A massive beer in every sense of the word. A stronger and more contemplative version of our Lost and Found Ale. Judgment Day is the base beer for our Cuvee de Tomme. Many of the Trappist Breweries produce a version of beer which ages incredibly well for many years to come. And, since none of us knows when the end of the world is coming, we suggest you stock up with lots of Lost Abbey beers so that when the end of the world magically appears from no where, you’ll have a beer or two on hand for even the stingiest of angels.

1st bottle release.

Deep cola brown pour with garnet highlights. Not much carbonation but a few bubbles. Aromas of dark malts with a mix of caramel, raisins and lots of dark fruits. Cocoa and spice with an earthy yeast undertone.

First sip brings smooth dark malts upfront with molasses, caramel and raisin flavors. Dark fruits mix through. Cocoa and bready undertones move into spicy yeast accents as it flows down. Mildly roasted with sweetness on the finish. Pretty tasty.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth. Mellow carbonation works well here IMHO and this bottle is far from flat. Overall tasty but it's still not near what I remember Mother of All Beers being. Will need to snag another fresh bottle sometime.

Belgian style bomber, caged and corked w/o freshness info. This one opened with a whimpy "poof" and then poured w/ next to no carbonation, no head and no lacing, hmmm..things pick up with the raisiny nose and then full throttle, tasty, raisiny notes picked up in the early sips. Malty sweet, some Belgian yeasty, nutty notes, rum soaked raisins, brandy whiffs, yum. More quality brew from L.A./Port brewing

Appearance: 1/3 inch head, dark red/brown in color, hazy, high carbonation

Smell: raisin, dark fruit, and toasted malt

Taste: raisin, pumpernickel bread, cinnamon, dark fruit, and alcohol

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, slightly sweet with a bitter backbone, high carbonation

Drinkability: A nice and complex quad that is very raisin friendly. I do like raisin and bread combination. I would get this again but have other favorites from the brewery.

The beer pours dark brown with a tan head. The aroma is raisins, alcohol and brown sugar. The flavor is awesome with raisins, brown sugar, milk chocolate, alcohol and Belgian yeast. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Murky brown pour with absolutely no head. I tried to force one out and there was nothing. Raisins, prunes, brown sugar, dank yeast, and earth in the aroma. Sweet but a little smoky in the taste. Molasses, more raisins, toasted bread, and dusty yeast esters mix well. The lack of carbonation gives this a syrupy, liquer-like quality. Still, this is very good.

Lost Abbey

(I don't typically review the same beer twice; I only do so when my experiences between serving types are vastly different. My experience was much better on tap at the brewery compared to my bottle of this beer.)

Dark brown and amber. Thin head. Wonderful lacing down the glass. Carbonated! Hip hip! Hooray!

A pungent, pleasant smell. The dark fruits take center stage which include both dark raisins and burnt cherries, though I wish there was more than just the fruit--and that's all I smell here really.

The initial taste is spicy, malty, and fruity. The Belgian yeast is present and the raisin flavor stays throughout. A tasty, yet relatively simple quad.

Big, thick, and heavy in the mouth, which is welcome. Bring it on! Plenty of carbonation makes this a pleasure to drink.

I expect a lot out of my quads, and that being said, this is very good beer; however, this one falls just short of the great and world-class quads. All in all, a delicious beer.

Dark brown, purple hue (or was it the label?), without much head, didn't look inviting at all. Aroma was largely muted, didn't take much away from it.

What is this? Equal parts prune juice and Bud Light with a boilermakeresque shot in it? Ugh. Alcohol soaked prunes. Massive alcohol on the tongue. Maybe some fig or other dark fruit to it, but I just can't get passed the prunes and hard liquor. Carbonation wasn't helping.

I'm sorry, but I thought this beer was downright terrible. Can't recommend it.

On tap at the brewery in San Marcos.

Pours clear but near black with a white head that soon reduces to a ring but leaves some lacing.

Aroma: boozy aroma with some dark roasted grains and spicing.

Flavor: more funky and less fruity than the aroma, but not challenging to drink. Lightly bitter finish.

Feel: medium-full body; medium, lightly crisp carbonation.

O: good, but ABV is too high and complexity is too low.

This beer pours a dark murkey brown color with a mohogany tint when held up to the light. It sports a thin light brown head that fades a little too quickly leaving a very light lacing.

This beer has an aroma of dark fruit. I smell raisins, dates, prunes and figs. It might also have a light chocolate covered cherry aroma. I can also detect some spicy flavor. Coriander mostly. The alcohol content is present in the nose. This beer also has a sweet caramel malty aroma.

