Notes/Commercial Description:
Regardless of whether you spend your winter months on the slopes, shoveling your driveway or just hiding out, Redhook Winterhook is a great way to chase off the winter chill. This year will be our 27th consecutive release of Winterhook. The recipe changes slightly every winter because nobody likes getting the exact same Holiday present year after year. Redhook’s 27th brew of Winterhook has roasted chocolate notes that smooth out the quick, spicy hop finish. The rich body and nutty, malty backbone make this winter ale slighty naughty and very nice.

Bottled 20SEP11 (because winter starts in September now?)

A: Copper with a finger of off-white foam which falls quickly to a sheet of the same. near cobweb lace. Excellent clarity.
S: Caramel malts with hints of metal.
T: Herbal, with a near lavender flavor. Nasty.
M: Thin with moderate carb.
O: Been drinking some shit beer tonight, getting tired of it.

Bottled, lame is a word that springs to mind. Very dissapointing for a supposed winter ale. Light choc, caramel, little hops noticable, grainy and thin, no bitterness, cola like texture. NOt really a fan of redhook at all, very bland for a winter beer, where is all the flavour????

Purchased as part of "build-your-own-six-pack" at local grocer. Medium head on a light amber body. Considerably more bitter than I prefer, I couldn't get anything else out of it. There was a dusty aftertaste that didn't help at all. It was smooth, however, not too fizzy. Just not anything I'd go after.

---WARNING: I am not a hophead.---

Looks good but smells wretched. The taste and smell are too hoppy and in the wrong way. Other beers taste and smell even hoppier but are much more tolerable. Something went wrong with this one. The taste was not as bad as the smell and seemed kind of average at first. As I kept drinking, however, the taste became worse. This beer needs more balance or different hops. I'm sure many people love it, but I certainly do not. I mustered up some courage and finished the glass, never to return again.

Weak thin, undermalted and overhopped come to mind with this beer. Besides that it's pretty good.

Seriously, this is the worst winter ale I've had this year for all the reasons I've stated above. I usually give a more detailed review but this beer is just not worthy.

"Winter Hook #29." 12 fl oz snub-top brown glass bottle with branded pry-off pressure cap and uninteresting label art acquired at a local H-E-B grocery some months ago and served into an Avery stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are below average given the brewery. 6% ABV per the label. 2013 vintage. Bottled: Sep 27 13.

Served at fridge temp and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a one finger wide head of pale khaki colour. Decent thickness. Okay creaminess. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is above average - about 3 minutes.

Body colour is a dark murky amber with brownish hues. It's a bit stale looking. No yeast particles or hop sediment is visible.

Overall, it's a generic looking winter ale with nothing to interest the discerning drinker.

Sm: Evident spices: nutmeg, allspice, and...ginger? Has some generic amber malts, caramalt, and a candi sugar sweetness. Caramel, faint molasses, licorice, fennel. Light vinous touches. Generic floral hopping.

No alcohol or yeast character is detectable.\

There just isn't much here of interest. It comes off very tired and generic, with no signs of boldness or inspiration. An inoffensive aroma of average strength. I can't say I'm real excited to try it.

T/Mf: Generic unevocative spices, generic amber malts, generic floral hops, and caramel. A hint of cherry cough syrup. Slight breadiness. That's about it.

It's cloyingly sweet and feels way too syrupy, thick, and sticky. Poor balance, no cohesion, no complexity, no subtlety, no intricacy, no nuance. Not a gestalt beer. Flavour duration, intensity, and depth are all subpar.

This is an unpleasant beer with few redeeming characteristics. Luckily, it's not boozy or hot.

No yeast character comes through.

Smooth and wet. Overcarbonated, but not biting. Okay thickness. Medium body. Poor overall presence on the palate.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh.

Dr: Difficult to quaff on account of its low quality and cough syrup notes. I'll have trouble finishing just one bottle. It's a terrible beer and isn't worth trying. I'd caution friends from purchasing it. More garbage from Redhook. But hey, there's always next year's recipe change to look forward to...

