375ml bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a brilliantly clear amber body with a finger of off white head.

S: Tons of red wine aroma here. Behind the wine, I get quite a bit of sour cherry and plums. I also get a hint of acetic acid aroma and raisins.

T: Much more sour than I was expecting. Lots of sour cherry again upfront, but now there is some acetic acid to go with it. I get plum that adds to the fruitiness. Red wine is still there, but not as much as in the aroma.

M: On the thick side with low carbonation.

O: Not bad. Fairly complex with a nice sour cherry flavor and a nice sourness. I prefer my AWAs a bit cleaner, but this is certainly above average.

Dark ruby and brown with no head and very little visible carbonation. This looks lifeless, limp, and oily in the glass.

Strong acidic aroma throughout, mild oak presence, along with lots of dried cherry and currant aromas.

This beer is delicious. This is an incredibly well balanced combination of strong acidic sourness, sweet and tart cherries, dates, and currants, along with a nicely balanced though present earthy barnyard funk character. Complete.

Medium bodied and very low in carbonation. While not too distracting, I wish it had at least a touch more carbonation.

Though lacking in appearance and body, this is one fabulous sour. I would be more than happy to drink this again and again.

Taken from notes. Still playing catch up. Shared by Alex at the Library Alehouse the day after finishing law school.

Appearance – Pours a brown/red with a half finger of off white head that dissipates quickly.

Smell – Vinous grapes, dark sweet cherries, oak, slight funk, and spices.

Taste – The flavor is not as tart/sour as I was hoping. While there are some vinous notes and slight barnyard funk, the majority of the flavors consist of darker fruits and sweet malty notes. As the beer warms the oak becomes a bit more prominent.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, lower carbonation.

Overall – An interesting beer that I wish had a bit more sourness to it. Glad to try it.

If you are not a red wine drinker, you will probably not be a huge fan of this beer. However, ig you are a fan of red wine (Like I am) you will probably fall in love with it.

Pours out a hazy, brown "muddy water" color. Aroma is full of red wine and just a hint of malty sweetness.

I started drinking a little colder that recommended (Because I'm not patient enough to wait) and the red wine character was "BOOM" very much in your face. As the beer warms up, the red wine character is not as flavor forward, but you can still there it's there. The malt and a hint of vanilla becomes more noticable on the front of the tongue.

Finishes off a bit on the dry side, but doesn't have a heavy mouthfeel and doesn't leave you with that cottonmouth feeling that some red wines can leave. Very enjoyable sipper at 8%ABV

I got this one from a nice in-person trade from billab914. Thanks man!

A: Reddish-brown, cloudy, and with a completely flat disposition. A "Lost Abbey" brew flat... imagine that..

S: Sour for sure, but with a good bit of brown sugary maltiness that made this one, to me, more of an Aude Bruin.

T: I got the red wine barrel contribution right away. Bonesuckingly dry, nutty (almonds), and with a mild dessert quality that's pretty cool (maybe that's the vanilla).

M: In dying need of some suds, but this one certainly packs a punch in the sour category. However, I didn't get much vinegar here... more like a sour red wine, with a grainy texture.

O: I don't know how much this one costs because I got it in a trade. Being that as it may, I think this brew is really good.

Appearance: Brown-copper pour with a touch of red, not much head

Smell: Very vineous, although a bit muddled. Oak, cabernet sauvignon and some prunes and berries.

Taste: Very muddled, the red wine dominates. I didn't finish the glass and the next day I checked and there was over an inch of sediment, probably some of the problem.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, perhaps a touch under carbonated

Overall: Wasn't too impressed with this one.

A: The pour is a lightly hazed dark amber color with a couple fingers of off-white head.

S: Light vinegar notes with some red wine and sour cherries. There's just a bit of oak along with a slight malt sweetness, sort of like an oud bruin/Flanders red. A touch of grass and straw, as well.