This beer tastes much like it smells. A lot of dark fruits up front. Mostly raisins and figs. It has a sweet malty flavor as well. I taste the slightly spicy flavor of coriander. As with the aroma, the alcohol content is present in the flavor. I also taste a slight earthy yeast flavor.

This beer is very full bodied. It leaves a fig like aftertaste. The alcohol warms slightly as it goes down. It is carbonated just right.

I doubt this beer would make the greatest session beer. It is high in alcohol, and the flavor is quite aggressive.

Overall: I like this beer. I liked it when it was brewed at Solana, and I like it now. Different name, same great beer. The Mother of All Beers.

Pours almost black with a good finger of brown head. Some scant amounts of lacing too.

First scent is yeast, smells like a quad. Getting a bit more raisin than other quads, but not as much as I expected. Cherries in there too, along with a slight boozey backbone. A bit of sourness on the nose too, but just a bit.

Raisins are much more present in the taste. First is yeast, the usual suspects, then raisins hit hard mid mouth. Very fruity, much lighter tasting for a quad. Very sweet and a slight hop aftertaste. Pretty well balanced.

Slippery and slick with low carbonation. Aftertaste of sourness and bitterness lingers on the tongue.

Overall par for the course as far as quads go. That's a good thing. It's not blowing me away, but it is a solid effort. Wouldn't actively seek this out but would get again.

Bottle purchased from Hi-Times in CA.

Pours a dark brownish-purple color with a half-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of bread and dark fruits - raisins and plums - with hints of toffee and caramel.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Sweet caramel malt and toffee flavors up front segue quickly into dark fruit flavors - raisins and plums - that are a bit sweeter than the smell intimates. Midway through the sip hints of brown sugar enter into the flavor profile before fading back to let the fruit flavors shine through to a crisp and sweet finish. The alcohol is well-hidden however it is noticeable as it warms on its way down.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a smooth thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could certainly have another.

Overall this is a well done beer however I think it may be more up the alley of a BSDA more so than a quad. Regardless it's tasty and worth a shot.

750ml corked and caged brown bottle poured into a chalice. Notes.

A: Pours a deep dark woody brown with ruby highlights on the edges. Moderate head on the pour with a fat skim of creamy retention. Decent lacing.

S: Rich dark fruits with caramel, toffee and a bit of chocolate. A moderate amount of booziness. Pretty straight forward but right on.

T/M: More of the dark fruits with a defined raisin note from the brewing addition. More of teh rich caramel and toffee with some light, milky chocolate. Hops are there but muted. Plenty of boozy but not too much as to get in the way. Body is medium full to full with somewhat weak carbonation.

D: Pretty drinkable for 10.5%, even with obvious alcoholic notes. I think the carbonation needs to be a bit higher, though.

poured into a chimay goblet...pours dark red black hell i can't tell....i put my laser pointer to it...the light doesn't make it through...the head is creamy and fades quickly....the lacing is splotchy....

smells almost a little smoky....with lots of dark fruits....smells a little chewy...and sweet....

wow the taste kinda kicks you in the ass!...intense metallic, dryness, fruity, chocolate, and alcohol....not bad after that first sip...and then you kinda get a good feel for this beer...

the feel is dry....but it taste like it should be creamy...if that makes any sense....

the drink ability isn't that great....its not bad beer at all...but to try to get through a whole big bottle of this beer is gonna be tough

Poured from the 750mL bottle into a Belgian Tulip (7/24/13). I wasn't sure what style of beer I was getting with this one.

As I poured it, I was immediately called to the pitch-black body and the viscous quality it seemed to have as it glugged its way from the bottle. A foamy, dark khaki head forms and remains for a number of minutes before slowly receding. The head leaves behind a wall of lace on all sides of the glass.

There seems to be an interesting mix of dark roasted malt aromas and dark fruit on the nose. Caramel and vanilla meet the sweetness of raisin and plum and have me in dessert mode.

Much more raisin emerges on the tongue, there's a huge port-like taste that results. But there's still a stout-like quality to this beer, including some chocolatey, coffee-like dark malts, and some oak qualities of vanilla and caramel. There's some booze in there, even after a year, so that causes a slight down-rating. I eventually start noticing a cocoa quality that lingers at the finish.

I get a bit more astringency than I want at various points in drinking this, but it's otherwise, quite enjoyable. There's thick viscous mouthfeel, enough yeast and carbonation to make the whole mouth take notice.

A damn good beer aside from the heavy booze presence. I loved it in every other regard. Maybe I'd suggest 2 or more years of aging to address the astringency.

Pours an almost black amber with a tiny head that disappears completely very fast.

Aromas are total dark Belgium...dark fruits and belguim yeasts.

