Redhook Ale Brewery
New Hampshire, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The generous addition of hops both during and at the end of the fermentation process (dry-hopping) gives our India Pale Ale its characteristic bitterness and piney citrus aroma and flavor. The medium body, crisp finish, and moderate alcohol and IBU levels makes this one of America’s most drinkable and best-selling IPAs.

There is a strong hoppy-citrus aroma from the bottle; however, the nose largely disappears after pouring with the exception of a delicate must. Color does well to the description of pale ale, though with a slight buttery-amber shade to it. Pours with little to no head and clarity leaves a little to be desired, but is by no means something to complain about. Taste is flavorful at first with a mouthful of hops and bitterness, but diminishes to a watery, musty ale by the end of the glass. The beer is surprisingly drinkable with a thin, light body and no remarkably unpleasing tastes aside from a mild metallic undertone. Not necessarily indicative of the IPA style, but by no means a bad beer considering it was both smooth and balanced.

Nice IPA. Quite a bit less potent than most west coast IPAs. Darker than a lager but not as dark as some IPAs. Again the smell and taste are relatively subtle, but a great beer I'd love to drink on many occasions. Extremely drinkable.

Sparkly clear carbonated gold, your basic champagne-like AAL appearance.

Smells like skunked melon.

Tastes like bitter aluminum.

This may be worse than your basic, cheap, conglomerate AAL. Yuck!

Appearance: Clear light yellow, white cap with good lacing.

Aroma: Pine, citrus hops.

Taste: Starts off well enough, hops and a small amount of malt. Hops quickly take over and dominate all the way through to the finish which carries a lingering hop bitterness.

Texture: Rather thin and otherwise unremarkable.

Overall: Not a good impression though it's not a bad taste. Hop presence is there but lacks enough malt to balance. I believe we're past the point where just adding more hops is enough to set the product apart.

Poured into pint.
Pours slightly hazy golden beer with thin off-white head, low retention.
Smell - biscuity, lemony.
Taste - malts, medicinal bitterness.
Light body, soft carbonation, very plain and insipid.
Poor for american and also far away from english IPA.

A bit pale in color with a thin, quickly dissipating, but sill slightly craggly head. Aroma is pleasant, with pine and some tropical fruit. Taste wise, hop flavor is present, but somehow flat and one dimensional. Malt presence is lacking, which is unfortunate because it could lend some needed complexity to this beer. Mouthfeel is good carbonation wise, but a bit watery. Some off flavors as the beer warms. Definitely not my first choice in the world of IPAs, but you could do worse. I bought a 6 pack of this at a local gas station for 5 bucks, where it was being sold at 50%off. For that price, you could do MUCH worse. If I were to find this stuff that deeply discounted again, I would buy it, and be happy with my purchase. If not, I wouldn't seek it out, but if someone offered me one I would not complain about it.

Really bubbly golden body, head dissapated within 5 seconds
Corn, grain, barley, apple
Tastes exactly how it smells plus a little bit of hops
Very dry and light bodied
If it had 5% less flavor it'd be indisinguishable as an IPA and would just be a bud light. Easy drinking though

L-Okay color. pours a straw-red ambe-rish with a nice head that loses volume quickly.
S-Really not much, mainly malt with a little bit of hops; very little hops.
T-Again its alright, slight bitterness from a slight bit of hops that I think I can taste. Its really just a malty beer.
F-Has the mouthfeel of a light domestic beer. Crisp but nothing special.
O-I hadn't ever heard about this beer, so I didn't know what to expect. This beer is just okay. If I could think of a comparison it would almost be the IPA comparison to PBR. I don't even know if it is even an IPA... With that being said, this beer is refreshing, I would drink this beer at a pool party or an event similar. I wouldn't seek this beer out again though. It really isn't anything special at all. Pretty boring.

Redhook Ale Brewery - Long Hammer IPA. 6.2% ABV. 12oz bottle poured into snifter. Bottled 1/6/16.

Look: Body is a bright orange/yellow, with a half finger white head, that quickly dissipates into a ring. Great clarity.

Smell: Mainly bready malt, along with some faint hops and some citrus and tropical fruit; the aroma seems dull and weak.

Feel: Light body, almost medium. Carbonation is crisp and lively.

Taste: Again, mainly bready malt provides most of the flavor, leaving a cracker like taste. Some hop flavor and bitterness appear, along with the tropical and citrus fruits, but are soon gone, leaving more malt taste.

Overall: This is pretty malty for an IPA, with very little hop presence; it's not bad, but not a good IPA in terms of that. I would recommend this beer to those looking to get into bitter beers, since it has some hop presence, without being too bitter.

L: bright and gold with little head
S: actually quite dull in its smell even after a gentle stir
T: hoppy from start to finish and after. Somewhat bitter almost like a grapefruit
F: bright and carbonated, maybe a little too much for my taste
O: not the best. I look forward to exploring more in the world of IPA

This is obviously not a top tier IPA. Some might say it's a low grade IPA. I say it's a very drinkable pale ale - but not necessarily a true IPA given that the the bitterness is on the low end. That being said it's decent, it's very drinkable and best of all it's cheap. Not much on the complexity side but a very enjoyable beer none the less. It's actually much way better on tap. Either way this is a solid hoppy beer be it an IPA or a nice pale ale - none the less it's a good beer.

Bottle into a New Belgium snifter. Clear light golden in appearane with good carbonation. About 1 finger of bubbly white foam on top that dissipated quickly. Light citrus, grapefruit, and pineapple on the nose along with a fairly strong bready malt aroma. The taste follows, as I get a lot more malt than anything. There is a noticable hop resin flavor in there along with some floral notes. Not bad tasting, but not all that great. Albeit being a bit malty, it is balanced well. Pretty nice mouthfeel - smooth and creamy as it warmed a little. This would be a decent beer for someone who was looking to transition into drinking IPAs but didn't want to jump into the deep end.

