Normally I wouldn't waste any time on Red Hook, but I'd heard from several people that this was actually a good IPA. Nothing mind blowing, but yeah, it's a good IPA. It least it lived up to my expectations, but it didn't exceed them either. Obviously, that's nothing to complain about, merely an observation.
The beer pours to a pale golden yellow color with a very feint amber hue. Clarity is great. Good carbonation as well. The head sits at good inch for a few minutes and then falls to a film. Lacing covers the glass quite well.
The smell is good, but could stand to be a bit more formidable. Good hops bouqet, showing off some pine resinous aroma with a hint of grapefruit. The malt holds up quite well to the hops. Kind of pale and biscuity. Pretty good balance... it just needs "more."
The taste is good as well. Fairly non-descript pale malt flavor aside from a feint biscuit. The hops are there too, just as described in the nose. Still seems just a bit lacking. Has a good balanced bitterness, but some more flavoring hops could do wonders for this beer.
The body is thin. Fairly crackling carbonation, but somehow it still seems a bit soft. The bitterness is there, but it doesn't really jump out at you. Overall, it's very easy to drink, and not unpleasant at all. Just a good IPA, nothing more, nothing less.

This is my first IPA and I have to say, not a great impression has been made on me. I like the look and it had a hearty smell too it, like others said sort of a piney-ness to it. The taste however was very bitter, I don't feel that I'm experienced enough in the IPA category to properly judge, HOWEVER, the bitterness and aftertaste for me was not something I thoroughly enjoyed. I'll continue trying out various ipa's and rewrite a review if I feel I didn't do this one justice but I will say they put enough of a alcohol percentage in to it so that I didn't completely waste my money away!