Taste is a little hot and will improve with about six months, but sweet dark roasted malt, dark fruits like raisins and prunes, bready yeast and a light hop bitterness finishes everything off keeping it from becoming too sweet or cloying. I also notice a little brown sugar and caramel in the middle but nothing overly sweet or cloying at all.

Wonderful dryness on the finish and a very full yet clean mouthfeel.

I enjoy a good dark Belgium ale and this one is an excellent interpretation of the style. Good job, Tommy.

750 ml bottle with cork and cage. Served cool, around 45 degrees, into a chalice.

Judgment Day is a very dark redish brown. When held to the light, only a little sneaks through the edges. It appears to have good clarity and the head has fair retention.

Aroma is sweet and malty with nice Belgian yeast character. A little bit of roast, some dark fruit, and spice.

Flavor is rich and full with toffee, caramel, dark malts, brown sugar, dark fruits. Raisins, figs, and clove are all in there. Good depth and balance.

Mouthfeel is medium-plus in body and well carbonated. Alcohol is strong but not overpowering or hot. Definately noticible after a few sips.

Overall a solid quadrupel but clearly not up there with the best. A very good Californian version though.

Corked and cage 700 ml. bottle poured into a Brooklyn tulip.

Appearance: This sucker's dark, but not opaque in an RIS way; it's more of an extremely dark-black red, but not black, more red. One of the darkest Quads I've ever seen.

Smell: I have to say -- I keep swirling, and I keep asking what's the dominant aroma here, and it's definitely alcohol. Through it there's some nice mild and subdued funk and sweat sock along with some dry red wine, mild caramel, toffee, red licorice, and some other mild fruit esters. Still, I expected much more, and the booze seems to unfortunately dominate here.

Taste: A big sense of the Quad here, mixed with a lot of dark raisins and vinous flavors, along with chocolate. But again, the booze seems to dominate. Here, though, it's not as volatile as it is with the aroma. But again, there's not a lot of complexity, and there's a lot of booze. The raisins are big here, with toffee and vanilla coming through, lingering with some mild citrus at the end.

Mouthfeel: A big-bodied and extremely creamy brew, and this becomes its best element, with its silky carbonation coming through exponentially, with tons of spacing and expansiveness.

Drinkability: Kind of a weird brew, to be honest, which is why the weird reviews end up happening, as far as the numbers go. I feel like this may sincerely be one that's meant for cellaring -- right now, as I stated, the booze is too much, kind of, and if I'm saying that, it's something. That said, there's still a lot to admire, especially in its ballsiness and raucousness, which I can dig sometimes. Cellar it. See what happens. Now, though -- I wouldn't recommend it for the QPR probably.

Pours a lovely, lovely deep dark chocolate brown color, totally opaque which gives it the illusion of being pure pitch black. The head is thick and tan, creamy, firm, plenty of stamina. I'm in awe already.

Nose is a heady mix of dark fruit/berry and mineral, with a fainter slash of milk chocolate. And for a 10.5% beer, amazing that alcohol is hardly detected in the nose. That could change with warming though...

First couple sips already reveal alcohol on the tongue, although nothing overbearing. Remarkable that it's not bigger in this department, actually, considering ABV and style. Otherwise there's a totally juicy dark fruit vibe, like grape/raisin and various berries; chili-spiked cocoa nibs; mineral/earth; nutty; sharp-and-sweet spices. An interesting and original take on the style, yet also true enough to style that you wouldn't mistake this for anything else but a Belgian quad.

Pretty effervescent in the mouth, though not prickly or sharp. Airy but not lacking in body. A bit sticky, which seems to keep the herbal/bitter/spicy finish going for awhile...

I like the raisin addition, and it drinks like raisins eat: sugary sweet, but not TOO sugary sweet. Just right. And the script on the back label is worth reading. Carpe Diem!

A cross-style Belgian strong, as all their beers. Black with a thin head, lace on the glass. Chocolate nose, tastes like a barleywine. Tastes a bit like an imperial stout, with chocolate, a bit of roasted barley. Cherry fruity. Significant carbonation that tingles the palate. Sampled at Modiale 2007.
After 6 years Peter FM brings a bottle. Some sourness and lots of sweetness. Pepper, cloves n taste, a unique invigorating aroma of spice, fruit.

Poured from a 750mL caged-and-corked bottle into my Trappist Westvleteren goblet. I've been cellaring this for at least a year - I think this is an '08 vintage, possibly '07.

A thin smattering of desert-sand bubbles ringed by a thicker collar conceals a bole body, incredibly dark with faint auburn and copper highlights when held up to a strong light. Average retention, lacing, and legs.

