Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Each time a barrel is filled, a measure of liquid seeps into the oak and is lost for good.This striking Strong Ale is brewed with copious amounts of Caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied bourbon or brandy barrels. The beer spends a year in oak before it is packaged for release.

This was poured at 59 degrees into a snifter.

It poured black with a finger of head. The first smell was amazing. Completely took me off guard. Overwhelming sweet smells of brandy, caramel, prunes, and liquor.

Taste did not disappoint. Strong hints of caramel, port, brandy, and dark fruit. Absolutely amazing.

Overall, this is an amazing beer. It's one of my favorites, if not my favorite. I picked up a couple of extras, so I look forward to trying this again in a year or so.

2008 vintage 375ml bottle. Pours into my glass a deep dark rich brown with a inch of creamy bubbly light tan head on top as well. The cork popped quite loudly here and I was glad I had a glass nearby! Aromas start with a deep, rich roasted maltiness with raisins, figs, dark fruit, caramel and molasses all in play. Enticing and flowing trails of vanilla and bright, woody oak accents. Big bourbon wafts up into the nose.

First sip brings a lush, somewhat sweet rich maltiness that is lightly roasted. Notes of raisins, cocoa, brown sugar and caramelized sugars. Vibrant vanilla flavors cavort with hints of dark fruits. As it flows down woody oak flavors kiss the palate and make me envision barrels of this amazing beer lying patiently at wait in the Lost Abbey brewery waiting for just the right moment to be released from its wooden confinement. Smooth bourbon shines through on the finish and the alcohol is nearly non-existent here. A deeply complex and insanely tasty brew.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and has somewhat of a creaminess to it as well. This is quite carbonated and personally I think the carbonation is a little overdone here. Overall though, it's intensely complex, warming and contemplative. Definitely a sipper, but one I could sip all night. An amazing beer that I would recommend any day of the week!

HUGE thanks to Adam for sending me this one. Flat out phenomenal beer. Thank you.

Appearance: It pours a very dark mahogany color. There's a hint of red peaking around the edges. Carbonation is extremely active and yields a nearly four finger deep head that's mocha brown in color. It was extremely slow to dissipate and left an excellent coat of lace on the glass.

Smell: This is a very unique and excellent aroma. It's very malty and features a refined bourbon smell. The bourbon appears to be perfectly blended and the nose suggests it plays a more subtle, complementary role rather than simply overwhelming the other scents and flavors. This is my preference for the style and the aroma has created extremely high expectations. There are some light spicy notes as well as a distinct toffee aroma. It certainly has an oak/wood chip scent. Light vanilla and dark fruit round it out.

Taste: With the nose raising my expectations even further, the flavor delivers and then some. Wow! This is one hell of a fine tasting beer. It's malty and sweet up front. It has a unique toffee flavor that distinguishes it a little from other releases of this style. The bourbon flavor emerges and is a near carbon copy of the nose. It's extremely well blended and complementary in nature. Vanilla and light spice flavors really open it up. It's very complex and tasty. Oak, light dark fruit, and very faint roasted coffee flavors emerge on the tail. Finishes sweet with a slight alcohol warming.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's medium bodied. Feels a little thinner than I prefer. This would be an absolute knockout if the feel were just a little smoother. It just lacks that ultra-creamy smooth feel that I was hoping for. Carbonation is high and active, but doesn't negate the feel. Drinkability is extremely high. At 12%, it's very strong. But, alcohol is barely noticeable and it's difficult to savor. It's just too damn tasty.

I had high expectations for this one and they've actually been exceeded. It's hard to find any fault in this beer. My one small criticism is that it needs to be a tad thicker and have the feel smoothed out a little. Nevertheless, Lost Abbey has crafted a world class beer with this one. You must find it...somehow, someway.

WTF! is all I can say as the cork shoots out of the bottle almost breaking the light at the top of my ceiling. I cant say that I was not warned though.

Crazy carbonation flows a four finger rich tan head over the top of the glass. Body is of the blackest brown in color. Nose is delecious with toffee, molases and lovely oak infused bourbon. Waves of lace are left as the head fades. A mix of creamy carbonation carries carmalized richness into the mouth with first sip. Tasty buttered rum and toffee tones meet with lots of sweet dark fruit on the palate. Alchol tones are very well hidden except for the ways the flavors properly bring them out. This beer drinks better and smooths as it warms. Mouthfeel is a bit thick and chorolately like a bourbon truffel. Superbly drinkable.

