Appearance - Transcluscent ruby with a wispy cream colored head.

Smell - Maple syrup, alcohol, raisins, plums, flowery hops.

Taste - Everything from the smell, plus some sort of wood, I'm not sure the type. There's also a dash of bittering hops, just enough to keep the sweetness from being overwhelming. There's also plenty of alcohol heat.

Mouthfeel - Medium body with low carbonation.

Notes - I'm a bit conflicted with this one. It's wonderfully complex and malty, but it's got way too much alcohol heat for my taste. It just beats you over the head with its ABV, even for a barleywine. Some would love this beer, but it's just not for me I guess.

2010 12 oz. bottle poured into an extended tulip style glass. Looks good nice tangerine/orange color with a slightly hazy look to it. Nice slightest of slight off white colored head with medium to small bubbles with excellent lacing and glass retention.

Smell is good. Big in both ways bot the malt and hop area. Plenty of caramel malts that are nice and roasted. There's also some nice pine aromas and some tangerine peel, pretty good all around.

Not really a ton to say about the flavor profile but there's a lot of flavor. A lot of up front sweetness. Plenty of caramel and not quite as much toffee tones. Then there's a TON of pine resin flavored hops that are very strong, it's pretty nice though and then theres some nice citrus peel flavors, grapefutie, clementine, tangerine, and some orange. Nice all around.

Appropriate full bodied flavor, lingers a little bit. Really nice carbonation level with a nice gritty dry bitter finish. Good carbonation level even with three years on it, but I guess this is a style that ages well. Really good sipper, but goes down pretty quick, really drinkable. This was one of the first beers I really liked when I got into craft beer though glad I still like it.

Bottle pour at mrbubbler's tasting.

Bottled 9/8/09.

Pours a clear dark honey orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, citrus zest, and slight cardboard aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and caramel flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is showing a slight amount of oxidation but the hops are still present in this one.

12 oz bottle was poured into a snifter. 2010 bottle version bottles on 8/31/10.

Appearance: This beer poured a dismal head that has reduced to an outer ring. It is a copper amber haze with no clarity, but slow moving bubbles can be seen coming up the side of the glass.

Smell: Toffee, butterscotch, caramel malty goodness. The citrus hops have held up well with the last 2.5 years. Grapefruit and tangerine goodness. That's awesome.

Taste: malts are there, but the bitterness is more noticeable in the taste. Amazing.

Mouthfeel: Silky smooth, full bodied, low to medium bodied, tingly bitterness, and finishes a little dry too.

Overall: A nice barleywine. It should the test of time, but the malts could have balanced things out a bit more from this hop bomb.
