Notes/Commercial Description:
The generous addition of hops both during and at the end of the fermentation process (dry-hopping) gives our India Pale Ale its characteristic bitterness and piney citrus aroma and flavor. The medium body, crisp finish, and moderate alcohol and IBU levels makes this one of America’s most drinkable and best-selling IPAs.

The color is a pale tan and the head is not substantive but basically average, certainly acceptable. Too much carbonation that dissipates too quickly! The malt flavor is also perhaps too light to really taste satisfying. The alcohol is right for an IPA, but the hopping is weak, in terms of bitterness and aroma. I hear that this is much improved on draft and even better if you can find it served real-ale style, cask conditioned. Not as good as their ESB!

Long Hammer IPA is just Redhook IPA renamed in honor of the hard working railroad folk.

Pours a golden color with minimal head.

Decent hop smell, citrus elements along with a couple other fruit aromas, but a bit weak for an IPA.

Balance between the malt and the hops is good for an otherwise unremarkable offering from Redhook. Fairly smooth, hops in the forefront, bit thin tasting though.

Not an overwhelming IPA, so I can imagine this would be a good transition beer for those trying to get into the style.

appearance - Hazey yellow color with a white head and some lace left on the glass.

smell - Citrus, bready, and spices can be smelled.

taste - Hoppy flovor but not overpowering. Grassy, floral, piney and citrus taste here.

mouthfeel - Light body and some carbonation.

drinkability - Not a bad beer, was ok. Anheuser-Busch bought Redhook some time ago.

Pours a clear deep amber yellow, thin half finger head with minimal retention and some lacing, strings of bubbles from the carbonation are apparent.

Floral aroma with some resin and citrus, not over powerful in the nose but it could also be the pint glass I'm using.

Hop bitterness comes on pretty strong but drops off quickly, lemon pulp and floral notes start to become apparent but after the bitterness from the hops drops off everything else drops with it. Clean finish, feels like somethings missing...

Light in body, crisp and well carbonated fells a little watery at times.

Overall not a bad beer I was just left wanting some more flavor from it.

An easy pour yields an orange-yellow liquid with a <1-finger head with a retention of nil. Curiously there are what seems like millions of little particles in suspension which makes it look very thick like Jello or jelly. I like chunks in my hefeweizen, but I'm not sure what the heck I'm seeing here! Brewed six months ago so age shouldn't be a factor.

Mild hops in the nose and little else.

Taste is all hops, bitter but light... any malt flavors are completely overwhelmed by the hops. Still it's pretty refreshing on this 90+ degree day; I'll take it over a BMC any day!

Thin mouthfeel, but so is the taste and smell, so at least it's consistent!

Pretty easy-drinking... for a non-hophead like me probably easier than your typical "to-style" IPA. Pretty mild all the way around.

Bottle shared with my roommate.

A: The pour is a clear golden color with a fluffy white head that clings to the wall of the glass.

S: The nose starts off with citrus hops, floral hops, and perhaps a bit of urine. Some bread and cracker type malts are present as well.

T: This is moderately bitter, but not necessarily in a good way. Bitter grain flavors, primarily overcooked bread, along with a bitter pine flavor from the hops. Some mild citrus undertones as well as some floral notes.

M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation after the beer comes up to temperature.

D: Not really my favorite IPA, but it's not as terrible as some of the ratings indicate. But it is about as average as its score here.

12 oz bottle poured into a pub glass. A finger's width of head and leaves a spotty lacing. Color is a clear golden orange.

Smell is slightly sweet with a moderate hops bitterness. Taste also has a mild citric hops flavor.

Mouthfeel is light and clean. Seems more of an APA than an IPA. This is a no frills ale. Drinkable, but not very interesting.

I poured Long Hammer into a tulip glass. The bottle shape is cool and the minimalist artwork would make a great poster!

Appearance- The body is a golden-yellow with a slight amber tinge to it. The head was a standard, white foamy blob that reached a finger in width.

Smell- The nose is subtle, but really refreshing. The biscuit malt is the most noticeable, and hints that is going to be a more balanced IPA than a hop forward one. What little hops I can make out seem to have a slight citrus edge to them.

Taste- I take a drink, and I know there is hop bitterness, some malty sweetness, but it is really hard to pick out exactly what these flavors are!

