Upon opening, I smell well-defined malt and a hint of dark roast coffee. The ale itself pours a beautiful, opaque ebony and is topped off with a decent, frothy, tan head.
This porter is true to its label "Dark, but not bitter." It isn't bitter and it doesn't really pack a punch. It has depth, but not so much that it is a challenge to drink. It is rather accessible. But, that is also why I didn't mark this brew higher. It could use a little extra splash of that "special something". It does have a nice roasty-toasty flavor to it, with hints of chocolate, coffee and brown sugar, but...nothing above and beyond the call of duty.
Overall, Blackhook is a user-friendly porter. It has flavor, it has a mild finish and seems to have an enjoyable, unassuming quality to it. This is not bad for a mass production beer. I would definately be interested in a taste of this off of the tap. Perhaps the next Seattle trip with bring about this opportunity :)
For food recommendations...a thick, char-grilled burger would do well...maybe with some onion rings to bring out the sweet undertones of the brew.
