As mentioned, too harsh for me and I really don’t care for how the harshness lingers well into the aftertaste. 2.0

D/O Drinkability is not that good due to the harshness. Overall this beer started out with some promise but that damn bitterness (in the taste, not so much the nose) really eclipsed what may have been a good tasting beer. 2.5

Notes: I will continue to support Cellar Rats Brewery (the closest bottling brewery to my home) but their beers can be polarizing. You will not likely find a bigger fan of their Field Rat Wheat or their Ratzberry Plague Porter but many of their high hop profile beers are very rough and bitter as I found with the McRatty’s Smoked Scottish Ale.