Hop bitterness leads the way, not citrusy like on the nose. They are more grassy and floral. The back end on the drink is a wash between grain and some sweet, biscuit malt. This drinks more like a light lager than an IPA.

Mouth feel- The weight of the drink is not that bad. Almost medium bodied, but for an IPA, it could be much creamier. The lack of carbonation has this one almost feeling watery as it slides over the tongue, slightly fizzy too.

Overall- Long Hammer hints at some nice hop profiles, but they are not nearly as big as they should be. The malt back bone is a nice start, but now Red Hook has to seal the deal by giving this one some hop character and upping the creamy factor of the mouth feel.

On cask served in a pint; Advertised as "IPA w/ Summit and Nelson"

Appears a still orange with a foamy off-white cap. Retention is fair and there is minimal lacing.

Aromas of tangerines and hop oil with faint tobacco and a sticky caramel base. Pretty straightforward with nothing really jumping out at me.

The taste is very similar to the nose with tangerines, a dose of hop oil and mild bitterness. Some sticky caramel holds down the low end. Balanced and drinkable.

Oily mouthfeel with a light medium body. Being on cask, the carbonation is low and turns this into more of an english style IPA with a twist.

Pretty easy to drink, but the flavor profile isn't overwhelming enough to keep me happy glass after glass.

Crystal clear, light golden colored body. Half an inch of white foamy head faded fast. Above average amount of fast rising carbonation. Sticky lacing spots.

A very malted grain aroma. Hops are subdued but present in the background but don't overpower the bread quality. Sweet on the nose but not typical of style.

Pine taste of hops oil blends with an earthy grain flavor. An aftertaste had a soapy presence. Gritty grape note is also very faint in the back of the throat.

Watery, with a quick sharp burst of carbonation on the tongue. A very generic macro feel.

An average choice. Good to wash down a burger of hot dog. Nothing to go hunting for on the shelves. Weak offering in a field of much better choices.

Well, this shouldn't take long.

Not a bad beer, drinkable, but about as mediocre a brew as I have ever tried. The only thing that rose above average was the smell, which was pretty good. Otherwise, middle-of-the-road all 'round. A beer to look for in wastelands of good taste.

Pours yellow gold with light carbonation and a frothy two-finger head. Little retention. Decent lacing.

Nose is mainly citrus with a faint spiciness present. Lemon zest with a touch of cinnamon.

Hits flowery and very thin, almost watery in the mouth. Slight bitters and certainly below average IPA finish - more of a decent pale ale taste to this one.

I'd drink it again, but it would have to be on special and the only IPA available.

this IPA is always in stock at my local grocery, and the price keeps dropping, yesterday $5.79 a six pack, unreal.

although this is not one of the stronger IPA's redhooks standard ipa is better to me.

This one is supposed to have a stronger hop taste, but it does not work so much for me, almost tastes more like a winter beer.

I think this one is dry hopped.

I would suggest a try, but would recommend the standard redhook IPA first.

Poured on tap...a lot of IPA elements. Lacing was there throughout. Yellow with some carbonation. Thick foam. Decent retention.

Aroma was a piney hop one...but it was mild. I didn't get quite a kick from it like I expect.

Taste was basically an IPA light. Mouthfeel was also similar. Drinkability would be "higher" to people who don't really go for IPA's, I guess...its just an IPA starter. Try it out, it isn't bad..but not the greatest IPA

Poured into a pint glass.

A-Dark golden beer, ever-so-slightly hazy. The pale white head receded quickly.

S-A thin aroma of resiny, at times grassy, hops. It smells dry.

T-A pleasant, soft resinous hop flavor, backed by a slighter maltiness. Hops could have been more pronounced. Overall, the flavors seem subdued, but also well-balanced. Slight hop flavor persists to the clean, dry finish.

M-Good carbonation, moderate and light. A pleasant medium body. Nondescript.

D-A fine IPA. Certainly nothing near the best, but since this brew seems to be widely available at many restaurants and bars, at least one can have a shot at something moderately hoppy.

Pours a pretty gold with a white head that sticks all over the place. Nice appearance.

Slightly bready grassy hoppy aroma, run of the mill.

Thin malt struggles against the grassy hops. Crisp hop bite is pleasant but the malt dies more and more as the beer warms. Actually becomes bland later on. Pretty average.

