Quite handsome dark brown with a peaky off-white head in the Saxo tall tulip. A rather light body with plenty of sparkle on the tongue. There is something watery yet oily about this. Smells of licorice and bread.

Dark scorched grains and plenty of pie spice, plus a pervasive sweet taste, pretty well covers it. Licorice taste is pretty strong. This gets bitter after a couple of sips and the aftertaste is plenty bitter. Dark malt that dries out in the aftertaste, in spite of the sugary sensation at first. A few sips is more than enough. The bitter burnt spice taste lingers unpleasantly.

I wish they would just call these kind of brews "Spiced Winter Ale." Pumpkin's got nothing to do with it. From the 22 oz bottle at Boulevard Liquors in San Diego.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a very dark brown color with a small tan colored head. The head fades rather fast, leaving behind a light level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is largest of a pumpkin smell mixed with some moderate spice aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg. Mixed with these aromas are some light maple syrup and caramel smells as well as a bit of a roasted malt and coffee aromas.

Taste – The taste begins with on the drier side with just a bit of a caramel taste. Upfront the bulk of the taste is dominated by a mix of pumpkin and roasted malt flavors with a decent showing of cinnamon. As the taste moves on the flavors become more spiced and roasted as other spices of ginger and nutmeg come to the tongue along with a lighter coffee taste. In the end some of the maple syrup that was detected in the nose is discernable on the tongue, but with the loss of much of the caramel that taste is still rather dry. In the end the mix of flavors ends up leaving a drier and lightly burnt spiced pumpkin puree flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the lighter and slightly thinner side with a carbonation level that was average. A thicker and creamier body would have been much nicer for the brew as it could have supported the blend of roast and pumpkin much better.

Overall – A rather dry pumpkin porter with a decent flavor. When looking for something not too sweet with a decent pumpkin and roasted flavor then this is a pretty nice choice.

Pours a very dark amber/brown with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates. Smells of molasses, roasted meat. Taste dominated by the dryness of this beer for me. Starts off with a hint of sweetness that is quickly pushed aside by strong roast flavors and assertive bitterness. Finishes dry with only a little lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.

Overall a decent, but not outstanding porter and little to no pumpkin taste or aroma that I could detect.
