Pours ink black with a mocha colored foam and pretty lacing. Smell is lactose, bitter chocolate and coffee. Taste is milky goodness, chocolate cake, roasted malts with a creamy mouthful. A fantastic stout.

Shared at the Malt House while waiting for Great Taste tickets.

Dark brown body, nearly black, dark hued with a one finger mocha head with good retention, nice lacing. Smells of chocolate brownies, just the right amount of bourbon, oak, dark fruit, espresso. Rich cocoa. Flavour is similar but with a more pronounced roasted malt and dark fruit presence; cocoa, espresso, whiskey, oak, all adding their contribution. Nice balance; sweet but not cloying; mild earthy, oak bitterness on the backend. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, good carbonation, nice slick feel, easy to drink, no heat. Overall, a very tasty barrel-aged imperial stout that is surprisingly flavourful and drinkable. The price point isn't ideal, but at $14/750ml, it is certainly better than that of its cousin, Older Viscosity which is even more for a 375ml bottle. I would heartily recommend this.

Pours thick and viscous. Pitch black. Dark khaki color head is large and looks quite dense. Head dissipates super slow and leaves heavy sticky lacing behind.

Heavy roasted malt aroma. Earthiness and licorice. Dark, bitter chocolate and espresso. Smoke, black plums, and woody hops.

Flavors are heavy and intense. Smoke and licorice. Dark molasses, dark roasted malt, cocoa powder and bitter chocolate. Earthy, woody hop notes.

Thick and viscous on the tongue. Creamy. Medium carbonation. A touch of acridness with lingering mild bitterness.

This is an excellent beer. Full bodied and packed with flavor. Mouth feel is what really elevates this beer.

This is one of the best stouts that I have ever had.... and I love stouts. Rich chocolate and earthy flavors initially hit your tongue. The alcohol and carbonation is well balanced, with a very smooth, pleasing finish. I definitely want to visit the Lost Abbey tap room soon.

Incredibly smooth, completely masking the elevated ABV. Chocolate comes to mind first, lots of roast grains. Abrupt finish. Bottle share thanks to Jeremy.

Incredible stout poured from the Taps at the Lost Abbey/Port brewing.
Aroma: Strong Roasted malts and hints of vanilla and Alcohol sweetness
Taste: Dark Roasted malt burnt sugar and vanilla
Feel: thick and Viscous perfect for a stout although I'd love to try it nitroed
Overall: Delicous stout in every way and just delicous all around
I think the only thing that would have made this better is if i t was poured in a tall tulip instead of a pint glass but still the best Imperial Stout Ive had

2014 vintage, 750ml cork-top bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours black as night and thick as oil with a creamy dark tan-almost brown head that retains long after the pour, leaving some thick lacing behind

S- strong aromas of charred dark roasted malt leads to notes of campfire smoke, dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, burnt marshmallow, licorice, malted milk balls, dark cherry and a bit of alcohol on the close

T- dark chocolate malt and burnt caramel flavors up front, with smoky charred malt, notes of coffee, green pepper, burnt wood, malted milk balls, and coffee finishing it out, herbal/grassy hop linger with some alcohol

M- thick and viscous body with moderate-low carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that fills the mouth all the way to the finish, alcohol warmth on the linger

O- Big and bold stout with a near perfect creamy mouthfeel, good drinkability considering the ABV

Superb. Absolutely one of the best beers Iv'e had 2015. Haven't done a review in quite some time, this beer deserves one.

Appearance? Poured into a 5oz sniffer is like all Port beers, perfect. Huge aroma coffee and chocolate. Taste massive coffee, chocolate, vanilla notes. Simple yet so flavorful, the mouthfeel is perfect. Smooth, thick, creamy stout deliciousness. Great 32 oz growler. Have to try a bottle to compare.

And not a hint of alcohol in this monster beer. Master brewing.

tasted a 1 yr old bottle. dark brown and totally opaque. sweet aroma. notes of fruit. sweetness and bitter on the tongue but very thin. i like a stout that i can almost chew. overall, a very good stout.

On tap at Mad Mex

Appearance: Black with a one finger brown head. One of the better looking beers iv seen

Smell: i get a lot of coffee, some chocolate, caramel, vanilla, perhaps a touch of dark fruit

Taste: Upfront is a dark, luscious coffee and chocolate, smoke and light dark fruit in the middle, with all flavors finishing together on the palate. I get hop presence and bitterness throughout

Mouthfeel: Heavy medium body; I think the bitterness throughout hides the alcohol.

Overall: This is one big, badass brew. It almost tastes like a barrel aged beer but isnt. Ton of vanilla and smoke. The hop bitterness hides the alcohol well, and i imagine that subsiding tremendously with age, letting the malt aromas come out more. This is one of the better examples iv had, and if not for the hop presence, would be out of this world

Recent snow day offered the perfect chance to drink something new and toasty. Found this Serpent's Stout and decided to break my Lost Abbey virginity. Poured into a standard beer glass, enjoyed at leisure.

A: Poured thick with a pillowy head, a shroud of lacing while being drinked. Black as sin, no light coming through, just like my heart.