Thin bodied with normal carbonation, I blame the filtering.

Ok beer, got it for cheap so I won't complain.

Kind of an average beer all around. Doesn't really taste totally like an IPA but parts of it do making this just an odd beer overall. It's a pretty high ABV and it does go down smooth for sure. But balance wise and style wise the lines are a little bit blurred and make it hard to judge this beer.

Bottle > Pint Glass
A - Pours a nice gold color, thin layer of fizzy head, minor lacing.
S - Weird crackery smell, pepper, some hidden pine, and just a really off skunky smell.
T - Taste follows the smell, there's a big time crackery flavor here, its like im eating saltine's people! You definitely get that odd skunk kinda flavor, dont know what thats about. This is a lame flavor for an IPA.
M - So little bitterness for an IPA, bad metallic aftertaste.
O - This is just flat out bad. Horrible example of an IPA, the smell is almost unbearable, and the taste doesnt save it at all.

Long time IPA lover, first time drinking Long Hammer, boy am I unimpressed.

Beer looks good its a pale coppery color with a light tan head. Smells a bit weak, what hops are there are a bit grassy and mild. Taste is pretty much the same, very mild hops for an IPA, grassy. A bit of caramel malts but mostly its pretty watery. In the mouth it feels thin and weak, like a real IPA with half water, but its a nice drinkable brew, gotta give it that.

This is a pretty bad beer, it tastes like what BMC would do if they made an IPA, oh wait... that's what it is.

12oz stubby bottle, pours golden in color with a nice frothy white head, good retention and excellent lace. Doesn't appear to be an IPA. My initial thoughts are that it's mislabeled, but given color isn't everything and it looks good, it gets the 4. Aromas are herbal hops, biscuit, faint citrus. Tastes are biscuity, herbal hops, grassy, sharply astringent, sharp cheddar cheese perhaps. This really tastes more like a pilsner than an IPA to me; and for a pilsner it's pretty good. For an IPA it's lacking some qualities I'd expect for the style. Mouth-feel is thin-to-medium, smooth and dry. Overall, kind of watered down or bland compared to its counterparts in the IPA category.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass, bottled 5.25.07 so let's see how it holds up...

A: Pours a bit cloudy (i can still see though it but still has a bit of a haze to it) golden straw color with a creamy looking one inch pure white head, not much carbonation is visible, a bit of sticky lacing clings to the sides of the glass.

S: Not very hop heavy as other IPAs, the nose on this one seems a bit more subdued almost like an english pale ale, bits of pine lemon and apple?!?! here and there, smells pretty sweet as well.

T/MF: I mean the hops are here and the bitterness is evident, but this does not taste like any ipa I've ever had, and I'm not saying that in a good way. It just seems a bit off because there is a bit of a apple taste mixed in with everything else. The beer is not quite as sweet as other people have been saying, but again this is just my opinion. Tastes a bit metallic as well, damn...The mouthfeel is pretty clean and the beer leaves a strip of hop oil on the tongue.

D: A strange interpretation of an ipa to be sure, maybe the worst beer that considers itself an IPA I've ever had, but it is still drinkable though not that enjoyable.

Pours light golden yellow with a thin head that sticks around. Some lacing sticks to glass.

The smell is of light citrus with a touch of lemon zest. Bready notes come through. Smells more like an APA.

The taste is of light citrus with floral notes and a lemon zest. Bready malt balances it out. Almost too much so. Lackluster finish.

It has something of a body to it, but the taste flees off the palate.

This one is weak. It seems caught between APA and IPA (an APA with higher alcohol, which to its credit is pretty well hidden)? Whatever...with so many solid IPA's out there, why bother ...

Well...my wife knows i like IPAs, so she picked this one up for me...a sweet gesture at least.

Kind of a a dull yellow pour...spotty lacing though, and a small ring of head remained for the duration.

Not much aroma on this one...especially for an IPA...where is the citrus, pine? Almost getting an adjunct scent in this one...oops.

Certainly not what you want in an IPA...but not horrible...more malt in this one than hops, a bit of sweetness initially but i'm having a tough time finding the hops.

I'm not gonna slam this one, even though I'm not sure IPA status is correct. It doesn't taste horrible...but it certainly doesn't taste like an IPA. Try again Long Hammer...I'll give you another shot.
