Brewed in celebration of Lent and Easter season, Carnevale is light bodied Saison, using Brettanomyces along with Amarillo and Simcoe hops to generate flavor and depth. Carnevale’s complexity grows with time. The citrus notes tend to wane and the wild yeast rears its wonderfully tasting head.

2008 (first release) did not have brettanomyces.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy/opaque pear gold orange body, with a huge frothy head, and spot-patterned, consistent lacing. A very nice looking beer in a tulip glass.

Smell: Perfume-like aroma, very lightly on the front end. Hay. This is perhaps the "cleanest" smelling beer I've ever sniffed. White pepper. Brett on the back end, ever-so-faint. Wow, this is going to be something else.

Taste: Brett, orange rind, a very slight metallic taste, alcohol more prevalent here, and spiciness. This just tastes so clean and light, it's like the ultimate session beer for my tastes. However, the alcohol perceptibility and very slight metallicness detract, admittedly.

Mouthfeel: This is one of the best mouthfeels on a beer I've ever experienced. Just, as I've said, clean, clean, clean. Fizzy. Light. Slick. Wonderful beer to drink, it just *feels* good, and not from the ABV.

Drinkability: The most drinkable beer I've ever experienced. I guess this probably has to do with me not being a huge session beer guy, but it just was a great drinking experience - it's infinitely quaffable, you could have ten of them and it would just fly by.

A: A light golden color with good clarity. An average pour produces a couple of fingers of thick, long lasting rocky head.

S: Moderate orange and pepper aromas with a slight Pils malt aroma. The malt has a little bit of sweetness to it. There is a moderately-light earthy hops aroma and a very light floral alcohol aroma. There is a slight clove aroma to the yeast as well.

T: There is a bit of malt sweetness right up fron which is surprising, but it is quickly over taken by the peppery phenols and moderately-light hops bitterness. There are moderately-strong flavors of light fruits like oranges and peaches. The isn't much hops flavor to speak of but some hops the alcohol still seems to come through with a floral note. The balance is fruity and somewhat bitter with a dry finish. The aftertaste of orange and bitter orange peel.

M: Kind of fluffy with a creamy, light body and high carbonation. Even at 6.5% there is a light alcohol warmth though out.

O: The malt doesn't have much of the Pils character and the bit of sweetness is a little unusual for the style but it comes together well and accentuates the fruitiness. The bitterness has a bit of orange zest character to which lingers a bit in the finish but would pair well with simple preparations of fish like sushi or a pan fried with a light lemon sauce. Does not pair well with marshmallows by the way.

750ml bottle pours into my glass a slight hazy golden orange color with a billowing cap of creamy white head two fingers high. Nice lacing on the side of the glass. Aromas begin with a solid sun kissed wheat grain backbone enhanced by lemon and citrus zest. There's a spiciness present that hints at clove and banana alongside an earthy yeast aspect. Citric, somewhat floral hops lurk in the background. Fresh and vibrant, reminds me of summer.

First sip brings a crisp, lightly toasty wheat grain malt upfront quickly met by a mix of citrus and spice. Lemon and orange zest move into a slightly peppery spice with tasty Belgian yeast accents. Flows down with an earthy tinge and a touch of clove. Mellow hops bring in some bitterness on the finish. Overall a very enjoyable brew.

Mouthfeel is smooth, medium bodied and creamy. Very refreshing with just the right punch of carbonation. This would be a great brew on the beach on a hot day. Overall, a tasty take on a Saison from the Lost Abbey crew. I'm glad I grabbed a bottle of this and wish I had more!

Poured from the corked and caged bomber into a tulip glass.

Flows into the glass a cloudy and lovely orange-gold with lots of bubbly, foamy head that dissipates into some lovely Belgian lace all down the glass.

The aroma is wonderful: The great Belgian yeast as well as some nice fruitiness, a hint of pepper and bread and a nice underlying funk.

