22 oz bottle poured into a UK pint glass

appearance: pitch black perhaps a bit of a dark brownish hue and dark coffee colored creamy head.

Aroma: surprisingly mild aroma, bit of coffee of course and some sweetish esters, lactose?

Taste: Super rich and bold, dark dark and bitter espresso with no cream and a bit of sugar. Kind of soapy actually.

Overall: This a a big time raw coffee brew. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy and this beer is pretty rough around the edges with just brewed espresso flavor. Definitely worth a try, split one is my recommendation or you will be drinking this for a really long time, which I guess wouldnt be too bad

Didnt care for the smell,somewhat mineraly,nice chocolaty head though.Was expecting a little more rich flavor though,wasnt to bad but wouldnt seek it out again.

Presentation: 12 oz. short brown twist. Freshness date clearly marked. Blurb about being brewed with Starbucks Coffee.

Appearance: Black, very black in colour with a huge sticky tan froth that sticks like taffy. The actual pouring of this beer had an awesome cascading affect!

Smell: Hmm ... Starbucks coffee, iced, with roasted undertones.

Taste: Potent, smooth and creamy flavours of iced Starbucks Coffee, roasted barley and hints of dark chocolate. Hop bitterness is slightly assertive along with the coffee and roasted barley. The finish is lingering coffee and sugar/honey.

Notes: Damn! What a beer! If you love stout and good coffee then this will be a "to die for" beer! The best darn coffee stout ever brewed.

22oz bomber. Deep dark brown pour that borders on black with a quarter inch of light tan bubbles atop the brew that quickly becomes a ring. Aromas of somewhat astringent roasted malt that has a grainy quality to it. The bitter coffee comes through nicely along with a hint of cocoa, vanilla and a mild nutty quality. Not as forward or robust as I was expecting.

First sip brings a dark roasted grain malt upfront that moves into notes of cocoa and a subtle fruitiness as well. The bitter coffee moves in and makes itself known along with a nutty accent and a touch of caramel and vanilla. Hits with a kick of bitterness on the finish and lingering coffee. A tad bit astringent in the flavor as well.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side for an imperial stout, however it has a good creaminess from the carbonation. The body has a slightly rough graininess to it that I don't find too enjoyable. Overall, it's near the bottom of the pile of coffee stouts for me. I doubt I would drink it again.

A middle of the road Imperial Stout for me. 22oz bottle labeled Batch 08-0410. It was black in color with a thin tan head; the head persisted nicely. Aroma was all coffee/roasted malt. Taste followed form, although there was a hint of cocoa, which I think evened things out because the beer was not bitter. Pleasant beer.

22 oz bottle, batch 08-0410, dated Oct 08 08. Pours brown with a smallish dark brown head that quickly diminishes.

The aroma is very subdued - sweet chocolate and grains with a touch of coffee (probably because I'm looking for it).

The flavor is sweet bakers chocolate and roasted malts with some chalky acidic bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and watery.

Overall, this is not very good. It has a bunch of off-notes, and where's the coffee? I can maybe find a little, but only because I'm looking so hard.

Pours a very dark brown/almost black with a decent head. Decent retention & lacing. Smells of some dark chocolate, coffee notes, roasted malts. Taste is of some dark chocolate, hints of coffee/espresso but I wish it was a bit more forward to be honest. Great mouthfeel/body, rich, finsihes semi-dry. Good drinkability but I was expecting much more due to the hype.

The Double Black Stout is a limited release beer. It was originally created in 1995, but Redhook stopped making it in 2000. Then, in 2008, they brought it back as a limited release.

The aroma is malty with... you guessed it, coffee. Smells great. Many people have stressed the coffee part. True, it has coffee in the aroma and flavour. There is also a hint of toffee and chocolate. As an imperial stout is true to style, full bodied with a good mouthfeel. It is not creamy, it is big. There is a bitterness, almost like bitter chocolate, in the aftertaste.