A: Pours from a 350ml bottle, and man, it's a gusher. Even out of the fridge, it still flows freely from the bottle. A steady pour kept it under control, but still yielded three fingers of cream-colored, bubbly foam. Body is almost black, with no light coming through. Held up to a light, a hint of red is around the edge.

S: Lots of dark fruit in the nose, some wood, some vanilla, a shade of bourbon, bread and dough, even a hint of chocolate perhaps. Fantastic.

T: This brew is most certainly not overrated. The taste is incredibly complex. Dark fruits, big caramel malt, brown sugar, molasses, bourbon, oak, vanilla, chocolate, and more all combine into a wonderful burst of flavor. I don't even know how to begin to describe it. Rich and strong, but delicious.

M: Smooth and viscous, with a bit of heat from the alcohol coming through.

D: While it is certainly not a session ale, it's a fantastic brew overall. Wish it was brewed more frequently and easier to get, but I'm just happy I got to try it once.

2008 Release, received in trade from aromatorio and OldSock. Thanks a bunch for a chance to try these brews! Poured into my Duvel tulip

A: The cork comes off with a resounding pop and into my glass, this brew goes! Deep reddish brown with a gorgeous 3-finger latte-colored head. Plenty of lace too.

S: Deliciously complex. This one starts off with a moderate bourbon note with a solid oak note. The oak is fairly strong and makes me think it was rather fresh. Underneath lies a hint of vanilla and a complex malt profile with figs and prunes. There's a hint of tobacco too. Very, very good - very well balanced

T: Starts off a complex mixture of bourbon, oak, brown sugar, dried figs and apricots. Mildly tannic. Medium bodied but dries up incredibly on the finish with some alcohol heat.

M: Excellent - great carbonation and a wonderfully dry finish

D: I'm savoring this one immensely and for the ABV, I really have to hold myself back

Drinking my last bottle of this batch (2008), and I have to say that it hasn't changed too much. Still very bourbon-forward up front with some vanilla and coconut working brilliantly with the tobacco and dark fruit. The booze has died down a touch, but good god, this is a brilliant beer! Bravo, Tomme!

Holy cow! I can’t even begin to follow CharlesDarwin’s review. There nothing left to cover! So, I’ll just say that this is a huge, complex, delicious Barley Wine. If you hopheads that like your American BWs to be 1st cousin to an I2PA could pull yourselves away for one moment and give this stuff a whirl….

Yes, it’s worth the price.

This poured mahogany in color with a creamy head. The nose was nicely complex with scents of roasted malts, vanilla, chocolate, dark fruit and a slight herbalness. The palate is similarly complex and medium to full-bodied with great richness and balance. There is plenty of carbonation to keep this deep beer fresh. Aging should allow this to mellow out a bit and be potentially perfect for my palate.

what a great beer. What a rollercoaster of an experience. Initial carbonation was just short of a gusher but still it took forever for the foam to settle into a drinkable state. That nit pick aside, this is a phenomenally balanced robust, soft, deceptive, satisfying beer.

The price of entry is sinful but the result is decadent! I'm glad I took a leap of faith and bought this one. Oh, one last sad note - at 375ml's this one is over all too fast.

It was carbonated....Dark brown in color with a tan head. Aroma: Bourbon, molasses, dark fruits, and vanilla. Taste: alot of molasses, bourbon, chocolate, dark fruits, oak and vanilla. Body is big but the beer is actually very smooth. Alcohol is moderate in the finish. I've been wanting to try this for a long time...with carbonation that is, and it did not disappoint...

I want this beer brought up on charges of attempted murder. As I was preparing to open the beer I got barely two twists off on the cage and it struck. The cork blew out of the bottle breaking the cage on the way. If my face had been in the way I would have been immediately killed.

A: Dark brown with a nice mocha head.

S: Bourbon first and foremost. Brown sugar, plum, and a touch of raisin follow. Slight must basement character.

T: SUPER SMOOTH. This has aged beautifully. On tap initially it had too much bourbon but it seems to smoothed out considerably and lost the heat. The bourbon is only there for flavor now and doesn't burn at all. Nice malty/sugary sweetness with dark fruits. More fruit in the nose than the flavor though.

M: Super smooth. Butter.

D: Why did Lost Abbey go from 750's to 375's? Those cheap bastards.