This beer tastes great! Love the up-front character of the big Belgian yeast as well as the fruit tastes: peach, apple, a little pear and a bit of sweet orange. Also a nice farmyard funk underneath and a very nice lingering bitter that, I'm assuming, comes from the American hops. Very crisp and tasty. A hint of warming alcohol as well.

Overall, I think this is a wonderful Saison that I would be happy to drink again.

Typical LA presentation, caged and corked w/o freshness info of any sort to be had. Pours moderately cloudy light honey, light tan loose head, leaving clouds of lacing. Floral notes and light pepper in the nose. Yummy typical saison notes, spice, yeast, hops. Pepper up front, drying hops throughout.Minor sour character, add just a bit to the complexity. Major league yeast cake on the bottom of the bottle, leading to an enjoyable yeasty final pour and nutty/yeasty final memory of this offering. Pleasant and worthy creation from Lost Abbey. Bring on the spicy food/BBQ and enjoy this one.

Appearance: cloudy, orange-yellow in color, 1/3 inch head, high carbonation

Smell: pepper, orange, hay, and lemon

Taste: pepper, orange, hay, coriander, and lemon

Mouthfeel: medium carbonation, light bodied, dry, sweet start with a more bitter sour finish

Drinkability:A nice and dry, flavorful saison that is good not great for the style. I do like the flavor combinations. I would get this again, but there are other Lost Abbey beers I would get sooner.

Thanks to kaiser81 for sending me this bottle.

This is the 2009 vintage which was brewed using Brettanomyces. The beer pours a slightly hazy golden color with a white head. The aroma is brett with some citrus. I also get some tartness. The flavor is a nice mix of citrus, spices, Belgian yeast and some brett characteristics. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Pours hazy gold with a short white head. Aroma reminiscent of a German hefe; banana, clove, apricots, and lemon. Clean, light taste that is a cross between a hefe and a trippel. More yeast and clove, but now with bubblegum and spice with a little sugary wheat flavor. I really liked this beer.

Carnevale Ale bears many of the scents native to its Saison-style roots, including Belgian-like orange and coriander, and hints of Saison spiciness. Accompanying these is a strong hint of apple cider, as well as white grape, pear, and lychee nut aromas.

On the tongue, the brew is fruity and spicy, the former coming in waves of orange, grape, pear, and grapefruit, and the latter in hints of coriander and pepper. A good amount of hops nicely balances out the sugars, but remains far enough in the background to avoid detracting from the brew's focus on fruit and spice. The aftertaste is dominated by orange, coriander, and pepper, and lingers on the tongue for quite a while. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is a well-made beer, having been obviously brewed lovingly and with a good amount of ingredients. I'm not sure it necessarily brings anything new to the table, but it is quite delicious.

Somewhat hazy golden and yellow with a thin white cap. Limited lacing down the glass.

Sweet and musty aroma consisting of lemon, barnyard/hay, a little musty funk, and some spice notes: coriander? The aroma on this one, as I've found with a few other saisons served cold from the tap, need to warm up to really express their aroma. When cold, there's almost no aroma whatsoever.

A very well-balanced and highly drinkable saison. All the flavors come together magnificently well: sweet and tart lemon, musty barnyard hay, grass, mild yet biting spice and herb notes (black pepper and coriander).

Medium mouthfeel, though a touch metallic and sharp at times.

A delicious and classic version of a great style.

Checked this out at the SDIBF, like most of the LA releases, glad I had this at a fest rather than dropping a hefty fee. Pours gold, very hazy, great lace retention. Aroma was complex, funky, yeasty and clove-ish.

Taste, the same descriptors as the aroma, a little offputting some of them, would have paired this down a little, tastes like a bunch of flowers and musty.

Reminded me of a hefeweizen with a bunch of hibiscus flowers in it, with some wet dog to round it out.

