On tap at Pizza Port Solana Beach - served into a 12 oz tulip glass.
Pours a dark red brown color. Once it warmed up the smell was of cherries and tart flavors - at first the aroma was rather weak. The taste was not as sour as I had anticipated. There were definitely sour cherry overtones at the beginning but they were overlaid on top of a very nice malty finish with some dark candi sugar as well.
I had planned on having this and then the Deschutes XXI that was on tap but I enjoyed this so much I decided to have another being that I might never see it again. An extremely pleasant experience altogether.

On tap at the Lost Abbey night at Pizza Port Solana Beach on 8/5/09. I showed up alone to the typical packed night at Pizza Port, and luckily I was eventually joined by fellow beer geeks. This beer is Lost and Found aged in bourbon barrels for over 6 months and soured, with cherry juice from Cuvee de Tomme.
The beer appears tawny with an orange tinge near the edges of the glass. A myriad of tiny bubbles shoot skyward toward the frothy and creamu beige head. The head exhibits excellent retention, and the lacing is very impressive, coating every side of the glass as it recedes.
It took nearly 20 minutes, but finally the beer warmed to an adequate temperature. The nose is dominated by sour cherries and bourbon. Brett provides some mustiness, but it's quite restrained. The malt is bready, with notes of caramel, raisins, vanilla, tannins, and grapes. The marriage of cherries and bourbon is reminiscent of Cuvee de Tomme.
The flavor is similar to the nose, but tarter than I anticipated. The bourbon is stronger in the flavor than it was the aroma. The beer has notes of freshly baked bread and vanilla, with tart cherries and oak. Prominent notes of caramel are apparent, with lesser notes of toffee. The flavor gets better as it warms, and bourbon become more apparent as hints of chocolate become evident. The finish is dry and tannic with a touch of sweetness and a lingering tartness. The alcohol is very well hidden.
The beer is medium bodied with medium draft carbonation and a dry, silky, creamy mouthfeel.
Pizza Port kept the "secret keg" pretty quiet, but I'm glad I stopped by for the Lost Abbey event. This beer was very good when it warmed up and I'm glad I was able to try the second incarnation of JAB.

I had about 2 ½ pints of this tonight (August 5, 2009) at the Solana Beach Pizza Port- Lost Abbey event. I got here a bit late but was still surprised to see this one on tap and Tomme still hanging around talking to people. Tomme mentioned that this beer is Lost and Found, aged for at least 6 months in 2nd fill bourbon barrels, with sour cherry juice added. I was not really sure what style to put this under but since the first "Just Another Barrel" is labeled American Wild Ale, I will put this one under that same category.
Poured into a Lost Abbey tumbler glass. The beer was a dark mahogany color, really dark brown with some crimson red edges, and an impressive inch of foam that showed some great retention and lacing. Really, it was a nice looking beer. There was pretty much a layer of white head throughout the longevity of the beer and thick lacing on the glass, it almost looked like whipped cream on top.
The aroma consisted of tart cherries, oak, toast, hints of the dubbel malt base, and a very light funk. Very fruity once it warmed up, the base beer started to reveal itself stronger when it opened up. Some grape skins, apples, vinegar, and vinous qualities also.
The taste was great from the first sip. Tart cherries upfront with some fruitiness in the middle, apples, oak, vanilla, and bits of bourbon in the finish. Nice dryness in the finish. Good acidity, some grape skins and green apple flavors. Very nice combination of tart cherries and dark fruits with some Belgian type maltiness in the middle. Some vinegar started to show up as the beer warmed up, as well as a stronger bourbon flavor.
The carbonation was on the low side but suited the beer very well. Almost creamy on the palate with a little heftiness in the beginning.
The first pint went down quite smoothly, but the next pint and a half took me a bit longer to drink...I did have a few beers before this one so I was feeling quite full near the end. Really glad I go to try this as this is "Just Another Barrel" and will not likely be seen again.