T: The little bit of malt sweetness is the first thing on the tongue. Lightly acetic with some notes of cherries and raisins along with red wine and a bit of balsamic vinegar. Just a hint of oak.

M: Medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation.

O: Could have used a bit more tartness, but still a nice sour beer.

App- Well it has the look of a Lost Abbey beer. It was that unique muddled light brown. No head or maybe a touch of bubbles presented. No cling. Just seems more like a wild ale to me. Not a BA Dubbel.

Smell- It retains a bit of the Dubbel notes. A bit of the yeast is there with that effervescent bubble note. Add to that a tartness and a bit of tannic like wine with some dark grapes.

Taste- Again, tastes just like a LA beer. Has a clean and simple profile with the base beer retaining most of the flavors and the barrels just adding a note of acidity and some complexities with a little tannin and oak.

Mouth- Medium bodied and medium carbonated. Finishes just like a red wine to me. A bit dry a bit tannic.

Drink- A nice beer to say the least. The barrels add a nice touch to a good lineup beer. I'd like a whole bottle to sit with and see how flavors envelope.

Enjoyed on 7/4/11 reviewed from notes:

Popped the cork and lo and behold, there is carbonation.

A: Pours a reddish brown with a half finger of head that dissipate slowly.

S: Lots of tart on the nose. Reminds me of a consecration aroma but not as strong.

T: Some brown sugar and fruit taste in the front. Next the tart tang from the wine barrels.

M: Very light/oily feel. Very little carb on the tongue.

O: Glad I grabbed this one from the release. A very enjoyable beer amongst a lot of more disappointing beers from LA recently.

Appearance - Pours a carmel-red with only a few tan bubbles forming around the edges.

Smell - Red wine, grapes, oak.

Pours rust brown with orange edges. Sour, acidic nose, light chocolate, typical tight Lost Abbey brett. Kevin compared this to Oer Faute -- "That's fucking interesting." Better than Veritas 003 (which is a mess at this age), much worse than Brouwers 09. Comaprable in quality to Sinners 09 but far less malty and oily. Really don't remember much of this otherwise. Sorry about this review, guys.

Big thanks to billab914 for including this as an extra.

A: Pours a semi-hazy caramel brown with a pretty decent off-white head. Hey, we have carbonation!

S: Smells very vinous, like red wine, as well as some tart funkiness and a little bit of sweet dark malt in there as well in the background.

T: The red wine and the sourness from the smell really carry over into the taste, and are the most prominent flavors. There's also a good amount of vinegar in the finish. It tastes very similar to an oud bruin. I haven't had the base beer, Lost & Found, but there doesn't seem to be much of the dubbel flavor remaining. I wish there was a little more of the base beer's flavor here, I think the added complexity it would bring would be huge.

M: Medium-full bodied, very smooth and then a tingly finish.

O: This is a pretty tasty sour, but it's somewhat one-dimensional in its flavor. It ends tasting like a less complex, more vinegary Consecration.

Bottle poured into a snifter. I had this one side by side with Lost and Found.

Brown, hazy, small head on top. Based on smell you can tell that this has spent time in a barrel compared to the Lost and Found. Hints of red wine, some vinous sour notes. Some dark fruit aroma as well.

The taste is fantastic. A good sour bite, nice red wine notes, some hints of dark fruit, some cherries, some oaky barrel flavors.

medium bodied with a light carbonation

I really enjoyed this beer. Nice amount of sourness, the barrel aging really shines. Much better than he base version which is rather bland. I would love to get more of this.

