Notes/Commercial Description:
The generous addition of hops both during and at the end of the fermentation process (dry-hopping) gives our India Pale Ale its characteristic bitterness and piney citrus aroma and flavor. The medium body, crisp finish, and moderate alcohol and IBU levels makes this one of America’s most drinkable and best-selling IPAs.

A: light amber color with a good two finger head. Great lacing. Good clarity.

S: Subdued hop aroma. Citrus smells such as grapefruit, and bitter orange peel dominate. A light honey malty sweetness in the aroma.

T: Light citrus peel on the front. Moderate bitterness. Clean finish. Not a complex IPA but really easy to drink.

O: Very drinkable IPA. It does not stand out very much compared to many west coast IPAs. It is pretty refreshing and the bitterness is pretty toned down so I'd recommend this to someone just getting into IPAs.

Bottle into a pint. Bottled on 11/4/11.

a Clear off-yellow. Finger of white head dissipated quickly. Lacing clung to the glass in desperate spotty lines.

s Citrus hops and some burnt malt scents.

t Mild rosy/floral hops throughout. Some weak malt almost manages to overpower the hops.

m Thin and watery; the taste moved around the mouth easily and finished smooth.

o Not the hops I was expecting for an IPA. It is the main flavor of the beer, but not the star I would expect for an IPA. A hoppy bud light.

Review adapted from notes taken 8/16/11

Appearance: Clear golden orange, little white head with good retention and good lacing

Smell: Kind of odd - herbal, floral, with just a hint of pine and citrus - very mild, and arguably weird, but it's definitely not a bad hop profile - malts are pale, seem adequate

Taste: Not too shabby - more hoppy than the nose would suggest - some grapefruit rind, some orange rind - a little astringent - malts are mostly pale but a little toasted - a little earthy/muddy - not exactly complex, but not bad

Mouthfeel: Medium body, smooth, nice carbonation

Overall: Very average

I had this back in early 2008 and I thought the hop profile was terrible. Three years later, I'm somehow less negative. It's so mild that I find it hard to really complain about. This is about as average as it gets (but "average" should not imply "garbage"). It's decent.

Bottled Halloween 2011

Golden ale with no head, but evident carb from the excellent clarity. Smells like I remember: soapy, resiny, some grass and musk. I used to drink beer ice cold, this concealed the nose here very well.

Taste follows through with some grass, grapefruit and metal. The sweetness of the malt is a bit much, and I'm surprised by it considering how dry it looks, can't judge a book by its cover I guess. All in all pretty simple flavor, a beer I would sick on somebody interested in IPA's, then I would hand them something better.

Poured into a glass mug, the beet is a hazy medium gold, with about a two finger white head building. It dissipates fast, but leaves good lacing.
Smell is of piney hops and malt.
Tasting the beer the piney hops a present, but are soon overpowered by malt and honey flavors. The finish is rather weak for an IPA.
Nice drinkable beer, but not necessarily the best representative of an IPA.

Two finger thick head on a clear dark golden body. Nice lacing. Very nice woody, pine and wet sock hop like aroma. The flavor is a bit of a let down. Initially it is piney hop heavy but it waters down quickly in the finish. A nice coriander and floral note though. Moderate carbonation and medium body. Overall this one is an average beer and a below average IPA. More like an IPA of the masses or a weak APA.