22oz brown bomber with a freshness date. Blueline series label.

Stout black color, decent tan lacing. Fresh brewed ice coffee, roasted grain, burnt bread, mild molasses and a hint of dark fruit and alcohol in the aroma. Deep smoothness and a little creamy, big roasted flavor open up with each sip. Coffee is layered throughout with hints of dark chocolate and with a hint of alcohol it is almost reminiscent of a tiramisu flavor. Modest hopping, hint of dried dark fruit and charred wood. Finishes roasty with coffee tone, lands semi-dry.

Almost a cup a joe, well done Redhook ... would love to have this brew once in a while when I am hankering for a coffee beer.

Batch 08-0410, 22 ounce bomber. Pours near black, mocha head, creamy and lasting, leaves plenty of fine lacing, as well as tons of spotty lace upon a gentle swirl. The expected coffee in the nose, also some sweet malts and vanilla come through. Yum yum yum....coffee notes, of course, vanilla, smoke, oak, sweet malts, bananas, tobacco, sweet, smooth, silky in the mouth and over the tongue and thoroughly enjoyable. Great as a starter stouts for newbies, as a cold weather sipper, as a marinade component. I really enjoyed this one, highly recommended.

Bomber from Beverages 4 Less. Pours black with brown/mahogany edges. Short, thick tan head with super-heavy lacing. Not even swishing the beer around would get it off. Nose of burnt coffee, some charred wood, roasted oats, and cream. Taste is slightly acrid in the coffee flavors; kind of like old coffee. Blends well with the dark and milk chocolate flavors, a bit oaty and grainy at times. No cream/milk follow-through as in the nose. Some soy sauce towards the back as the beer warms. A bit thin in the motuhfeel in terms of the "Imperial" status, but consistent with a regular stout.

Served just below cellar temperature in a crystal snifter.

Obsydian color with no light getting through. A finely bubbled head of light brown foam rises up a bit and settles out quickly.

Aroma of cocoa and roasted malt, sharp burnt coffee, some winey notes.

Flavor is similar to the aroma, darkly roasted malt, hints of cocoa, sharp coffee, woody notes, hints of bourbon in the finish, and a cofee linger. Expected more complexity.

Mouthfeel is big and creamy and smooth, but has some tannins to it. Pretty drinkable, good sipper.

Pours like you would expect something called double black to pour. Thin, tan head just about stays with the beer all the way through.

I get plenty of coffee and roasted malts upon first sniff.

I taste the above with plenty of chocolate abound. This is pretty good... it's not Starbucks good, but this is not bad at all.

Very thin and light compared to a lot of other coffee stouts out there. Very drinkable.

I used to drink Redhook quite a bit, and I vaguely remember this one all those years ago. I gave up on this brewery a long time ago but thought I should revisit this one in respect to my fresh out of college memories. I'm glad I did and I hope they continue to make this. The $5 price tag is much appreciated as well.

Picked this up at Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours completely black with hardly any head. Upon emptying out the bomber with zest I got about one-finger of tan head that dissipated into a wispy layer of bubbles on top and a medium-sized ring around the glass. Not much lacing.

Smells largely of coffee and roasted malts, with the coffee being slowly replaced with chocolate as the beer warms.

Tastes similar to how it smells. A whole lot of coffee up front with roasted malts lurking in the background. Mild hits of chocolate come out as the beer warms, but coffee and roasted malts rule throughout. There's a solidly bitter ending throughout.

Mouthfeel is good. It's thick and very carbonated, again, this may be attributed to a weak pour.

Drinkability is good. This beer is good but not great. That being said, I didn't have a problem finishing the bomber.

Overall this didn't quite live up to the excitement when it was re-released, at least to me, but it is a very good beer for the price. Worth a shot.

Dark muddy beer that is the color of burnt motor oil. There is a milked coffee head that is firm and thickly rises above the liquid. Not a bad start, this one is a looker.

