Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
The generous addition of hops both during and at the end of the fermentation process (dry-hopping) gives our India Pale Ale its characteristic bitterness and piney citrus aroma and flavor. The medium body, crisp finish, and moderate alcohol and IBU levels makes this one of America’s most drinkable and best-selling IPAs.

Pours a golden color with about a finger of thin head that dissipates quickly into a thin white film around the edges.

Slight citrus (orange) aroma with some notes of grass. Very underwhelming for an American IPA.

Taste is also underwhelming for an American IPA. Almost no malt sweetness and very little actual hop flavor with pronounced bitterness from start to finish.

Carbonation is probably the best part of this beer as the mouthfeel is excellent. Slightly buttery reminds me of a bitter Sam Summer Ale.

Overall this is a mostly poor example of a modern American IPA. I expected a lot from this beer but alas it did not deliver. Their Winter Hook, on the other hand is amazing!

well, it's a clear golden brew with a white head that dissappears almost as fast as you can pour it. Pine, citrus, and malt notes fight for dominance on the nose, although there is no clear victor. Malt definitely strikes me as the most prevelant flavor, although citrus is a close second, with the pine only becoming apparent in the finish. The finish is bittersweet. The carbonation is over the top, but it is counter-acted by a beautiful oily mouthfeel. I feel like I am becoming more scrupulous in my reviews, but maybe that is a good thing. This used to be one of my favorite brews, but now it's okay at best.

Pours a very clear yellow. Smells like a regular beer that is well crafted. Doesn't invite a strong hop presence, and any note that is hop like is not very interesting. Taste is clean and sweetish with an only slight hop bitterness, and not as hop forward as an IPA should be. Not hardly a bitter sustain Mouthfeel is nice and a bit dry and carbonation is way high adding to an overall creaminess. This is like a regular old beer, and tastes like it should, but this isn't an IPA.

A - Pale gold, white head has some retention and lacing. Not bad.

S/T - Herbal hops, backed up by some pale malts, grainy, cereal grain sweetness, finishing lightly bitter with some pine and herbal notes. Some astringency.

M - Light body, lively carbonation. Turns thin halfway through, a little watery. Slight astringency.

O - Lighter, less bold flavors and aroma than the standard IPA. Just seems to be lacking the needed depth in the style.

Pours with a good head that stays, minimal lace. Yellow to amber color. Smells of orange and grain. Mouth is thin, with slight bitter and foam. Orange profile with a bit of juicy fruit at the end. Not very hoppy, not real bitter, in fact, more like a pale ale than a IPA. Overall, okay, but more like a BMC style "IPA" than a real IPA.

Pours a clear golden orange with a thin white head. A hint of pine in the aroma. Taste is dry bready flavor up front, followed by some citrus and pine. A bit watery for its alcohol content. Overall a pretty good tasting, but somewhat light version of an IPA.

M - Medium bodied with good carbonation.

Best Budget IPA

Amber/copper brown to orange in color. I am happy to say that this is a diamond in the rough.

I had heard that this beer was not too good from the store employees, but my satisfaction was immense

Smell: hop, pine, and hemp. Very herbal in scent!

Taste: pine, oak, and hop! Smooth finish from the malt

Mouthfeel: Barely carbonated!

Overall, this is a brilliant beer! Try it today.

A: amber, carbonated, thin carbonated head (very bubbly), dissipated quickly after pouring

S: very faint hops, almost no smell at all

T: light resin hoppiness but very light, slight sharpness, slight yeasty aftertaste

M: very carbonated, can feel the carbonation if you let it sit in your mouth - fizzy on the tongue, feels fizzy when swallowing. Carbonation is almost distracting from the flavor.

Overall: light and easily drinkable, but nothing particularly memorable as an IPA

Hammer IPA pours a clear yellow color with a nice size white head. There is a weak floral aroma. The taste has a nice floral taste, but finishes a bit watery, and on a malty backbone. The taste is almost full, a bit watery, but very drinkable. Overall its a decent IPA.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - golden in color. One inch head which dissipates in about 2 minutes. Some lacing.

Smell - grapefruit. Other sweet scents but nothing overpowering.

Taste - grapefruit, lemon, and other sweet hops. Somewhat coppery or metallic

Mouthfeel - a little syrupy but overall very smooth

Overall - not a bad little beer. A little weak on the hops for an ipa but overall an above average ipa offering from Red Hook.

22 oz poured into Terrible Beauty pint glass.

pours a light tea color into a light, crisp amber. head disipates rather quickly, slippery lacing rather weak.

hops smell super pear-y. not in a dense way, purely aromatic. but it's definitely there.

initial taste is rather bland and flat. hops taste stale or something. not too bad, but certainly not the greatest.

aftertaste is nothing to write home about. mouthfeel is sticky and dry to an eventually wet and tangy. sort of odd.

had this beer once at bumbershoot or a concert somewhere. after not enjoy an esb, i swore to avoid red hook. has prevailed my year in washington, but today i got gas on the way home and they had budweiser, steel reserve, rainier, and red hook ipa. should have got the rainier.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams Boston Lager glass. Taken from a Redhook mixed twelve pack.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy, pale golden color. It has a medium-sized, fizzy head that dissipates quickly and leaves some modest lacing.

Smell: Has a piney, grassy hop aroma backed by some slightly sweet maltiness.

Taste: Has a bitter, grassy hoppiness to it. Has a crisp, malty finish.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and light-bodied.