Thanks to jedwards for breaking this one out at our Lost Abbey tasting. Served in a Sinners tulip. Pours the color of cider or caramel with a hazy clarity. No head and only a few residual spots of lacing present after each tilt. Nose is vinous and acidic with a toasted oak character. Taste is slightly vinegary, a little oaky and some residual vanilla notes are expressed at the finish. Moutfeel is light in body with a lively carbonation, some acidity and a dry finish. An interesting brew, but not sure why it's classified as a dubbel. This is an extremely tart beer; so much so that it is difficult to tease out all the flavors. Those nose in and of itself, makes it worth the purchase price.

had been waiting forever to try this one, and really glad to have landed a bottle. served around cellar temp and poured into a pint a snifter, this one was consumed as i closed out my night tonight.

pours a wonderful light brown with reddish hues abounding around the outsides of the glass. a smooth light creamy head of tan raises up to the top of the glass and levels off very nicely.

aroma is nice and well rounded. deep dark fruit notes, plums, figs, lots of earthy and bready notes. big, big profile here and dark. seems like every but the kitchen sink as it comes up to room temperature. great sweet malts and a nice touch of spice lie in the back and give it a nice spike as it hits the taste bus. rich and smooth feel, huge for a dubbel and a really big plum and fig flavor drop on the palate. rounding it off with sugary notes and grape like vinous properties.

overall everything i expected and more. this was one of the finer ales i have had from lost abbey, really a winner.

Thanks to Phil for bringing this one.

A: Ruby colored hazy look. A Ring of small head and some highlights of orange and gold.

S: Great aroma of deep dark cherry, raisin, cinnamon, oak, and citrus bursts which I enjoyed. Excellent.

T: An awesome taste with the smell and extra malty notes like a thick malt shake in the back. Awesome cherry and raspberry up front, red wine in the middle, and lingering ginger and cinnamon adding into the puckering tartness and acidic flavor.

M: Very sour with a semi sweet front, A little astringent in it's sourness even!

O: A really liked this, but the puckering qualities really start to wear on me. A nice one to share.

Pours slick with minimal carbonation, a minimal head forms leaving nice delicate lacing. Body is murky amber with yeast chunks, tan head. Smell is cherries, vinegar and funk, caramel and malt. Taste is vinegar, blue cheese, sour cherries dominate, lemon with a nice astringent bite. Slight oak, and honey flavors. Carbonation is low and prickly, mouthfeel is off slick and body is medium. Overall a good beer, id like more cherries, but this works for me. Wish I had more!

Poured in a Lost Abbey tulip because why the hell not. Darker, slightly murky brown with a bit of tan head and some red hues.

Smell of this one is really interesting with a nice red wine thing going on with some sourish grapes. Slight oak presence. Taste is not as exciting as the smell, but it was not bad just a milder version of the aroma with some alcohol.

Ample carbonation, but the tannic aspect is a little harsh hindering drinkability.

The beer is brownish red with but a small head that leaves only faint traces of lacing on the glass.

The aroma is the best aspect of Amazing Grace ale. Scents include barrels, grapes, cherries, wine and alcohol.

The taste did not quite live up to the promise of the aroma. The flavor is really tannic and bites at the palate with each sip. Cherries come through nicely, as well as prominent alcohol throughout.

The beer is medium bodied. This could / should be a smoother ride. While I appreciate the bold showing of the red wine barrels in the nose and taste, the beer comes off a bit too harsh and tannic.

A small portion was plenty for me. This was an OK, but not something that left me wanting more.

Bottle shared by Thorpe, thanks. What's the deal with this beer? Is it "Lost and Found" aged in red wine barrels? I'm guessing that's what it is.

Beer is brown and mostly clear with a pathetic attempt at forming a head and some lacing, carbonation is low.

Aroma is nice though, vinous and mildly sour with some sweet malt and mild yeast ester character on the palate. Overall a decent aroma.

Taste is a bit of the let down, it's a fine tasting beer but the volume is turned all the way down on it. Some sweetness, some yeast, some figs / prunes / stone fruits, some wine just not a lot of anything. Pretty big disappointment, oh wait this was from Lost Abbey, those guys sure know how to try hard. Keep aiming for the middle Tomme. You'll get there.

a - Pours a murky red-orange color with no head and light carbonation evident.

s - Smells of red wine, oak, sour dark fruits, figs, vinegar, and light vanilla.

t - Tastes of lightly sour dark fruits, figs, raisins, vinegar, oak, and slight acedic. A small step down from the nose.

m - Medium body and low carbonation.

o - Overall a nice twist on a Dubbel. Some definite wine and sourness to it, though nothing too mouth pucking. a nice dubbel I would have again.