Smell is a lot on the weak side for a double black stout. Where is the nose? I get a little dark roasted malts but they are light compared to what I was expecting. Not only that but there is no sign of coffee. WTF is the only thing going through my head right now. What a let down but on the positive side of things at least it isn't skunked.

Taste is a step in the right direction. Hints of dark stone fruits mix with nice scorched malts and dark grains. A light molasses roast lingers in the aftertaste. Still a little on the thin side but not horrible.

This doesn't taste or smell like a double anything. It does have a nice smooth mouthfeel and a lovely bitterness that I can attribute to the coffee. The only downfall of that is the coffee flavors aren't really apparent just the residual bitterness. As a non coffee drinker I must express disappointment with this one.

Rather opaque save for a small gint of red after holding it up to several different lights within my arm distance. The color itself is more of a deep redish brown than black and the head is fluffy, creamy light brown. Aroma is jammed with coffee, meat roast, berries, smoke, leaves. nature, wood etc. A nice roasty treat on the nose. Taste-wise this is entertaining also. The coffee is certainly not hidden. In fact this might be too coffee-like than coffee stout-like but luckily I enjoy coffee. There is also a varitey of fruit flavors and some lactic qualities. This taste is fairly multidimensional with a rawness to it. Mouthfeel is good. Good full body but still quite fluid.

I like it overall but its raw indeed.

Shared tonight after about a year in the cellar, in to Double Bastard glasses.

Pours thick with a thin white head that didn't stick around long. Obviously, this was dark as they get. Smell of dark chocolate and fresh ground coffee. Wonderful! Taste was of dark roasted espresso beans and dark chocolate. Wonderful flavors that leaned straight to the coffee and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel was not as thick as the flavor and had a bittering aftertaste.

I enjoyed this beer a lot as a finishing the night beer. Wish I had more, would pair this with a nice desert.

22 0z. bomber > Fat snifter

Lookin' deep black, bubbly around the edges, showing off it's carboantion well. A clumpy, high-rising mocha stained head has moderate to slow dissipation with a bunch of sticky lacing everywhere. classic.

The aroma is really nice, right off, it reminds me of the beautiful KTG and Courage IRS with deep whiff's of baker's chocolate, mild and creamy, rich vanilla, peanutbutter brownies but also a spicey, herbal hop underneath all that malt stuff. A very well-rounded aroma, later, comes blackberries from the slightly fruity hops. Chocolate covered coffee beans, not a big coffee aroma really, actually pretty subtle.

AH, the flavor has much more of a coffee kick, not dark-roast but more medium, a rather smooth, subtle coffee, but very effective within the creamy malt complexity, which is pretty high. The herbal, bitter hop kick is very robust and up-front, the balance is very unique with this medium bodied malty feel, and crisp, fresh hops. A semi-bitter chocolate malt pops out with oats and a deeper, roastie coffee edge as the liquid rises in temperature. The 7% abv is hardly noticed, very well-hidden...maybe a bit too mellow for taste. not much warmth to be felt from this double stout.

The feel is a big medium body, not heavy, with a soft, long finish.

Back in 1998 this was my first ever "double" stout, The flavor had much more of a coffee kick with the Startbuck's coffee and it seemed like a real BEAST of a beer back then. seems a bit tame now, but It's one of Redhooks finest beers.

I decided to enjoy this one with the new Black Keys DVD tonight. First the beer review...

Pours a very dark brown, not entirely black as there are brown edges but it's close enough. Nice inch or so of off-white head. Retention is fair but lacing is good.

Aroma is sweet and roasty with coffee in the forefront.

Flavor is very well done with dark roasted coffee, mild chocolate, roasted malts, and a touch of bitterness from hops. Nice balance to it with just enough sweetness to balance the dark roasty character.

Mouthfeel is very good, not too heavy, medium plus body, good levels of carbonation, and friendly.

