Much thanks to hopdog for unveiling this one...
Appears a hazy, murky auburn with a 1 finger, light tan head that slowly fades out. Tons of scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of vanilla, oak, grapes, cherries, and raspberries.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with complex flavors that make this beer exceptional. Notes of vanilla and a touch of cocoa nibs keep this one top notch.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, mildly tart, with oaky tannins running along the tongue. Chewy goodness of excellent balance.

There was a loud pop when the cork was removed. It didn't look like it was going to foam over, but when I turned back from grabbing a pair of glasses there was a puddle of beer and bubbles around the bottle. Oh well. It had a murky brown colour, sort of like toffee, with some fine bubbles skimming the surface and a collar around the glass. Some spotty, sticky lacing. Aromas of funky brett and red wine, a little earthy and musty with malty caramel notes underneath, just a touch of vinegar. The flavour was acidic and tart, quite sharp up front, but this gave way to a mellow caramel and toffee sweetness in the finish. In between is the earthy funk, oak and red wine. As it warmed, chocolate notes appeared, as well as berry fruitiness and light alcohol flavour and warmth in the finish. Plenty of carbonation, medium bodied. I really enjoyed the combination of flavours and thought they worked well together.

Well, this is one of the 3 last beers I'll be getting as a Sinners club member...sad. 2010 edition.

I popped the cork, a nice pop ensued, big blast of the aroma to my nose...

It pours a cloudy rust colour with about an inch of off white foam. Tilting my glass reveals some very good lacing.

Sticking my nose just about in the glass, I'm greeted by a very lovely sour aroma of cherries and vinegar with a nice blast of Brett. Holy cow this smells so damn good.

Taking a few sips, which is a pleasure, reveals all. Huge sourness coming from cherries? definitely reminiscent of the tannins that make the red wines enjoyable, some woody notes, a bit of the Brett I mentioned in the smell...I'm trying to find the toasted Malt mentioned on the label but I guess I'm failing at that. No matter. This is one hell of a delicious brew but in no way would I even remotely call this a Belgian Dubbel. If that is what the base beer is *supposed* to be, it got lost in the shuffle. Again, I have to stress, this is not a complaint. I LOVE this beer.

On the lighter end of medium bodied with more than ample carbonation, I find the mouth feel very nice indeed.

Drinkability for this 8.0% abv, not 9.5% abv as per the BA entry for the beer, is simply excellent. I'm wondering if this is a reincarnation of a previous brew? Maybe that's why it being entered as a Dubbel is throwing me off? Anywho, I dig this beer big time!

Big thanks to grub for sharing this 750 ml bottle.

Pours a cloudy and ruddy dark orange/brown, reddish highlights in the edges, decently thick off white head forms, drops to a solid ring around the glass, some lace spots. Smell is interesting, some funky sourness, sour cherries, caramel, bread, very malty, lots of fruit, wood, vanilla, barnyard, lemon peel, grapes, not a dubbel, this has been mislabeled. Taste is siimilar, sweet/sour up front, caramel, bread and oak, vanilla, wine, quite funky, almost a floral hoppiness underneath the sourness, light bit of yeasty spiciness in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation, quite nice, very complex, and the wine barrels come through quite nice. The sourness is refined and smooth. Thanks Russ!

Appearance - Pours a carmel-red with only a few tan bubbles forming around the edges.

Smell - Red wine, grapes, oak.

Taste - Woody, redwine.

Drinkability - Low carbonation.

Overall - Nice, but is it a beer or a wine?

Pours a slightly hazy brownish-amber color with a half-finger light tan head. The head recedes quickly into a thin ring around the glass leaving light lacing and decent legs.

Smells of indistinct dark malts with large amounts of oak and tannins with hints of tart cherries and assorted dried dark fruits - raisins and dried plums. Also present are solid amounts of funk - musty leather if I had to choose a descriptor.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Dark malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by mildly tart cherry and dark fruit flavors. Midway through the sip the barrel really shines with huge hits of funk, oak, and tannins, in that order. The barrel influence carries through to a crisp and mildly tart ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall I had to spend a few minutes with my nose in this beer before even taking a sip as there was so much going on. It's on the verge of being another "flat LA beer" but avoids it and the soft carbonation is entirely appropriate for this beer. A well done brew that's well worth a shot.

Bottle from batch 1 that I received from NFLMVP way back when. Thanks, Steve! This beer was released December 2007-ish, so that makes it shy of 5 years old. Labeled 8.0% ABV

The cork pops out energetically, and the beer is brilliantly clear, a nice deep ruby red with a dense, brown head comprised of tiny bubbles. Retention is excellent, and no real lacing is noticeable, but the carbonation is high.