Light prune/date/fig aromas (from the raisins I assume) intermingle with a deep maltiness. Dark fruit pits, pumpernickel, a touch of sugar, and a faint caraway are there as well as a sweet floral note, akin to violets (from the East Kent Goldings?).

A bit boozey on the palate, as the alcohol masks the melanoidins and fruity esters to some degree. Malt balls, dark kano syrup, bread crust, and a faint coffee note (possibly from chocolate malt?) emerge. The finish is earthy and dry with a hint of walnuts. Good but somewhat muddled - the ingredients are good, but the yeast isn't doing much for me.

Medium bodied, a touch slick/oily, with moderate carbonation.

I was expecting more depth of flavor, or generally a more potent ale with this one - but compared to true Belgian quads, this is somewhat dull. Lost & Found Abbey Ale (their Dubbel) is superior in its use of raisins - I'll be sticking with that one...

No head at all even though it was poured aggressively. Murky brownish red in color.
Raisons, red wine, alcohol, doesnt smell that exciting.
Lots of raisons and alcohol. Not very sweet compared to other quads.
Not much carbination, not as creamy as I would expect a quad to be.
I split the bottle with 3 other people and still did not want to finish my glass.

Shared at my first hosted tasting event

A - Brown pour with red color along the edges. Slight brown foam head, and good clarity.

S - Smells like white grapes, raisins, and some peppery spice. Had a boozy smell that became stronger as the liquid settled.

T - Nice favor of fresh and dried fruit, that had a slight warming burn at the end. The spice tasted more sugary than it smelled.

M - Clearly a sipper, but one that seemed to e a bit more difficult to enjoy than some of the better belgian quads.

O - Fun beer, and my first try at Lost Abbey. While a nice quad, it is far from the very good ones that you can get much easier.

750ml bottle, presumably scooped in Chicago last summer. split and served with some hazelnut crusted pork chops with a morel-brandy cream sauce

appearance: served in my hopleaf tulip, strong foamy head, very dark body, nice head retention but the foamy nature is a little unsettling

smell: belgian dark aromas - raisin, strong wave of alcohol, lots of strong dark fruits

taste: a little hot - lags behind the belgian frontrunners (westy, rochefort, bernardus) but one of the better american quads i've had...alcohol just needs to be turned down a bit...dark fruit, raisin, a splash of grape soda

mouthfeel: a bit hot, high carbonation

drinkability: ok

Pours a nice creamy head, suprising for a 10.5% brew. Immediate taste of chocolate, alcohol, and a hint of raisins. Hops and malt flavors almost cancel one another...for a nice balance.

This is not a beer for beginners. Take the words of my niece..."Thanks for leaving the 'Judgment Day'. It was definitely a religious experience...after it disgraced my mouth, it went down to hell where it belongs."

Not sure if she meant the sink or if she swallowed it.

Anyway, for the highly experienced,this beer offers all the strength of a barleywine without the overpowering esters of a typical Belgian, or the hops of a double IPA. Definitely a unique beer worth trying...several times!

Vintage 2008

Judgment Day pours a dark, mahogany brown color. It’s a little hazy. A few specks of floating yeast are noted. Backlighting reveals nice crimson and burgundy highlights. A tan head sits on top. It’s under a finger tall and recedes quickly. Maybe too much alcohol for it. Lacing was light.

The nose is just okay. It’s a tad weak and needs strength. It starts out with dark fruit notes. Smells like raisin to me. No shock there. There’s a hint of some chocolate malt. It’s definitely cocoa-ish. Belgian yeast is noted, but isn’t quite as pronounced as I’d like. There are some light spicy notes that could be attributed to the yeast. Light cherry and alcohol are noted on the tail. The alcohol doesn’t smell all that strong. Perhaps 3 years or so has integrated it quite well.

The flavor is good. Definitely a step up from the nose. It does start out with a nice dark fruit flavor. Tastes mostly like raisin. There’s a hint of cherry in there, as well. Light cocoa and very light caramel follow. Belgian yeast is noted, but isn’t very strong. It adds a light spicy character to the overall flavor. There’s a little clove and pepper there. I would like more Belgian yeast though. That’s a little bit of a setback. Alcohol has integrated well over time. It doesn’t seem like 10.5% at all.

Judgment Day has a body that’s on the very light side of medium. It definitely feels too thin. Carbonation is active, but it’s not buzzy. It’s not bad. Just needs a bit more heft. For a big beer, it goes down relatively easy. This bomber’s disappearing quickly.

Judgment Day is a pretty good Quad, but does have its shortcomings. The biggest issues are the light Belgian yeast presence and the body/mouthfeel. If those two issues were addressed, it’d likely be improved. Those aren’t huge problems though. It’s definitely good, and is worth your attention.