Caged and cork much like all of the Lost Abbey ales, this is a saison with American hops. Pours a clouded orange golden hue with a bright white head forming thick fine bubbled. No pop when I decorked it but no carbonation issues to speak of. Aromatics spicy peppery notes, herbal citrus qualities as well. A touch of phenolic plastic, hint of band aid. More so tropical fruits like mango and pineapple standout than the off tones. Especially in the flavor the tropical fruits are juicy pineapple and ripened mango with nice cereal malt sweetness. Hints of rounded herbaceous, citric hop character. Sometimes American hops and Belgian yeast strains clash, that's not the case here. Back ground has hints of spicy yeast tones with a black peper kick. Mouthfeel is medium bodied carbonation is effervescent, dry finish nice hoppy saison. Drinkability overall is solid a beer I would like to have access to, I hear local Pittsburgh shops are going to start carrying some Philly brews, namingly House of 1000 Beers.

Pours a hazy yellow-golden color with a one-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of light malts with good amounts of earthy hops. Also present are solid amounts of pears and lighter green apples, backed by slight spices.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Light malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by moderate amounts of pear flavors. Midway through the sip earthy hops come into play and dry things out a bit. Near the end of the sip light spices come into play, carrying through to a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It’s got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I had no problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this was a solid beer but lacked anything to really set it apart. Worth a shot but not worth seeking.

750ml corked and caged brown bottle poured into a flute/tulip. Notes.

A: Pours a glowing orangishs straw color. 1 1/2 fingers of pearly white head that dies slowly to a fat fluff. Nice lacing.

S: Spicy yeast with loads of other spices and some flowery aroma. Light crisp hops and sweet Belgian malts.

T/M: Great bread, earthy, harvest taste. Crisp spicy hops with loads of spices and spicy yeast. The yeast is fantastic. Light body and nice and crisp. Carbonation is great.

D: Very manageable ABV and drinks easy enough. Very tasty and unique.

I popped open this bottle for my girlfriend as she happens to fancy saisons.

It poured a golden straw color til the bottom third where things got very murky with sediment. The aroma was yeast, lemon and wheatgrass. It was well rounded in the taste with a slight clove taste.

For American everyday saisons, I'd take Hennepin esp.since it's a for a couple dollars less. That shouldn't take away from this as being one of the better American versions.

I dig the lable on the 750 ML caged and corked bottle! > Stella glass.

A bright, cloudy and frosty orange-hued golden color with swirling yeast and an initial-super fluffy and dense 2" all-white crown. Dissipates in slow to moderate fashion with plenty of white foam sticking around throughout the duration.

The aroma is that of sour and zesty lemmons, tangy yeast, wet-grass and fresh herbs in the hops. A bit astringent and purhaps overlly tangy.

The flavor has a classic spicey and herbal, earhiness in the hops and a tangy-fruit yeastiness. balance is very good with grassy greens and a light wheat-flavored malt undeneath. Light bodied, refreshing and active feeling with a subtle smooth but dry finish. The 6% ABV adds a sharp warmth.

This is a nice pick-me-up after a hot summer day style brew. The lable is a keeper.

750 mL corked and caged bottle served cool into a etched-bottom globe.

The cork releases with barely a 'pop' but a good pour releases a thick white head. The beer is an unremarkable crystal clear pale yellow. Good retention and lingering lace from the foam.

Aroma is really nice and, like the label suggests, has both saison and american IPA characteristics. A little funk and a little grapefruit.

Flavor is much the same but quite a bit more complex. At first it tastes like one of those candied citrus IPAs with very little bitterness but then it changes dramatically to reveal a sharp peppery Belgian yeast and a strong bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied and well-carbonated. Maybe a little too bubbly but it's still in keeping with the style.

Overall a tasty beer that could be categorized as a Belgian/American IPA - Saison. Now that's a nice hybrid.

2008 edition. This one's carbonation edged off, still a nice summer saison. Light cloudy colour, pleasant spicy odor. Easy mouthfeel, with some caramel, zesty cardamom, orange citrus, pepper, nutmeg, cloves. grassy hops build in finish. Another decent and different Lost Abbey.
2012 edition much better owing to fresh lemony taste and hops n finish.This rating is the 2012.