12.7 oz. bottle originally purchased in the San Diego area and shipped back to D.C. (thanks, John Serra!), 2012 vintage, poured into my Rogue chalice, drank 9/26/13 over several hours (nice sipping distractor from the monotony of bottling homebrew):

A: 3/3 - ruby red-to-dark brown depending on the lighting, minimal clarity, pours into a subtle glass lacing (to be expected for a high ABVer)

S: 11/12 - tobacco, leather, rum...barrel-aged bomb that's 2 Legit 2 Quit!

T: 18/20 - on the anterior tongue, the rich bourbon complexity hits like heavyweight; in the middle of the mouth, the flavors continue to envelope with a rich sugar complexity; bourbon-notes continuing to linger until the finis where the booze hits big time too

M: 4/5 - moderate-to-high bodied; appropriate carbonation; booze supercoats the tongue

O: 9/10 - another winner from The Lost Abbey; an impressively complex bourbon-barreled aged brown that leaves me clamoring for another bottle (if you're reading Dr. Serra...?!?)

350 ml bottle from a trade with ralflord. Chilled down to try reduce the chance of a gusher but to no avail. Almost took my head off and my cat ran cover. Quickly poured into Duvel tulip glass. Left almost four inches of soapy brown head that retreated very slowly. Dark ruby in color. Lovely webbing and lace stayed through the whole experience. Smells of vanilla and sweet candy.

Taste: Simply amamzing. Extremely complex notes of vanilla, bourbon, oak and sweet figs. Twinge of hops in the background but the sweetness and oak overpowers and is an amazing show stopper. The alcohol is present, but not harsh - wamrs the core. Body is slick and smooth with a medium-dry finish. I thought the carbonation would detract from this brew but adds to complexity instead.

Drinkability is somewhat average due to gusher and high alcohol but since it is so dang smooth I want another. My bottle went way to quick and will be seeking out more.

Flat Abbey is officially dead, this cork shot out of the bottle with a huge burst of sound. What a great experience, dark almost black burgundy amber body with a light tan head filling my glass. Aroma is straight up bourbon vanilla/oak/charred wood you name it straight up bourbon barrel aging effects. Served at 50-55 degrees, this beer has sweet bourbon notes hidden fruit, plum/alcohol/raisin notes. But a dominant Kentucky bourbon barrel aged beer is perfect for Fat Tuesday, the alcohol isn't nearly as hot as the nose would entail. There's also hints of molasses and other burnt sugars along the way. The woody character on the palate carries each sip, to the bourbon drinker this beer would be a god send, and I do believe it deserves the hype I'm just not a huge bourbon drinker so this wouldn't be my desert Island beer. However, I appreciate the flavors so much that I'm impressed by the amount of bourbon I'm able to pick up, mouthfeel is oily intense and lingering between sips but complex enough and not just straight bourbon barrel aging. I had deliverance on tap and believe me I love it but they are apples and oranges both excellent in their own right I'm amazed at the mellow carbonation on the palate and the smoothness between sips, this definitely deserves the title Angel's Share.

Draft at Gourmet Haus Staudt.

The beer flows from the tap with the color and viscosity of maple syrup. A two finger head tops it initially, which settles to a frothy collar. Swirling the beer coats the glass in oily legs and revives the head to a small cap.

It has an intense aroma, rich and alcoholic. Caramelized malts and bourbon lie at the forefront, but it exhibits notes of vanilla and oatmeal raisin cookie, earth and oak, vinous fruits; it's hard to pull the nose away and take a sip. Sharp alcohol is evident as well, stinging the nostrils with each whiff.

Caramel flavors almost overwhelm the tongue initially. It's hot, boozy, rich, sweet, absolutely decadent and delicious. Full-bodied, nearly syrupy on the palate, somehow this is immensely drinkable. Strong tannins dry the palate, and so does the sharp alcohol, balancing the initial richness. It finishes almost dry, with lingering flavors of oak, leather, pipe tobacco and just a bit of lingering toffee. Such an outstanding beer, it's hard to put down despite the high alcohol and intense character.

Sampled at the Sixth Annual Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer. Listed as the 2006 vintage.

A - Rich, deep brown color with a one-finger mocha head and a tiny bit of carbonation. A handsome brew.

S - Tons of stuff going on here - bourbon, coffee, licorice, caramel, malt, chocolate, oak, dark fruit, and perhaps even some apricot in there. Pretty incredible!

