Went down to Lost Abbey today and found some more of this delicious brew and decided it was time to review.
375ml bottle into Chimay glassware. Cork was stuck due to the new corks and corking machine but easily fixed with corkscrew. No gusher here.
A- Murky reddish brown very nice light pink/white 2 finger head with nice retention and lacing. Very nice glass of beer.
S- As soon as I uncorked this beer it smelled like raspberry candy in my kitchen. Basically all sweet raspberry smells with a slight raspberry flavored sour candy on the back with some nice dry acidic oak finish. I also get like a faint vanilla flavored tootsie roll on the back end, very light as stated in a previous review.
T- Immediately sweet raspberries and sharp carbonation and acidity that moves to a sour lemonish/raspberry flavor. Finishes dry with lots of oak and again with a mild sour vanilla flavor, like a vanilla flavored warhead. Taste didn't quite live up to the smell, but still very nice and interesting.
M- Very light and high carbonation that makes this highly drinkable but I believe that the smell was much more what I was looking for, but still good none the less.
D- Easy to drink and enjoy, awesome nose and a good taste to this beer make it quite enjoyable.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad – 06/28/2014
Full pour – Belgium Tulip glass
A: Dark nut brown amber body with some maroon like tones. Murky look however with a bubbly carbonation visible and feeding into a nice thick off white head. Great retention displayed here along with some light streamers of stick that run the glass in a broken track manner.
S: Smells of sour cherry with a raspberry balsamic vinaigrette. Cidery and acetic. I would say it is more vinegar than fruit here. There is some malt sweetness there and a subtle damp woodsy musk to it. Very nice but I would have liked some more pronounced raspberry in the nose. Perhaps the bottled version will reveal more here.
T: Heavy on the sour cherry and balsamic vinegar with layers of browned malts mixed in providing some savory balance to all the sourness. More so than most wild ales I have sampled so far but it works really well here. I only get some muted raspberry puree in the background which is a little disappointing. Although it does taste ripely fresh it just seems the Flanders Red character wins over. Has a healthy sourness however it’s not bracingly so with just a touch of lactic acidity there. Not incredibly funky at all really. I get some oaky tannins and a touch of green earthy hop bitterness mid way. Has a great balance to it and the alcohol is kept well disguised throughout. Finishes with a tinny metallic note and a flourish of fruity sourness.
M: Moderate fill with plenty of frothy carbonation from the tap. Good sour pucker on the palate with a nice drying at the finish. Light tannin astringency. Fairly clean and balanced in body.
D: Still just starting to explore Wilds but this was a real nice find on tap. A little heavy on the vinegar but with some great sour cherry and raspberry notes and just the right amount of acidity. Probably won’t be my most favorite sour ale but has some great balance and depth of character. One of Lost Abby better concoctions I would say. Makes me a little less gun shy to go grab some bottles now.