S: Dark chocolatey aroma, with hints of smoke from the depths of hell. Knew I would love this beer before even tasting it, living up to the temptation it claims.

T: Thick milky and smooth, with a strong presence of coffee and chocolate. The wonderfully bitter aftertaste left me wanting more, like a tempting woman defiling me and leaving for her next conquest.

O: Love it! I laughed, I cried, my sin nature lashed out and ensared me in a cosmic fall from grace. Totally worth it. Highly recommended for the lover of darkness.

750 ml bottle poured into The Lost Abbey teku glass this beer purchased February 14, 2015

A: Pitch black, no light coming through, nice creamy mocha fluffy head, lovely lacing, lots of tiny bubbles streaming up the glass's side, poured like oil out of the bottle, looks really good.

A: Right up front, big coffee dark chocolate aromas, picking up some slight dark fruit aromas, smells great.

T: Like the nose, big coffee dark chocolate flavors, getting some dark fruit flavors in the middle, finishes with a lingering coffee chocolate bitterness, tastes great.

M: Nice creamy medium mouthfeel, very fluffy, almost Belgian quad like, finishes with a really dry coffee like mouthfeel.

O: Very impressed. I've tasted about 4-5 Lost Abbey beers within the last month and all but one has impressed me. Serpent's Stout falls in this category. This is a big coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruit, dry finishing stout. Very drinkable for 11%. Definitely going to pick up a few bottles to cellar. My only complaint is that I wish Lost Abbey would package their beers in 4 or 6 packs.

Pitch black look with a four finger head. Lacing is pretty weird. Initial taste explodes my mouth with fruity flavor with a subtle coffee and chocolate taste. I sense some tart fruits like berries and figs. On top of that, the alcohol is extremely well hidden. The only problem is that the alcohol is very present at the finish

Shared this with a few friends last night. I was impressed! Delicious, easy-to-drink and smooth. I also got some sweetness from this, but just the right amount. This is well-balanced.

Look: An opaque brown so dark, it's practically black. The tan head is gargantuan, its smooth, foamy top resting upon a mountain of golden bubbles. This beer even looks big, i.e., its appearance alone promises lots of complexity.

Smell: Smells of luxury chocolate truffles--how's that for decadent? Dark fruit aromas are reminiscent of plums and cherry cordial. Roasted, smoky malt creates a meaty earthiness that balances out the sweetness. A delightful bouquet to be sure, but one that could benefit even more from a few more distinct scents.

Taste: A taste that evolves: At first it is both intensely sweet and boozy--maple and brown sugar are taken over the top with a squeeze of caramel syrup, and roughed up by the flavor of vodka. But this intense combination is but a flash in the pan once the roasted malt kicks in, devouring the sweetness and leaving savory smoked jerky in its wake. It's all a bit overwhelming, but for that reason, it's impressive. Certainly something to be sipped slowly and carefully.

Mouthfeel: As chewy and viscous as it looks. Velvety on the tongue. The 11% ABV is confirmed by serious alcohol warming at the back of the throat. Moderate carbonation prevents the body from becoming too thick, and brings a slight dryness to the finish.

Overall: Serpent's Stout is aptly named--this beer is both good and evil. It drives itself to the brink of being too sweet, but is pulled back by smoke and fire in the form of roasted malt and alcohol. It's an overall sensation of being so good it's bad--a dangerous pleasure...forbidden fruit, indeed. In the end, it was almost too much to take, but who doesn't like a little walk on the wild side?

Poured from a 25 oz bomber into a tulip on 05.31.14.

A: 3 finger bubbly tan head which recedes quickly. Midnight black body with no red.

S: Cocoa powder, dark fruit, and licorice.

T: Fig, chocolate, raisin, cherry, and cinnamon toast dominate. Woodiness and a cabernet sauvignon quality are more subtle.

M: Creamy. Very chewy.

O: This was very complex and rich. There was some alcohol burn on the back end. The woodiness was not overwhelming. This was an excellent stout.

One of my top 5 imperial stouts. Goose Island, Founders, Deschutes, the Serpent's and then the placeholder which fits in all the rarer stouts that can't really quantify for lists because they're impossible to get. This Lost Abbey is doing a great job at my only of the beer categories (I'm allergic to most beers but stouts get by passably). My wife's a completely different catagory of beer drinker than me and she swears by Lost Abbey's other offerings as much as I like this stout. Serpent's Tail warms well, I want it warm enough so the flavors expand horizontally and beneath the tongue... at these warmer temperatures, the viscera of the beer really gets turned inside out: the smokiness moves your intestines, you feel fumigations of sweet fruits and the strong alcohol burn. Very rich stout with mellow carbonation. Drink it slowly enough to last a three hour computer session and the flavors keep on unfolding as the imperial burn intensifies. One time I was having one of their bottles and my wife kissed me and she thought I'd been smoking and drinking odd brews with shamans in Peru because of my breath. That's how deep the fermentation goes. Keep it up Lost Abbey.

Discovered this gem in my cellar while cleaning out some near empty beer boxes.
Purchased @ at Julio's Liquors, Westborough Mass on 7/22 for 13.99/bomber. Really, don't ask O.C.D.