T - Bourbon nose with a little kick, then mellows into the sweeter malt and caramel flavors. I don't get the same complexity on taste as I do with the smell, which is a touch disappointing.

M - Lighter than I expected - carbonation tingles the back of the throat, complementing the bourbon nicely. Felt a tiny bit thin.

D - Easier to drink than Bourbon County Stout, but with the same depth of flavors and intensity. I kept going back to this one during the tasting for more.

A fantastic brew - can't wait to try the brandy version.

Glass: 12 oz snifter

Appearance: pours murky and muddy with a beige head that nearly completely fades in almost no time at all. No lacing.

Smell: heavy on roasted malt, noticeable sweetness with hints of vanilla, bourbon, barrel wood, and just a modicum of coconut.

Taste: very similar to the nose. Heavy on roasted malts, vanilla, bourbon, some coconut, and lingering wood.

Mouthfeel: lower in carbonation, but manages to be a bit crisp.

Overall: not the most aesthetically pleasing pour, but all other factors trump its underwhelming appearance. After letting this beer warm up a few minutes, I'm tempted to say this is the most delicious beer I've tasted in quite some time.

Bottle sampled at Lost Abbey for RBSG 08. Poured into a wine glass. Deep brown color with lots of cocoa foam and visible sediment. Aromas of bourbon and chewy sweet malts. Flavor is maple syrup/brown sugar with the obvious rich bourbon note. Alcohol is extremely well-hidden. Sticky mouthfeel makes the finish very long. Drinkability is ridiculous for 12.5%.

Bottle to a snifter.

A: Dark, dark brown to black color. Not much carbonation to see, looks very viscous and tasty.

S: Lots of Bourbon burn up front, dark fruit, prunes, grain alcohol, oak, and also this candy-like sweetness. Smells very tasty to a big beer guy like me.

T: Wow, awesome. Lots going on here. Bourbon influenced huge malt beer with dark fruit, confection sugar, alcohol burn, leather, oak, and lots of other flavors that are hard to pinpont but add to a huge complex brew. Great to a hypotaster like me.

M: Viscous as it looked, but in a medium heavy way, not an overpowerly creamy way. Just enough carbonation for a beer like this IMO.

D: Tastes really great, but would be tough to get by a bottle (even 375) without help! Awesome. I continually will be trying to get my hands on this and all the variations of it.

Opaque mahogany with no highlights whatsoever, despite bright morning sunshine behind the snifter. The pale caramel colored crown filled most of the glass on the pour, indicating plenty of carbonation. The lightly creamy foam is melting in fine fashion, leaving a delicate collar of lace in the process. The second pour looks even better than the first.

The outstanding aroma is redolent of dark chocolate-covered caramels, bourbon whiskey, oily coconut shavings and loads of vanilla and toasted oak. If things open up a little more with warming, a perfect score isn't out of the question.

Once I tasted how great the Brandy Barrel-Aged version was, I knew the Bourbon Barrel-Aged brew would be something special as well. Especially since bourbon is my favorite spirit (along with single malt Scotch whiskey). Too bad there's only 375 ml in this bottle because I could sip this beauty all day and half the night, never tiring of attempting to appreciate its complexities.

First of all, the bourbon character is front and center. That said, the base beer comes through loud and clear. A perfect amount of time in the barrels is the obvious reason why those flavors are so well-balanced and so well-integrated. Warming is definitely making a bold beer even bolder... and even better.

The insanely complex flavor profile is made up of gooey caramels dipped in bittersweet chocolate, raisins and figs soaked in Kentucky's finest, sticky dates, sweetened coconut and a generous splash of vanilla. There's also a fair amount of bitterness that keeps the sweetness from running roughshod. As in all great high-ABV beer, alcohol adds power, intensity and a pleasantly spreading warmth.

There were slightly too many bubbles early, and there are exactly the right amount now, 30 minutes after cork extraction. More full and more sticky would have been fine, but I'm more than okay with the lightly supple silkiness that greets my every sip.

The Angel's Share (Bourbon Barrel) is yet one more amazing ale in a long line of amazing ales from The Lost Abbey. Here's hoping that Tomme gets the kinks worked out and is able to ensure that all future releases are properly bubbled, like this one. Even though my glass is now sadly empty, this was a hell of a ride that I can't wait to take again.

2010 375ml bottle. Removed the cage. Cork came out fairly easily but didn't release much of a pop.

