not one of the darkest ESBs i've ever seen...but poured into a seidel reveals a very active, meringue-like head that sticks then slowly dissipates leaving ghostly patches. trying not to let the average+ ratings skew things. nose is above average, but barely...a definite C+...smells a bit like some rice brew made by the macros but with a little more class. first taste brings things back up a notch...barely sweet, more of a typical ESB hop finish if anything. smelled 'thin' but doesn't taste it...very dry to say the least. would prefer a little lingering flavor since it is enjoyable. a second taste and my tastebuds adjusted to take note of the slight maltiness that is still rolled over by the quick sour sting of the hops. all in all, pleasant and basically a rather light ESB with some ABV heft.
a shame the nose doesn't help the case at hand. a lawn/house/chore ESB for all seasons. meaning, nice, good, acceptable, more highs than lows, but...it could be a little more complex. and (the hallmark of a great ESB) "balanced"