Overall: A fairly standard IPA. Nothing special, but drinkable and generally unoffensive.

a murky orange-yellow pour with 1/2" of head which disappeared immediately. smells of citrus grapefruit, wet grass, very earthy. the taste is a toasted like bitterness up front followed by a tree sap/piney bitterness, slight hint of sweetness coming from the malt and a citrus finish. the body leaves much to be desired - a very watery medium body with low carbonation.

as far as smell and taste this beer is great, however - everything else is very sub-par at best, which makes this ipa a poor contender considering the thousand others i could be drinking. my first red hook beer and i have to say, aside from the nice bottle design, i'm not impressed at all.

I was fairly underwhelmed by this beer. The hop presence in this IPA is minimal in both the taste and smell. Its not a bad beer overall but it is in my mind a poor example of an AIPA.

It pours a hazy light yellow with a white head.

If you want a nice slightly hoppy beer that is easy drinking I would recommend this. If you're looking for a nice hoppy IPA look elsewhere.

This beer did pair with my dinner very nicely because it had enough flavor to through the pork chops but didn't overpower anything. I believe that as a food pairing beer this is actually and excellent choice.

Thanks Bob for the beer.

A: Poured from a bottle to glass and nice straw color with a decent amount of foam.

S: Aroma is a malty goodness with a slightly hopped scent to it.

T: Taste is of malts and then a slight hop earthy and a bit of floral to it nice balance.

M: Mouthfeel is a medium body with nice carbonation to it.

O: Overall a good drinkable beer with a little something extra for the effort. not an everyday drinker but wouldn't it be great to have every day.

Pours a clear straw yellow with ample white head, but poor retention. Aroma is floral and citrus hop, but more on par with a pale ale rather than an IPA. Taste follows with clean bitterness and floral and citrus hop. Mouthfeel is thin, but crisp and clean. Good drinker, perfect for washing down a bag of chips or something like that, but not something I would drink if I wanted to experience an IPA, because this is more like a slightly hoppy blond ale.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass.
A-Nice golden color. Very appealing.

S-Mild citrus and grapefruity aroma.

T-Tastes more like a mild pale ale compared to other IPAs I've had. In fact, I remember this being a little more on the bitter side but not overwhelming.

M-Light, not too watery, not too heavy at all.

O-This was the first IPA I drank-a few years back-and it's what made me fall in love with this particular style, but for some reason I remember it being 6.7% ABV, and it had a stronger hop flavor. It's very drinkable, but I'm disappointed.

Poured into a tulip from a bomber. 2-finger off-white head that dissipated quickly. Little lacing. The beer is pretty, filtered and traditional-looking.

Citrusy hops in the nose, lemon tartness, boozy atringency. Nice.

Flat. Vacant, watery, not particularly hoppy or malty. Clean, but absent of a lot of flavor.

We've all had this IPA a dozen times before. It's not bad, but it doesn't stand out in any way.

12oz into pint

Look is a yellow-gold with a small white head. Smell is oily pine, white bread. Taste is bitter one-note piney hops with some light bready malt. Feel is a medium but a tad over-carbonated.

Very average IPA that is more like a regular pale with some additional hopping. Not very impressive but good for the price. Cheaper than most other IPAs.

A - Pours a clear light golden colour, finger of head with little retention and no real lacing.

S - Scent is a tad mild, but dominated by sweet citrus hop notes a touch of pine and cotton candy on the finish.

T - A decent hop profile, though is more mellow, with some earthy citrus tones balanced out with a bready caramel malt profile.

M - Medium bodies, smooth and a touch of dryness on the finish.

I - A decent IPA that is nicely balanced and easily sessioned, but could certainly use a boost to kick it into the next level.

Kind of light for an IPA I think. A very light amber with an aveage size head. Fast fading.
Aroma is light, but there are hints of hops and malts, why one can almost pull out some citrus hops.
Flavor while not bad is rather thin. You can pull out some citrus hops and some bready malts but there real light. A bitter ending.
To me drinks more like a pale ale. It.s light and thin on the palette.
Bought up in lake Placid were my options were limited. And since I'm a reviewer I picked up this variety pack at the local market.
This is a good average beer no frills. I'd be happy to drink this at any one of those chain restarunts.

Appearance: A yellow/pale amber color. Pours with a pretty nice head, but it goes away after a couple minutes. There's little to no lacing.

Smell: Hardly there. Maybe some hoppiness or sweetness, but it's hard to detect much of anything.

Taste: Like the smell, hard to get much out of it. As an IPA, it's a pretty big disappointment, but if you just look at it as a BEER, it's mediocre. Slight hoppiness with minor bitterness. Bits of malt. It's really just light.

Mouthfeel: Decent carbonation, but with the lack of taste, it's sort of watery, really.

Everything about this beer is light. The appearance, smell, taste... like I said, it's not a bad beer or anything, but it sure isn't much of an IPA. If you're used to BMC's, you'll probably like this one, as it doesn't have much taste to speak of. I wouldn't be opposed to drinking another one of these, but I probably won't seek it out again.

12oz : pint glass

Pours a clear golden with a fizzy white head.

Aroma is resiny, skunky weed/pine hops.

Again more resiny pine, but again with a faint skunkiness thrown in.

Medium body, with fairly average carbonation.

It has potential, but the faint skunkiness is definitely a negative. I'm not sure how it could be skunked from light exposure, as the six pack carrier covers almost the entire bottle, but I suppose anything is possible. Would like to give it another shot to see if I did get a light struck bottle.