As holy as this beer looks on the outside when poured you can see the inside is full of the dark side, almost evil like. When held up to the light I get nothing, just dark matter... A frothy tan curtain covers the top for a minute or two before fading to a thin sheen with bubbles clinging to the sides. Appearance is raw beauty!

The nose is full, rich and roasty. The oak comes in nicely breaking through the dark chocolate barrier revealing even more secrets of licorice, coffee and dare I say the scent of a good cigar, faack.

The taste buds dance over the flavor of dark chocolate, roasted malt, black licorice, burnt sugar and an overlay of vanilla. A very flavorfull example of the style.

Mouthfeel is creamy smooth with a warm feeling of heat quick on it's heels. Mouthfeel is thick and chewy with some bitterness joining the party in the end.

Overall this beer continues to hold my interest. I've been diving into this one for years and feel lucky enough to have stumbled upon one stored properly with a good amount of age. I was surprised to see I hadn't reviewed this in the past but here it is #175...

Poured from 750 ml into snifter. 2013 vintage.

A: Pours midnight black with generous three finger chocolate head that lasted a few minutes. Some nice sticky lacing.

S: Bittersweet chocolate, espresso, raisins, and perhaps a hint of smoke.

T: Dark chocolate, rich espresso.

M: Thick and creamy just like a good stout should be. Finish is lightly sweet and a tad bitter.

O: Quality stout that I enjoyed quite a bit. So far I've been impressed with all of the Lost Abbey stuff.

Pours dense pitch black color with a 2 finger fairly dense dark brown head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, dark bread, smoke, light char, molasses, raisin, plum, light licorice, and roast/smokey earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity and balance of big dark/roasted malt and light-moderate fruitiness; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, dark bread, smoke, molasses, light char, raisin, plum, light licorice, herbal, and roast/smokey earthiness. Good amount of herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, dark bread, smoke, molasses, light char, raisin, plum, light licorice, herbal, and roast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of intense dark/roasted malt, light-moderate fruitiness, and light earthy hop flavors; with an awesome roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and very full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and moderately slick/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely incredible imperial stout! All around amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of intense dark/roasted malt, light-moderate fruitiness, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. An extremely outstanding offering.

Opened: July 2014

This one had a tough cork to pull, but once I got that open with a large pop, the cork was very wet and sticky, even though this had been stored upright for the last year or so.

A: There was an aggressive pour which resulted in a 3 finger tan head with various sized bubbles. The head receded very slowly to a sort of thick film which left nice lacing. I believe that this is black, but it could be very dark brown.

S: The nose was ok, but doesn't compare to the taste. There was some chocolate, some bitterness, some roast. I get a little oak, or woodiness. There is a dash of a sharp anise type smell.

T: Smooth, creamy, chocolate. A brief prickliness from the carbonation. Much more dark chocolate comes through than the nose in a luxurious, velvety way. It is similar to the nose, but the taste was much more intense. There is no alcohol.

MF: In addition to the above, it was creamy and silky. Quite nice.

O: Very nice and very enjoyable with about a year on it.

Pours black with a short-lived head that leaves little lacing.

Aroma: moderately strong and dominated by dark-roasted malts.

Flavor: more funky and less fruity than the aroma, but not challenging to drink. Lightly bitter finish.

Feel: medium body; medium-light carbonation.

O: good, not great. High ABV is too obvious.

This stout was served on tap into a 10oz tulip glass. The head on this beer looked impressive. The beige lacing was sticky, fluffy, and good looking. The smell of this stout was a balance of roasted malt, bitter/dark chocolate, molasses, and something pungent. This stout tastes roasted, sour, and chocolatey, with a weak boozy ending/aftertaste. Mouthfeel = medium/smooth/dry.

Overall, I was not very impressed. When I read Serpent's Stout, I started thinking of something slithery, poisonous, and big. This brew's name mislead me. If it was named The Lost Abbey Snake Stout, I probably wouldn't be as disappointed. As for being a serpent, :(

From the corked, caged bottle dated 12/24/13. Sampled on June 9, 2014.

This has a very dark brown pour to nearly black with a tremendous, foamy, silk tan head. But the head fades after awhile. I used a small glass so the second pour was not as heady.

The aroma has all of the stout characteristics you might expect including dark malts, chocolate, dark fruit, and yeast but it is also boozy.

The body is about as good as it gets for the style with a bold and full texture. Two "5" ratings.

But because of the booze the dark malts and dark fruit tend to get a little buried but this is still an outstanding beer. I should have bought two and tried it 2 years from now when the alcohol bite faded a little.

Reviewing this on my phone, at the bar.

Look: Pitch black, dark tan head. Fades into a ring with slight lacing.

Smell: Dark chocolate, malts, coffee

Taste: Nearly the the same as the smell. Chocolate, coffee, vanilla. Super good.

Feel: Medium bodied, creamy texture.

Overall: Short review as I feel like a douche on my phone. But this is a really good beer. I'm definately going to have to be on the lookout for this in stores.