Opens with a complete lack of carbonation

Pours a hazed caramel with a modest amount of tan head. Some floaties, trace amounts of lacing & head retention

S: Sourness & tartness; vinegar & leather, a bit of horse blanket as this warms

T: Follows the nose, peaches & plums hidden underneath, along with much oaky dryness, some vanilla hides there as well. Acidic & tart notes dominate as this warms, I get a touch of green apples & persimmons as well. Finishes tart & dry with a sharp smack of tartness & oak

MF: Medium bodied, sooo dry, with minimal carbonation, enough to push the tartness along though.

A very done sour version of the style, different & memorable. I wish this was a better looking beer as far as head retention & lacing, but really didn't detract too much. sour freaks will delight in this one IMO...

Pours a moderately-bright reddish-copper color with a very thin off-white head and a bit of lacing, though not much else. The nose brings forward plenty of the red-wine notes along with a bit of dark fruits and some oak. A moderate amount of acidity comes through in the nose. Really complex and everything melds together quite well.

The taste is a bit of a letdown after the nose. The red-wine notes are there, but the acidity is too brisk and simply takes over the entire flavor of the beer. While it's nice, it's just too much for what else is there. The red wine is good, but it is overwhelmed. A bit of the base dubbel lingers in the background. Mouthfeel is cut down by the excess acidity. The red-wine component or the base beer needs to come out more. Drinks well enough, but there are some fairly-large issues here. Nonetheless, the nose was excellent.

2010 release, so glad to see this stuff in Georgia!

A - Pours a rusty brown with just the slightest whisp of a white head that quickly disappears. There's a little visible carbonation, but that's it. Kinda ugly.
S - Sour red vinegar, brown sugar, cherries and leather with a HUGE oak profile. I've been to Napa and Sonoma and smelled aging red wine barrels at a winery, it smells identical to that. Really nice.
T - Red wine grapes, cherries and leather stand out to me, as does the vanilla and wood from the barrels. Nicely tart and lactic, not too sour. Again, tons of oak, almost too much if I'm being honest.
M - Slick, with a medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. Sad about the almost non-existent carbonation, but not a deal-breaker in this case.
D - Moderately drinkable, but the high ABV and the huge quantities of oak regulate this to a sipper.

Well, this is one of the 3 last beers I'll be getting as a Sinners club member...sad. 2010 edition.

I popped the cork, a nice pop ensued, big blast of the aroma to my nose...

It pours a cloudy rust colour with about an inch of off white foam. Tilting my glass reveals some very good lacing.

Sticking my nose just about in the glass, I'm greeted by a very lovely sour aroma of cherries and vinegar with a nice blast of Brett. Holy cow this smells so damn good.

Taking a few sips, which is a pleasure, reveals all. Huge sourness coming from cherries? definitely reminiscent of the tannins that make the red wines enjoyable, some woody notes, a bit of the Brett I mentioned in the smell...I'm trying to find the toasted Malt mentioned on the label but I guess I'm failing at that. No matter. This is one hell of a delicious brew but in no way would I even remotely call this a Belgian Dubbel. If that is what the base beer is *supposed* to be, it got lost in the shuffle. Again, I have to stress, this is not a complaint. I LOVE this beer.

On the lighter end of medium bodied with more than ample carbonation, I find the mouth feel very nice indeed.

Drinkability for this 8.0% abv, not 9.5% abv as per the BA entry for the beer, is simply excellent. I'm wondering if this is a reincarnation of a previous brew? Maybe that's why it being entered as a Dubbel is throwing me off? Anywho, I dig this beer big time!
