Poured from a bottle into a mug, the beer is a very dark brown coloring with ruby highlights, and a thin, filmy, sparse, surface coating of light tan head. Aromas of heavily roasted pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, molasses, and caramel. Pretty rich nose, but subtle. Flavors are roasted and rich pumpkin forward, with a subtle spice blend to follow. Fairly sweet blend, but it disappears quickly, and leans more to a bitter roasted characteristic in the aftertaste. Sugary sweet, and cloying overall. Oily body. The finish is richly sweet, like pumpkin bread. This beer isn't bad, but it's a bit all over the place.

I wouldn't consider this a porter or a pumpkin beer. It's just a nice easy-drinking tasteful beer. subtle taste of pumpkin, some smoke, and the nice smooth porter characteristics. It's a little flat like a cask ale. all said I think it's a great fall beer. I will enjoy this much more in October.

12 oz bottle.
Dark, opaque, red-brown body with a decent head.
Overly spiced ale. good bitter/sweet balance. Pumpkin pie spices dominate and mask the malt base.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, dark black, almost opaque color, with a quarter of a finger of oatmeal-colored head that quickly dissolved into an extremely thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed wispy clouds that gathered in the center of the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very roasty and malty, like freshly baked dark bread. I also get notes of pumpkin pie spices such as all-spice, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg; however, I get next to nothing in the way of hops.

Taste: Very roasty up front, like a porter should. Lots of roasted malt and freshly baked dark bread. However, unlike the aroma, there’s practically no flavors of pumpkin or pumpkin pie spices, which is disappointing. There is a decent amount of sweetness after the initial roasted flavors fall away, but not much in the way of pumpkin or pumpkin pie spices, more like a caramel-like sweetness. Also, there’s not much in the way of hops either.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, with almost no carbonation to speak of. With an ABV of 5.8%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a pretty good porter, but as a pumpkin flavored beer goes, it’s pretty thin. Next year I think that I’ll pass on it.

It needs more pumpkin, Jack! This sounds so good on the bottle but it's lacking in the pumpkin department in both the nose and taste. Warm the flavors become more pronounced, definitely get the nutmeg and maple and some pumpkin. Cold, good luck getting more than a slightly sweet light porter. Overall, despite not living up to the description it's still quite drinkable. Not something I'd see myself buying maybe, but love to see at a fall party.

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle into a snifter.

Pitch black in color with a cream-colored head that's considerably sparse---maybe a sixteenth of an inch of head. Lac is present but again, not entirely abundant.

The smell is immediately pumpkin, then spice, hints of bubblegum, and some chocolate. These all transfer over to the taste, but other flavors emerge as well, particularly nutmeg and coffee.

The beer has some bite to it because of the spices and is quaffable. There's something about the beer that I enjoy but I can't quite place my finger on what. It's a good beer ultimately, something I'd give a run next fall as well.
