Appearance has a light golden orange color supporting a thin dissipating head leaving nil lace. Smell of sweet caramel malt and light hop. Taste is light in the malt, but it is only 4.7% which could have used a softer hop to balance. Mouthfeel is a light medium with good carbonation. As what its for, a good session ale.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Golden amber with a thin white head. No lacing on the glass.

Smell: Hops, pine, and citrus notes.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium to light bodied. Taste of bitter pine/hops with a subtle citrus taste in the background.

Overall: Decent brew. I would have it again.

While a decent enough brew, Red Hook’s Audible Ale didn’t earn a place in my beer fridge.

I enjoy listening to Dan Patrick once in a while and have heard him talk about this collaboration beer. So when I saw it as part of a Red Hook mixed 12-pack priced for clearance at $10.99, I decided to give it and the other beers a shot.

I’m current on hunt to find really tasty beers with ABVs of 5% or less, so I went in with great hope for Audible and its 4.7%. But it let me down, in that regard. It doesn’t hold a candle to these <5% brews:
Deschutes’ River Ale (4.0%)
Green Flash’s Saison Diego (4.2%)
Sierra Nevada’s Nooner Session IPA (4.8%)
Stone’s Levitation Ale (4.4%, but it costs too darn much!)

So, Audible Ale won’t have a place in my beer fridge.

But I could see it as a way of introducing the craft category to fuzzy-yellow drinking sports fans. Compared to those mass lagers, Audible pours a nicer, richer golden color. And both the nose and taste show more malt than a standard lager. The ale yeast gives it a deeper flavor, and it has bit more hop bite (though only 22 IBUs).

12oz custom Redhook bottle
A) Pours with a thin, white head that has great retention. Clear golden-bronze body.
S) Fresh orange. Bright floral notes.
T) Nutty undertones. Mellow hop bite from the beginning.
M) Crisp. Fizzy. Medium-light body. Finishes a bit thin, dry and chalky.
O) An okay beer. Looks great on the pour but the taste profile and mouthfeel are weak.