Drinkability is good too in that it's not too overbearing or heavy in alcohol. One can enjoy this beer from start to finish and feel good along the way.

One of the best examples of a coffee stout.

As for the Black Keys, rockin' as always!

A: black as can be, huge foamy mocha head (chunky, bubbly, and sticky). Great lace...a picture in a glass

S: burly malts and roasted coffee, with a dollop of sweet cream. So far so good!

T: rich roasted malts, dark coffee and a touch of mocha/chocolate sweetness. The roasted characteristics give way to a tinge of toasted nuttiness, or even a smokiness. I like this one...

M: The weakest part is the feel, not as heavy as you would think. Respectably delicate on the palate. Light carbonation keeps it from being super smooth. That smokiness comes around in the finish and I also want to say some meager hops in the mix...not to mention coffee

D: I like it, the overall coffee-beer thing is good and in well balance. This is to date, the best Redhook brew I have had and one of the better coffee brews. I could see having this after a late breakfast and as a fireplace sipper

Very decent single stout. Coffee aroma and taste, at a quite acceptable level of drinkability. Pours black with massive white head.Above average mouthfeel. First is bitterness, then malt, then coffee, add second helping and repeat. Very and decent coffee.

Beautiful creamy head with good retention and great lacing. Very dark but if held to the light yields a beautiful garnet hue.
Smells of coffee, and other roasted flavors.
Coffee, dark fruit maybe some molasses. Finishes with a roasted bitterness but the hops linger the longest.
A little thin but very smooth with good carbonation.
Very solid beer I will probably enjoy again in the future.

22oz bomber from RedHook's Blueline series claims to have been bottled on Oct 8, 2012. Served cold in a pint glass. Beer pours a rich dark brown, nearly black, and forms a thin head momentarily. Beer sits quite opaque in the glass. Aroma is similarly rich and smells of mocha. Sweet, not like candy, but definitely a treat.

Flavor-wise this beer is all about the coffee. Brewed coffee blends with coffee notes in the heavily roasted malts. But there's no mistaking this for a flavored beer, it's clearly a porter. Peak Organic Espresso Amber Ale comes to mind, though in porter form. The beer is balanced by a bitterness which seems to come from hops more than beans. Overall, this porter is a nice cup of coffee but as a beer it may get old. Still I give it high marks for great flavor and composition. Unfortunately I don't recall how it compares to the older non-Blueline (and non-Caffé Vita) db (Double Black) Red Hook.

It's not like me to dismiss a beer, but I'm going to do it in this case. Firstly because the beer itself just doesn't seem to shine in any way at all, and secondly, because of the specialty nature of this bottling it should be much better. Thirdly, with a connection between Starbucks and Redhook (however thin it may be), I think that the coffee flavor should be much more dominant.

It poured a typical appearance for a stout. Nice light tan head. Fairly good retention. Average lacing.

The aroma was somewhat roasty, but non-descript. I didn't really pick up coffee. The best I could say is that it was kind of like weak black coffee.

The aroma had me guessing, but the mouthfeel made me look at the bottle. "Double" black? It didn't appear to be double anything. It had a medium body with an average carbonation level.

The flavor really got me guessing. It seemed thin and lacking in flavor. It didn't seem "Imperial" or "Double", nor did it seem coffee-like. There was some dark malt acidity; but it wasn't particularly roasty either. It tasted more like coffee in the finish than it did in the mouth. I didn't find any hops, and I didn't find much malt. I was expecting at least deep caramel and nuttiness (as in a schwarzbier or Munich dunkel), but even that level of maltiness was missing. What I got was more like scorched sugar.

Overall, I thought it was OK to drink - it didn't taste bad - but there was nothing enticing about it. But there was nothing that satisfied me in the flavor or the aroma, and at that point there's no point in drinking it unless you're just looking for the alcohol. Perhaps a different label would help. Something a little less leading.