Poured into my Lost Abbey Teku glass.
A - Pours a hazy golden orange. White soapy head that sticks around and some lacing.
S - Aroma is citrus and yeast.
T - Tastes like a Belgian ale with a peppery bite, a little sour and a slightly bitter finish. No citrus at this point.
M - Dry, light body with a fair amount of carbonation.
O - Very good saison with a little twist. This bottle is almost a year old now and is tasting just like they said it would.

Corked and caged 750ml bottle. Pours an orangish yellow color with a pretty solid head that sticks around for quite a while. The aroma is malt and citrus (most notably oranges), spices and yeast with some hops as well. The taste has a very interesting farmhouse taste that features a very good mixtures of citrus and spices with a good dose of spicy hops in the finish. Wow, this is a pretty kick ass Saison that is very well crafted by the guys at The Lost Abbey. Definitely worth seeking out, highly recommended.

Smell: Floral Citrus and slightly yeasty
Taste: Sweet citrus first then like a bittery funkey fruity slight hop goodness
Mouth Feel: Its light and perfectly carbonated
Drinkability: defendantly a lovely beer to drink would have been great if I aged it to cool off on a hot summer night.

Carnevale pours a gold color. There's a slight haze clouding it, but it's not heavy. Plenty of light cuts through brightening its appearance. A light cream colored cap tops it off. It reaches around two fingers deep and is very slow to recede. Lacing was moderate. All in all, it's a nice looking beer.

The nose is good, but seems just a bit underpowered. It's very fruity. Apple, pear, and lemon announce their presence early. It's somewhat musky and earthy, but that aspect is rather subdued. It has a rather prominent herbal smell, though I can't identify the specific herbs or spices. Yeast is noted. It has enough Belgian resemblance to get by, but it's not as strong as I'd like. Alcohol is blended very well and isn't noticeable. Not too surprising for a 6.5% beer. It's good. A little more muscle and Belgian yeast would improve it quite a bit.

The flavor profile is on-par with the nose. It's a little fruity and sweet initially. Apple, lemon, and pear are the most prominent fruit flavors. It's herbal and spicy, but I can't do much better with identifying them here. There's a little pepper and clove. Suffice it to say it's a good blend that works well with the fruit flavors. Yeast is noted, but it doesn't have the strong Belgian yeast flavor it needs. What is here isn't bad, it's just not quite what it needs to really shine. There's a little alcohol, but not much. For a beer of its stature, it's spot-on. It finishes with an herbal taste that's somewhat dry.

Carnevale has a light body that inches toward medium with a little warming. It's nice and smooth. Carbonation is active, but the bubbles seem light. Drinkability is good. The flavor here is quite good. Not far away from special. It goes down easy and the abv is not scary at all. I'm enjoying the 750 quite a bit.

Carnevale is a very solid release from Lost Abbey. It's not in the upper echelon of their release, but it is quite good. Personally, I'd like a more pronounced Belgian yeast flavor. That would easily ratchet up the score for me. But, that really is nitpicking. Carnevale's a really good Saison that's well worth checking out.

Pours half finger of head on a clear light golden colored body.
The aroma is smokey applesauce, soap, lemon and pear all mixed up in a nice way.
The taste is sharp, approaching bitter. Retains bright fruit: apple and pear.
Crisp texture with moderate carbonation.
Pleasant and enjoyable.

This is a review of the 2009 version, which was "spiked with brett." I had previously enjoyed the 2008 quite a bit. 750ml bottle from K&L Redwood City. I had heard some questionable things about this beer, but I thought it was great!

Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a one-finger white head.

Aroma is rather funky and bretty. Some sweet malt and floral hop notes come through as well.

Flavor is mainly slightly sweet pale malt and bretty funk. You get some of the normal Belgian yeast in there as well, which lends a nice green apple quality. Some pepperiness, but not as much so as in the 2008.

Somewhat dry and crisp on the palate with medium body and fairly lively carbonation.

A very nice beer overall. I had no problem taking down the whole 750 and enjoyed every sip.