The nose has a blend of Brett and red wine. The Brett character is very nice. Spicy (mild clove and pepper), earthy and a little leathery, it blends harmoniously with the barrel character (a little fruit, mildly vinous, some leather). I can't say I've had the base beer before, but I reckon that's where the slight raisin and candi sugar notes on the nose come from. No sourness, but plenty of Brett funk and even a little tartness. Adding the yeast, and allowing the beer to warm up brings out notes of berries and unsweetened cocoa. Pretty excellent IMO.

The palate opens dry, vinous and loaded with Brett character. In some ways, this is like a Bon Chien-lite - not as vinous, not as sour, but still pretty Brett-forward with the flavors of clove, earth and leather integrated very well with the barrel character. Fairly intense flavors of earth, leather and tannins meld with a moderate vinous character. I don't think I've had a Sangiovese before, but going by this beer, I'd say it's on the more delicate end of the spectrum, with reserved fruit and light spiciness. Again, no sourness, but a moderate Brett and barrel tartness are present. Fairly tannic but working with the earthy and leathery notes, this beer is rather intense in its Brett-forwardness. There's a certain sharpness to it as well, rather spicy (black cardamom? black cumin?) that lingers in the back. Light in body, medium-high carbonation, this beer finishes dry, tannic and lightly vinous. Pretty impressive IMO, the whole is definitely better than the sum of the parts here.

Thanks to jedwards for breaking this one out at our Lost Abbey tasting. Served in a Sinners tulip. Pours the color of cider or caramel with a hazy clarity. No head and only a few residual spots of lacing present after each tilt. Nose is vinous and acidic with a toasted oak character. Taste is slightly vinegary, a little oaky and some residual vanilla notes are expressed at the finish. Moutfeel is light in body with a lively carbonation, some acidity and a dry finish. An interesting brew, but not sure why it's classified as a dubbel. This is an extremely tart beer; so much so that it is difficult to tease out all the flavors. Those nose in and of itself, makes it worth the purchase price.

On tap at Sean's 30th Birthday Extravaganza.

A - Brownish red beer with a whitish head that left a little bit of lace on the sides.

S - Nice grapes and vinous notes. Some dark fruit, vinegar, vanilla, and a little barrel.

T - Tastes is a lot like the nose, with a little bit of caramelized sugar. Dark fruits slightly soured, with some vinegar and tartness.

M - Pretty nicely bodied, fuller side of medium, moderate carbonation.

O - Not bad, I didn't realize this was classified as a dubbel. Pretty interesting, and glad I got to tr it.

Bottle courtesy of KingG poured into a tulip.

The cork popped with some serious power and the foam started to creep out of the bottle as I poured it. The body is a deep, clear copper with a huge creamy tan head that settles in as a big cap leaving spotty lacing.

The aroma is much more tart and funky than I was expecting. The underlying dubbel aromas are there, especially some dark fruits and caramel, but the funk is really in the forefront in the nose as well as tart cherries and some dry woody scents as well.

I think the taste is slightly better than the aroma as it seems to really bring in the dubbel character with more caramel sweetness and candi sugar than the aroma. The initial blast is of tart fruits, maybe cherries, as well as a hint of funk. The dubbel starts to show through in the middle before a dry, woody finish to close things out.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lots of carbonation and definitely much more tart and dry than your garden-variety dubbel.

This is an extremely unique and tasty dubbel . It's certainly nothing close to what I was expecting with the serious tart fruit presence and emerging funk. Thanks to Joey for sharing this beauty.

Rolling tan bubbles bead together in a quick cascade for a dense, sticky head. Hazed, almost cloudy, tawny-colored brew. Granny Smith apples, pear juice, black cherries, anise and wood make for a very complex aroma. Creamy and slick medium body with a light, fluffy smoothness from the carbonation. Let's cover the fruitiness first; lots of pear, light cherry and a bit of kiwi. Right after the fruit comes a staunch oak wood character that aims to pucker the palate. A hint of medicinal flavor within, mild warming alcohol. Toasted bread crust, touch of dough biscuit and dried grass from the malt hit middle to end. Minimal hopping, which is fine, as the tartness that surrounds the palate brings balance to the table big time. The finish is dry and nearly clean with a solid wood tone that puckers the palate a bit.

Killer. We love this beer. Drinkable, insanely complex and perhaps one of the best Dubbels put to our lips in a long time.

375ml bottle poured into snifter. Thanks for sharing, sleepyhead.