Sampled from a 12 oz bottle...poured into a chalice at 50 degrees. This is my first pretty bad beer in awhile..

A - Hmm...poured like a flat soda - fizzed a little, no head, clear brown in color. Sounded like there would be some carbonation, but nothing appeared.

S - A few faint scents of malt, but that's about it...something just doesn't seem right.

T - OK, now I'm just plain confused. No discernable flavors, but there's a burnt malt aftertaste, and after a tasteless brew, the aftertaste isn't welcoming at all.

M - No carbonation and a very watered down body.

D - I don't really know what else to say. I had the ESB and IPA and while not spectacular, they weren't downright bad like the Winter Warmer. At first I thought it was a bad bottle, but even after letting it sit for awhile, my opinion changed not. It's one of those that was so bad, I want to try it again just to be sure.

The beer poured copper with an off white head. The aroma was sweet malt hops and a bit of spice. The taste was a lightly spiced malt with a hint of hops in the finish. The feel was basically dry. This was a pretty average beer, and not at all up to the basic expectations of a winter warmer.

I'm not really sure where this beer is coming from calling itself a winter warmer.
Pours a medium copper with a moderate white head that melts to slightly sticky lacing.
Aroma is slightly stale toasted malt.
Taste is toasted malt with a grapefruit hop back, but little else.
Aftertaste is clean but, like, who cares...there was little to start with.

Pours a transparent reddish auburn brown, very minimal head.

Aroma is malty, spicey, a hint of citrus hops.

Flat tasting with a mild bitter hop taste, metallic aftertaste.

Light bodied with average drinkability. Not bad, but probably nothing I would buy again.

This beer pours a clear pale amber color. The head is small, and recedes very quickly into almost no lacing. The aroma is of caramel malt, but is very faint. The taste is like the aroma. The mouthfeel is medium-light bodied with annoyingly high carbonation. Overall, this is an extremely pour example of a winter warmer, and a bad beer all around. It isn't bad enough that I can't finish one bottle, but I won't drink this again.

Dark, dark amber; clear. Very nice lace, although the head died quickly.

The aroma features an overheated electrical engine smell--not appealing. Plasticky. Sorry, this one is a miss.

Good mouthfeel, high carbonation, rich. Flavorwise, I really can't get over the smell that seems to be present in the taste. This is a malty beer, even though it is masked. I can give this one some points for decent balance.

Overall, I would describe this as a miss. Certainly, this is a beer I won't be seeking out again.

Reviewed 1/29/2009 (bottled 12/02/08):

Pours a very clear brown colored body, with a small head, off-white in color. Has a hoppy malty sweet aroma. A dusty, light sweet taste. Very light tasting. Not much flavor. Has some hoppiness and bitterness, but not much flavor.

This Beer did not impress me (much like other of the Redhook beers I've tried). I thought that the beer was going to change my mind about Redhook, but instead it isn't showing much in the way of flavor. It is winter in a place notoriously bombarded with snow so I was feeling chipper to drink a WinterAle. I was persuaded by a beer salesman to give it a shot. It poured a dark copper color with a two finger head. The smell was a caramel and toasted malts with whiffs of chocolatiness as well. First, taste. Hmmm... Where'd it all go? I didn't taste much more than what I could just smell. The mouthfeel is nothing short of lame. No chewiness to it at all. The drinkibility may be there where you can keep drinking it without savoring it, but that also means I do not care for savoring, much less drinking too much more of this beer. There are better winter ales that are cheaper than this too! Oh well.

Clear deep red-copper with a cream colored head that quickly fades to a thin film of foam. Aroma exhibits a touch of caramel and little else. Just a bit on the boring side of good beer. Taste has a decent amount of roastiness and a touch of coffee, both pretty unexpected. Funky lingering spicy bitterness on the finish pervades the aftertaste. Strong earthiness comes out after a few sips. Mouthfeel is a bit thin as well. Drinkability is OK, but one is more than enough for me. I don't much care for this beer. I think the blackhook may have been a better choice, as I was debating between the two. I believe I chose poorly in this instance. Damn impulse purchases! Well, at least I only bought one.
