Im not sure if I'm kicking the keg or if this beer pours all head. The bartender says it pours a "little funky." Little lace considering--an initial ring and some spots. The liquid is a dark muddy brown where no light passes.

I smell the equivalent of a junior mint--not sure why. I also detect soy sauce? Perhaps some saltiness?

Many dark elements to the flavor like fudge and bitter chocolate. I'm still tasting mint, mostly in the aftertaste. Neutral body and effervescence.

Look: Pours a nearly opaque medium dark brown. Its bubbly tan head is quick to disappear, possibly due to the high alcohol content.

Smell: The nose is greeted by loads of brown sugar, and yet, this scent does not overpower the pleasant aroma of buttered raisin toast. Compared to other beers of this style, the aroma is nice, yet slightly underwhelming.

Taste: The upfront bitterness is surprising, considering the lack of hops in the aroma. It's nicely accompanied, however, by a mixture of cinnamon and nutmeg sprinkled over plums, dates, and dried cherries. A pinch of pepper and a splash of coffee complete the complex, yet well balanced flavor profile, and to remind us that this is indeed a very big beer, a boozy taste of bourbon is present. A memorable flavor, in the best of ways.

Mouthfeel: Viscous and chewy, but still has a nice, dry finish. Medium-high carbonation adds a nice edgy bite. The alcohol warming is surprisingly light, yet still present.

Overall: This beer doesn't quite give the melodramatic first impression other strong dark ales present, but it still maintains excellent flavor and mouthfeel, while also pulling some nicely unique punches. I would not hesitate to purchase and savor this beer again.

Served on draft at Estelle's in Boston.

Appearance: A one finger mocha head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a murky amber brown color with no vision of anything. Very typical of this style. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Caramelized raisins, figs, rosemary, plums, molasses, spiciness, caramel, toffee,

Taste: Mmm, mmm good. Some bitterness in there too. Alcohol is very deceptive too. Take your time folks.

Mouthfeel: Definitely a sipper. Gets better as it warms up. Full bodied, medium carbonation, a little bitterness, and some nice warm boozy alcohol.

Overall: It's been sometime, been still delicious.