Poured into a Lost Abbey Patron Sinner wine glass. Very dark brown, almost black fluid with dark mahogany highlights. No head formed despite a fairly aggressive pour. However, some light tan cappuccino lacing forms around the outside with some swirling of the glass. Still, I'd like some head please!

The smell is a great balance of a deep malty, caramelly backbone, with touches of oak and significant bourbon notes. Sauteed vanilla bean as well.

The taste is exquisite, and I don't use that term lightly. This beer truly hits on all cylinders with the flavor. If I could give it a higher score than 5 right here, I would. The taste is like a deliciously rich French dessert. Deep caramel, cocoa, almost tiramisu-like flavor coupled with incredibly balanced oak and bourbon notes. Vanilla comes through a bit and even some rich fatty cream is implied. The finish is really amazing though with a slight bitterness and drying effect that keeps the beer from being too cloying.

The mouthfeel is silky smooth and medium full. The carbonation is very subdued and almost nonexistent, but it doesn't really bother me that much. I don't think the beer is ruined by no carbonation but it would benefit from more carbonation. A rich dessert beer like this shouldn't be all spritzy anyway.

Overall, this beer is very, very good and should be hailed as a great blend. I want to give it a 5 in this category but find it hard based on the lower scores in appearance and mouthfeel which stem from the lack of carbonation.

Finally, a Lost Abbey beer that lives up to its billing.

The beer pours with a cola-like russet brown/red color with slight haze. Light carbonation allows a lace of foam to settle and blanket the beer. Light on lacing but brandy-like with the legs.

Irresistable aromas of heavy malts, cotton-candy sweetness, sweet rums and brandy alcohols, dried fruits of currants, plumbs, dates, prunes, grapes, raisons, apples, and berries. Hops are low and may take on an herbal tone that gets lost in the woodsy oak and nutty character.

Flavors are more balanced between the sweet malts, fruits, and alcohols; and the bitter and tannin rich woods and hop bitterness. Still has all the right ingredients but the bourbon flavor and oak character interfere with the delicate sweetness more in taste than in aroma.

Rich and rounded up front without thickness or heaviness. Tanin astringency helps to dry out the beer going into the finish; maybe too much. Powdery and bitter late.

It's obvious to see why this is among the world's best beers. If the rest of the beer lived up to that aroma, we'd be talking flawless here.

Poured from 375mL bottle into a tulip. This is the 2010 version clocking in at 12.5% ABV. Might be young yet, but I can't wait.

Appearance: extremely dark non-translucent brown hue with a finger of tan head which dissipates rapidly. A strong showing for a strong ale.

Smell: in a word: rich. Heady malt with dark and dried fruits, blackcurrant and raisin and date; a rich woodiness which is both distinct and highly complementary; an alcohol burn in my nose which is either part of the bourbon aging or simply on the beer's own copious merits. I was wondering whether this beer would live up to the hype (and price), and if the smell is any indication it well and truly has.

Taste: rich and warm; chocolate, the aforementioned fruits and a hint of the bourbon character are all in place. The wood has subsided a bit from the aroma, but there's a faint mustiness which has replaced it to good effect. Bitterness is there, but is low for the mega malt flavors; hop flavor is almost indiscernible to me. Still, what an incredible beer.

Mouthfeel: thick body; incredibly silky and smooth on the palate. Low carbonation but the consistency and body make it creamy nonetheless; this is just delightful.

Drinkability: I could and would drink this all night if possible. It's not drinkable in the swillable sense, but it is certainly so in that I would gladly quaff another right after this one.

Consumed on tap at Stone on 11/12/2009 and poured into a snifter. The beer is dark brown, nearly black with a two finger light brown head and good retention.

The nose blows me away. A wonderful balance is struck between bourbon, brown sugar, and vanilla. Oak notes are evident, as well as alcohol heat that compliments the other characteristics. I'm salivating from the bourbon in the nose. This is easily one of my favorite bourbon barrel barleywines.

The flavor is hot, but pleasant. Brown sugar, vanilla, and prominent bourbon are all present. A low level of sweetness is noticeable, as well as barrel tannins. Notes of booze soaked dates are present, and I detect figs. Simply delicious stuff. The bourbon character is fantastic.

On tap, the carbonation is spot on, and the mouthfeel is viscous, silky, and smooth. Unbelievable stuff, it's a real shame about the 2009 bottles.