A: Pours dark amber with a thin head that quickly faded to collar.
S: Vinous and tart notes of cherries, dry oak, red wine, and earth.
T: Not as tart as the nose suggested. Flavors are definitely vinous, a bit cheesy, and lighty sour with fruit pith. I get a bit of buttery oak and fruit skins in the finish.
M: Thinner body, tingly but very low carbonation, greasy mouthfeel with a drying finish.
O: Very vinous and drying and a great drinking beer that’s not overly tart. Thanks again.

App- Well it has the look of a Lost Abbey beer. It was that unique muddled light brown. No head or maybe a touch of bubbles presented. No cling. Just seems more like a wild ale to me. Not a BA Dubbel.

Smell- It retains a bit of the Dubbel notes. A bit of the yeast is there with that effervescent bubble note. Add to that a tartness and a bit of tannic like wine with some dark grapes.

Taste- Again, tastes just like a LA beer. Has a clean and simple profile with the base beer retaining most of the flavors and the barrels just adding a note of acidity and some complexities with a little tannin and oak.

Mouth- Medium bodied and medium carbonated. Finishes just like a red wine to me. A bit dry a bit tannic.

Drink- A nice beer to say the least. The barrels add a nice touch to a good lineup beer. I'd like a whole bottle to sit with and see how flavors envelope.

***Slow gusher alert. This one didn't spew, it just slowly kept coming out of the bottle***

Poured a medium and cloudy/muddy brown color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of earhtiness, wood, oak, red wine, dark fruits, and grapes. Some funkiness. Tasts of lighter wood, vanilla, dark fruits, and vinous. Smooth and soft body. Nice light sour and tart finish.

Damn this one was good and really hit the spot. I wish I had more, I could drink this one every day.

A-Hazy deep reddish copper with a medium tan head that holds on well and reduced to a thin cap and left decent lace.

S-Sharp, tart cherry, crushed red grapes, sweet caramel malt and oak dryness.

T-Fruity notes pop out front giving way to dry oak, sweet caramel malt, and musty, day old, rich, doughy bread.

M-Medium-heavy bodied with a nice smoothness and actual chewy feel.

D-Not really sure what this is suppose to be style wise but it is a very pleasant and easy drinking brew. The flavours work well together and the light mustiness highlights the liquid fruitcake approach.

2006 bottle. Poured into Night of the Living Ales taster glass.

A - Pours a reddish/brown color, some fizzy head that quickly vanishes and leaves a few bubbles here and there. No real cap, retention, or lacing to speak of.

S - Similar to Cuvee de Tomme, a little less oak and funk. Oak, sour grapes, some tart notes. Def not a Dubbel anymore...the bugs have done a great job on this beer!

T - I called it "CdT Lite". There's a nice tart/funk mixed with oak. It's not super-sour or anything, but it's wonderful what the bugs have done to this beer.

M - Medium bodied, light carbonation, dry finish.

D - Man, what a surprise! This one was so damn good. I wish I had another bottle, but this was my only one. This shows what the bugs can do over 4 years. Props to Tomme!

Best Damn Sour Fest

Dark ruby and brown with no head and very little visible carbonation. This looks lifeless, limp, and oily in the glass.

Strong acidic aroma throughout, mild oak presence, along with lots of dried cherry and currant aromas.

This beer is delicious. This is an incredibly well balanced combination of strong acidic sourness, sweet and tart cherries, dates, and currants, along with a nicely balanced though present earthy barnyard funk character. Complete.

Medium bodied and very low in carbonation. While not too distracting, I wish it had at least a touch more carbonation.

Though lacking in appearance and body, this is one fabulous sour. I would be more than happy to drink this again and again.

Reddish brown with a collar of white head, no lace to speak of here. Smell is full of oak and vanilla, fruity, cherry and plum, red wine, acidic/tart scents come off as well, bready with slight alcohol. Taste is acidic and tart, mildly funky, oak, vanilla, fruity flavours, cherries and grape skins. Light-med carbonation, medium-full body, nice feel. Quite drinkable and very nice, sour and quite complex, really good stuff here.

