750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep brown body. Medium khaki head. Thick collar.

Smell - Vanilla aroma. It's got a weird tequila aroma, which is redundant. Deep caramel. Slight oakiness.

Taste - Less intense on the tequila, but it's there. Lots of vanilla and oak. Deep caramel. Some deeper malts. Nutty flavors. A little milk chocolate. Astringent finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. Well carbonated.

Overall - I can't get past the tequila barrel.

Buckeyeboy provided this gem tonight... Thanks Jeremy! Pours dark brown with a thin short lasting dark tan head.. decent enough lacing. The aroma is dark malt with a good spicy yeasty phenolic note that combines well with the oak and residual tequila. I doubt my sniffer is good enough to ever identify this as tequila without coaxing, but I dig it nonetheless. Flavor really needs warmth to bloom.. Again, the tequila is there, but doesn't really get too big, I would appreciate a heavier hand personally.. with warmth, raisin and oak come out.. Agave? I guess. Surprised there is carbonation.

Interesting... Okay... Not really the best beer for a "tasting" there is a lot going on, but it is all really pretty light and never out in the open, this is a "thinker"... but honestly, it is only okay.

750 mL bottle poured into nonic pint glass

A: The brew is reddish-brown in color, opaque, as a gentle pour yields almost no suds. Doesn't look as viscous as I thought it might be.

S: The nose is somewhat muted, with hints of carob and ripe fruit first noted. Suggestions of squaw bread surround the bouquet, with a doughy aspect. I'm not sure if it's that the aromas are subdued or just that the alcohol is well-masked, but there are faint hints of booze at the edge of bouquet.

T: Nothing muted on the palate, though. At first I thought it tasted like a spiced quad, with notes of ripe fruit and rum-raisin at the front, nutmeg as well. AS the sip progresses, a quad's fruity esters are instead hoppy astringency and phenols. Booze does pop up at the back of the sip but not as much as expected. Bitter and sweet aspects are well aligned for the ABV; everything is dialed in as the sip finishes long, with touches of hops and phenols lingering between sips.

M: One of the lighter-bodied ales I've had in this ABV range. I think the dark opacity throws off perceptions.

I was recently up in Sea-town for a high school reunion...popped into Bottleworks as I always do when I'm up there. Nice to see another local rock star collaborating with Seattle's beer scene (when I moved from Seattle to San Diego, craft beer was a bigger deal up there than down here). A nice homage to the cozy little bottleshop, with a style that's hard to pin down but with a complex flavor-profile that's easy to drink.