The best in its price range. 2.50 for a 22oz glass bottle at every store I've seen it stocked, period. I live in Northern California.
Color close to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Less lacing, white (ish) head, dissipates pretty quickly.
Smells kinda like Lagunitas Ipa, but... slightly off. Smells cheaper.
Tastes like Lag Ipa, if not better. I find this more balanced than Lag, similar hop profile. Most Lagunitas beer (minus Lil Sumpin) IMO taste unbalanced, and kinda shitty, in their own unique way. This LH does the hop profile justice, without going too far.
Feels: Smoother than Lag, not as smooth as Sierra Nevada Pale or even Torpedo.
Lagunitas admits they suck it. This is better and half the price. At least red hook doesn't lie and claim it's craft beer. There are many, many beers that are too good to compare, but for the thrifty IPA buzz, this is the one. Lagunitas fans, save your money with this or find a truly well made beer. Just my two or three cents.

I first had the Long Hammer IPA at my club's associate's home and I was very impressed with it's flavor. Not bitter at all. It's very impressive and I like it.

bought this at sprouts....

a seemed flat on the pour - less than a finger of head settles to a thin foam

very clear - golden amber hue

s - kind of - rubbery? wierd and not particularly impressive. certainly NOT a sufficient hoppiness for an IPA

t truth be told, this angers me. im not ready to call this an IPA bit of a chlorine taste.

Pours a pale yellow, left a fizzy white head that dissipated immediately.

Smell is rather uninspired, malty tones dominate, which for an IPA is odd, skunky overtones automatically turn me off.

This beer has no redeeming qualities, but only minor off tastes detract from it as well, if anything is "eh" it would be this. An IPA though, it is not, for no hops are in this flavor profile, or they are so dilute as to be nonexistent.

Light bodied, thin, crisp, and drinkable, but doesn't really save it.

I would not buy this again.

This 6.2% ABV IPA is delicious and does a good job at competing with other global giants.

Look-It pours a crystal clear yellow golden color as I expected, but it was very appealing.

Smell-It smells of citrus and pine hops and a subtle malt backbone of honey-suckle and roasted grains.

Taste-The taste is delicious. It follows the nose, but I get more bitters, but not overwhelmingly so and I taste a lot of pine and citrus such as grapefruit rind, orange, and tangerine.I get some floral hops as well and a biscuit-oily resin that manifests itself.

Mouthfeel-It is definitely on the moderate side of medium-bodied and there is a pleasant coating on the tongue that lingers from the hop oils. The malts aren’t too sweet and balance everything out.

Overall-This is a decent beer, but isn’t anything earth shattering. It is hard to compete with other giants in the world, but this IPA by Red Hook does a decent job at competing. I will say that the hops come through really nice. Cheers!

Pours a pale golden color with a fuzzy, boiled rice in a pan looking head, leaving diseased lace as it recedes.

Smells like an adjunct lager with grainy, toasted aromas and a malt skunk. Did I just pour a Molson Canadian?

A skunky, heavy grain bill with corn and barley, tailing with a faint pine note.

Feel is watery, with moderate carbonation, morphing into a light creaminess as it fades into water again.

An undoubtedly boring IPA. This was more like a hoppy lager than anything.

Bottle - Gift Chicago

Golden amber, minimal white head. Citrus and sweet hoppy aroma. Pleasant mix of strong sweet yet good mix w/bitter taste. Strong feel, medium carbonation. Overall good IPA offering I'll seek out in the future.

Golden/Pale Yellow Color...Medium Body with a slight haze
The Beer has a sweet smell and dull breadiness when sloshed about...the malts take the sniff in the wrong direction
There are bold hops although without too much character and for a lower abv IPA this brew comes across boozy
Overall this one is not real tasty is plenty bitter and gets by on boldness as a substitute for lack of anything special.

Look: Pours a dark light gold. Very little white head.
Aroma: A little bit of pine followed by citrus - some grapefruit. Not very powerful.
Taste: Bitter citrus and malts. More hoppy, not very well balanced but not a mess either
Feel: More or less dry. Medium bodied; medium/high carbonation.
Overall: It's not a bad IPA, but nothing to rave about.

Pours slightly on the light side. A little darker than your average AAL. Nose is some hops, citrus, resin. Taste follows the nose. Muted hops, citrus, resin. A little bit of bitterness on the finish. Mouthfeel is decent, yet a bit on the watery side. There's just enough hops and bitterness to keep you interested. Overall, it's quite refreshing. I've had this on tap also and much preferred the draft version. Good price for a six pack. I'll probably pick up again if I cannot afford the other IPA's I like better than Long Hammer. It's an inoffensive beer, but not much going on.

Slightly hazy golden color with white head. Aroma has some fruity, tropical hops and some butter biscuits. Taste is balanced, you get the hops and also the malts. Aftertaste gets quite bitter. Quite watery for 6.2% abv but overall it's a decent IPA.

Round 1-Value
Redhook Longhammer IPA @ $2.99 per 22 oz. bottle with 6.2% ABV

Round 2-Aroma
Citrusy pinecone

Round 3-Flavor
Understated hops and a piney element

Round 4-Finish
30 seconds

Round 5-Packaging
The 22 oz. bottle profile is unique because of the short neck. The label is short on creativity, as well. Mountains divide the label in half paying homage the Cascades climbing community. I appreciate the informative aspects of the label (i.e. flavor profile, bottled on date, and brewing technique information).

Results
Redhook is a clear superior dollar value winner at $2.99 per deuce-deuce. Redhook IPA is among the best deal in the beer world and a uniquely drinking IPA.
