Notes/Commercial Description:
Regardless of whether you spend your winter months on the slopes, shoveling your driveway or just hiding out, Redhook Winterhook is a great way to chase off the winter chill. This year will be our 27th consecutive release of Winterhook. The recipe changes slightly every winter because nobody likes getting the exact same Holiday present year after year. Redhook’s 27th brew of Winterhook has roasted chocolate notes that smooth out the quick, spicy hop finish. The rich body and nutty, malty backbone make this winter ale slighty naughty and very nice.

Clear deep red-copper with a cream colored head that quickly fades to a thin film of foam. Aroma exhibits a touch of caramel and little else. Just a bit on the boring side of good beer. Taste has a decent amount of roastiness and a touch of coffee, both pretty unexpected. Funky lingering spicy bitterness on the finish pervades the aftertaste. Strong earthiness comes out after a few sips. Mouthfeel is a bit thin as well. Drinkability is OK, but one is more than enough for me. I don't much care for this beer. I think the blackhook may have been a better choice, as I was debating between the two. I believe I chose poorly in this instance. Damn impulse purchases! Well, at least I only bought one.

Love the ESB and IPA from this brewery, and expected a full-bodied winter warmer from them as well.

Poured nicely enough, copper-amber in color, with a decent off white head. Smells of winter spice, malt, not much more.

Mouthfeel was thinner than what I’d expected or hoped for. And though the malt and spice was evident in the taste, it seemed like this recipe needed more time to blend and mature. There were a lot of flavors, but not really one predominant taste.

A little disappointing, but not entirely bad. Just not what I'd expect from Redhook or from a winter warmer.

Appearance: Pours a clear, bright brown body with a moderate, off-white head.

Smell: The unfortunate aroma is formed by an offensive mixture of berries, soured citrus fruits, and dirty metal.

Taste: Bland, plain-tasting malt flavor with a slight nuttiness to it. The small amount of hops present provide a bit of grassiness. Finishes sour and with the taste of stewed greens.

Mouthfeel: Lackluster medium-thin body, with moderate carbonation and an exceedingly watery palate.

Drinkability: Something to keep in mind: there are many, far better winter beers. This one's a total washout.

dark ruby beer with only a few little bubbles on the edges, wanting to be at least a small head. aroma is of sharp malts. taste is flat, a rush of bitterness with a similar finish, and a mildly sweet aftertaste. rather one dimensional. mouthfeel is a bit flat and thin. there is just a bit of that "english ale" taste wanting to get out, but it's far in the background, along with a smidge of dark cherry.
i'd recommend grabbing something better.

Amber towards dark towards red; half a finger of head. Malt and earth smell. Taste of earth, spice, some metal - tang aftertaste with some straw and hops. Stale mouthfeel...sodapop. I don't feel inclined to have another. I think this is maybe better than this year's Wassail, which isn't saying much.

served into tall pilsner glass, from a 12oz.brown long neck bottle crimped-on cap.

Medium copper, reddish hue,off white head dissapated quickly to layer of foam.

Nice pleasing aroma, very spicey, citrusy, yeasty aromas Belgium-like spiceyness to the nose.

Spicey taste not as spicey as the aromas would suggest. A kind of bland taste midway through. A dry, tart finish a bit citrusy. Kind of a let down after the nice aromas.

Medium mouthfeel, slightly chewey,a bit harsh going down. Average beer not exciting, couldn't drink too many of these.

Pours a dark lager with little carbonated fizzy head which is a pure white. Not exactly what I would have expected for the style.

Smells a little bitter and biting. I dont sense any depth, little hops.

Not much spice, not much flavor for the style. No depth, not much of much.

Feels ok, maybe a little over carbonated.

Rather move forward from the beer than back to it. So many other options out there, I dont see myself wanting another one of these.

Welp, this one doesn’t warm the cockles of my tummy. Oh yeah, good start with nice looking DATED label (bottled 11/27/05, 6% abv). Sharp dark mahogany pour, topped by a frothy tan head, which unfortunately died rather quickly.

Pronounced leather and spices in the aroma, this should be good…. but wait! Darn! A moderately harsh leather and floral bite on the quaff. Just not enough malt to balance it out properly.

Crisp and tart, the 6% fries the little hairs off your tongue. If offered freebies, this is drinkable – if I have to buy, I’d go with several others before this one.

This beer is dark brown in color with a tan head.
The aroma is of malt and spice. There is also a funky smell that I would have to describe as overheated metal. Quite odd for a beer.
The flavor has a sweet toasty malt base and a mild blend of spice followed by a mild dose of hops. The metallic smell comes to life a little in the flavor as well, but is not as strong.
Mouth feel is light in body and generously carbonated.

Overall this one gets a meh.

Headless dark tea like colored pint pour with a thin ring lace with no carbonation notes showing.

At best, cola notes.

Woody bland dry straw flavors. Standard beer like malts are present.

Last swigs: On tap at the Drafting Room so I decided to celebrate the start of July with a Winter. This is a confused beer looking to distinguish what it is. Mostly it is a watered down porter. Less than average. Pass.

Beer is good. Happy weak beering.