750 ml bottle purchased from the brewery three months ago for about fifteen dollars if I can remember right, poured into my Duvel tulip glass

A-Dark ruby red with highlights of brown throughout, small 1/2 inch off white bubbly head that settled pretty fast, not much retention or lacing, tons of small bubbles rushing to the top

S-Red wine, cherries, sourness, brettanomyces, raisins, dark fruits, sweet malt, Belgian yeast, not much bubble gum like I remember Lost and Found having, also a little booze, and spices

T-To my pleasant surprise, I was welcomed with a mouth full of bretty and cherry tart in the first sip I took, there were some berries in the middle, then some dryness in the aftertaste that was rather wine-like, did not taste its base beer until the very end when the sourness and funk went away for the most part, lots of raisins and brown sugar later on, complex brew that changed quite a bit as the glass went along, brettanomyces made this one taste great in my opinion, hope they brew this again

M-Tart and dry mouthfeel, medium bodied, lots and lots of carbonation, taste lingered for a while, this one had a lot funkier feeling than I would have thought, nice agressive sensation

D-Almost drank this whole bottle by myself, could have easily, not too heavy on the stomach, smooth and refreshing, pretty high in ABV though, highly drinkable BA beer

Not a huge fan of the non barrel aged Lost and Found but this one was a nice surprise, wish I would have bought more of it when I had the chance, another great beer from Lost Abbey, would definitely drink again, recommended

I got this one from a nice in-person trade from billab914. Thanks man!

A: Reddish-brown, cloudy, and with a completely flat disposition. A "Lost Abbey" brew flat... imagine that..

S: Sour for sure, but with a good bit of brown sugary maltiness that made this one, to me, more of an Aude Bruin.

T: I got the red wine barrel contribution right away. Bonesuckingly dry, nutty (almonds), and with a mild dessert quality that's pretty cool (maybe that's the vanilla).

M: In dying need of some suds, but this one certainly packs a punch in the sour category. However, I didn't get much vinegar here... more like a sour red wine, with a grainy texture.

O: I don't know how much this one costs because I got it in a trade. Being that as it may, I think this brew is really good.

2010 release, so glad to see this stuff in Georgia!

A - Pours a rusty brown with just the slightest whisp of a white head that quickly disappears. There's a little visible carbonation, but that's it. Kinda ugly.
S - Sour red vinegar, brown sugar, cherries and leather with a HUGE oak profile. I've been to Napa and Sonoma and smelled aging red wine barrels at a winery, it smells identical to that. Really nice.
T - Red wine grapes, cherries and leather stand out to me, as does the vanilla and wood from the barrels. Nicely tart and lactic, not too sour. Again, tons of oak, almost too much if I'm being honest.
M - Slick, with a medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. Sad about the almost non-existent carbonation, but not a deal-breaker in this case.
D - Moderately drinkable, but the high ABV and the huge quantities of oak regulate this to a sipper.

Pours an interesting hazy, brownish amber with some red tinges. No real carbonation, just a thin white crust.

Got to be honest: Lost Abbey has been on a fantastic run with the last three or four releases. I am enjoying this beer (as I review it), but this is not up to the lofty standards set by Gift of the Magi, Angel's Share, or Older Viscosity.

This beer has a serious grape/vinous/pureed raisin bite. And that bite is a bit much. I don't know if it's the barrels destroying the complexity, or what, but the character of this beer is decidedly one dimensional. The smell actually promises more than the taste delivers, with some wood-sy notes.

Not a bad beer, just decidedly one note.

750ml bottle, corked and caged. sampled dec 27/08.

pours deep red, nearly brown, mostly clear. a small dense tan head forms, quickly falling to a ring around the glass that lasts until the last sip. spotty lace.

aroma is great, but this ain't no dubbel. it may have been a dubbel in it's former life - as lost and found - but the barrel has definitely funked this one up. malt vinegar. touch of lemon. leather and horse blanket. bit of alcohol. cracker. whole wheat bread. touch of dark fruit hiding under the funk. touch of raw oak.

taste is good. low bitterness level. malt vinegar. touch of lemon, but less than in the aroma. big malty base - wheat bread, cracker, bit of biscuit - tempered by a hefty funk - horse blanket, leather, bit of tobacco. light alcohol. very faint dark fruit. touch of grapefruit. bit of vanilla and raw oak.

mouthfeel is good. clingy funk on the tongue. medium-high carbonation level. medium body with a fairly dry finish.

drinkability is good. nicely balanced. touch of warming alcohol accented by a nice funky presence.

Pros: Really nice aroma showcasing notes of Cabernet, vanilla, dark fruit. Very nice appearance, with a long lasting head. Nice purity and essence. Excellent mouth feel. Lots of depth.

Cons: Not a single flaw in this beer that I can detect.

A terrific ale from start to finish.

Muddy brown color. A lot of carbonation. Had to get it in the glass asap before the bottle floweth over. Big off white head. Aroma of earth and wood. Sort of a lactic sour smell. Fairly big malty flavor. Again with the lactic bite. Somewhat of a dried fruit/fig flavor. Slight anise in the finish. Minimum oakiness. Decent mouthfeel-quite full bodied. A decent beer overall.
