Notes/Commercial Description:
The generous addition of hops both during and at the end of the fermentation process (dry-hopping) gives our India Pale Ale its characteristic bitterness and piney citrus aroma and flavor. The medium body, crisp finish, and moderate alcohol and IBU levels makes this one of America’s most drinkable and best-selling IPAs.

I was lucky enough to first try this beer at the redhook brewery in portsmouth and since then Ive been blown away.

Its probably my favorite IPA. Its not overbearing in any sense. They managed to take a traditional recipe and balance it. Not as much hops as one would expect but enough to bring out the real aroma of the times.

Floral highlights with tart bitter hoppy undertones.

Get it, got it? good.

Say Cheese!

I had this in Ft. Lauderdale, without much head, but with a nice cheesey hop aroma, and strong cheddary hops permiates the flava: moreover, it's thin, light and very mildly creamy. The bitter cheese taste made it distinctive and flavorful from the first to last sip.

I'd rather one of this after mowing all this lawn down in South Florida than say, Mehilla. There's was British dude at the next table over-smoking, and talking loudly about his new telephoto lens, and some con artist who stole $200 million dollars, and Long Hammer stood up well to those affronts.

I'd like to see more big bouncing bubbles at the pour.

Red Hook Long Hammer IPA is one of my favorite Red Hooks...
6-pack for $7.99

A- Light golden-orange with two fingers of head after being poured, which settles to a thin white foam. Beer is very clear.

S- Bright hoppy wheat smell with a malty citrus note.

T- Burst of cascade hops, followed by a nice sweet malt notes accented with orange peel and coriander. finishes dry.

M- Tingly sensation that makes you want more.

D- Excellent Fall IPA for the price.

Serving type: 12oz. Bottle poured into chilled 16oz. glass.

Served from the bottle, at an Old Chicaogo. I like inclusion of the phrase "Ya Sure, You Betcha" on the label, being from Minnesota. The beer was a very solid IPA, good hops bitterness, even though I could've used more. I know, I'm a confessed Hophead. This is a good beer that I'd galdly get again.

For those of you who haven't seen or tried an IPA, they are a sort of ale that's neither from India nor pale. Like most pale ales, Red Hook is only "pale" in comparison to porter and stout. In fact, that's where the catagory Pale Ale got its name in the first place. The word India comes in because this particular sort of pale ale was originally designed to withstand the trip to the Indian colony from Britain with no loss of quality. In the case of Red Hook, the result is a very enjoyable if somewhat unique beer. The simplest way i can put it is, 'The taste of Guinness Draught without the weight.' Red Hook's head boils to a thick, white mass that remains over the beer throughout the whole pint. It does become noticably thinner in the center over time, but it never really fades away. Red Hook's start, body, and finish are very close to those of Guinness Draught. It is full-bodied with a rich hoppy flavor. It sits heavy on the tongue and has a consistent if somewhat thin palatte. Red Hook finished smooth with a clear and pleasant aftertaste. It differentiates from Guinness b/c of its color and feeling in your stomach. Red Hook is a deep amber color and when it hits your gut, you feel no weight or fullness (what some people call "drinking a loaf of bread" when talking about Guinness). The overall experience is a highly enjoyable beer with a rich flavor and a resulting feeling that you can down twice as many Red Hooks as stouts.

- Backdated tasting: I first reviewed this beer on 13SEP03, this post is based on notes from that review. -

Bought from a Food Lion in Petersburg, VA. Not sure how old this six pack is, but there is a very slight skunk-like odor---which is odd in an IPA.

I love the color, the sturdy brilliant white head, and the mouthfeel of this brew. It's a very tasty IPA and it stands out from many other IPAs I've had over the years. This seems like a more substantial or serious IPA than others (Saranac, for instance). I'll buy this one again, and I might even look into getting this on-keg! Well done, Red Hook!
