Framboise de Amorosa is our first foray into the world of raspberry beers. It begins as Lost and Found ale and is sent into freshly emptied red wine barrels. The beer spends over a year in the wood during which time it is spiked with three additions of raspberries.

The first sip produces a sweet start with a long drawn out sour finish. Some of the sweetness from the raspberries comes out before acidic notes join the mix. On the back end of the beer is a smoothing oak character which keeps the beer from becoming dull.

Served from bottle at FoBAB.

Pours a nice deep clear ruby red with purplish head. Nose is pungent with bright notes of raspberry. Heavy fruit paired with some balsamic vinegar notes present on nose with some mild earth at the end. The taste is a slightly tamed down version of the nose. Raspberries are all over the place balancing between fruity sweetness and acidic tartness. Moderate carbonation with a somewhat fizzy mouthfeel. Overall, this was one of the highlights for me at this years FoBAB. The balance is great and the raspberry character is strong. (560 characters)

Pours a brownish red haze, off white head that dies down slow but not rapidly, has nice carbination and smells tart like raspberries and cherries. Taste is sour, not quite puckering with a mouthfeel a little thicker than other framboise, upfront sour to raspberries to an almost caramel malt, maybe a little barrel? This one goes down quick and I definitely appreciate the higher abv in regards to the style. A lot of raspberry, acid going on balanced with the barrel on the back end. (484 characters)

Poured into a crystal red wine glass

A: Pours a slightly murky reddish brown with a two finger head that froths up and recedes to an even thin film after a few minutes.

S: Tart raspberry, vinegar, oak. Sour fruits and honey.

T: Sharp tartness up front, immediately supporting a bouquet of both sour and sweet fruits alike. Tart raspberries and an acetic vinegar pucker you up at first, but then give way to a sweet raspberry and oaky serenade that makes you forget how much your rectum just clenched. An initial jolt of sour and acidity that is immediately rounded out by a subtle fruit sweetness and a mellow oak and honey in the middle, maybe even a hint of chocolate. The vinegar comes back towards the finish though, and the experience ends puckeringly sour and wet, leaving an acidic tang.

M: Slightly sticky and a mellow carbonation. Definitely not flat abbey style, they got this one just right.

O: Really enjoyed this one. Seemed to get more sour as the glass got lower. I was in the mood for a complex and very tart sour, and oh boy did I get one. Good job Tomme and friends, yet another keeper. (1,113 characters)

A-Pours a deep, dark ruby/crimson. Thinner head is pleasantly pink but is sadly crumbles upon itself and leaves thin remnants.

S-Concentrated raspberries. Jammy yet tart. A mix between sweet berry and unripe berry. The oak is just as impressive. It plays along with the raspberries. Tart raspberry strudel. There is a lingering earthy/dirt element to the nose too.

T-I am a raspberry lover. This is a killer raspberry sour. The tartness is clearly there but I am just as impressed with the ripe/sweet raspberry notes. Sweet and sour raspberry and even blackberry combo is delectable. Then comes the sneaky okay notes which only further serve the overall flavor. As it warms I get a really neat chocolatey note as well. Reminds me of a Flanders Oud Bruin.

M-Has some body to it. No booze. Tartness sticks to my lips. A bit sticky.

O/D-One of my more sought after beers. What a beaut! I feel very happy 'unchecking' this from my Wants list. Jesus, I love raspberry sours. (973 characters)

375mL bottle. 2011 vintage. Previously tried at a tasting where 2/3 of the bottle was lost to gushing. Do remember it was a pretty yummy 20mL..

After resorting to a bottle opener to salvage the sheared cork, pours a glowing mahogany amber with a large but airy ochre head that falls with audible speed to a collar. Decent bead. Looks lovely.

Nose has a gorgeous leathery tartness which contains the abundant raspberry presence nicely. The raspberry character is juicy, almost sweaty, but far less pungent than it would be without the oak treatment. Acetic, lemony notes give a hint of the base wild ale.

Flavours are even juicier than the nose augured. Big, leathery, musky sour raspberry notes, and plenty of cherry and tart green apple.

Body has decent heft thanks to the barrel treatment and ABV. Oily at first before the modest carbonation cleans it up and rams home the tartness.

Intelligent balance of wild yeast and fruity excess with the tempering influence of the oak treatment. Loved it. (1,004 characters)

a: it poured a clear ruby red, then the yeast clouded it up. So it's murky, some floaties and a light pink head. Pretty.

s: wow, you get that acidic, tart characteristic that you'd expect from a sour, but it is backed up by an amazing raspberry presence.

t: very sour, almost TOO sour. The sourness starts off very well, then starts to turn into a strange sort of bitterness that follows down your throat. Has a nice flavor though.

mf: high carbonation, could be a little smoother with the balance of tartness and fruit.

Tons and tons of raspberry, and I love raspberry. I may be biased, but this sour is one of the best I've ever had. Very hazy red in color. Smells and tasted of rich, sugary, tart raspberries. Some oak in there as well. A must to try. (802 characters)

"Ale aged in oak barrels with raspberries." 7.00% ABV confirmed. 2013 vintage. 12.7 fl oz brown glass bottle with fantastic label art (Lost Abbey does art best) and hood-and-wire cap (aka cage) over a cork acquired at a local beer store and served into a flared stem-snifter/tulip hybrid glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are through the roof given the brewery and style. Reviewed as a framboise because it identifies as such in the name.

Served cold - straight from me fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

I ended up using pliers to remove the cork; it's wedged in there pretty good. Cork yields a satisfying pop upon removal, and liquid slowly surges upwards - necessitating a pour.

A: Pours a 1.5-2 finger wide head of light pink-white colour. Disappointingly thin, but still frothy. Little creaminess. "Legs" as the head recedes. Retention is above average - about 3 minutes.

Body colour is a dark ruby-red with brownish hues. Nontransparent. Nontranslucent. Some yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Overall, it's not much to look at, but it's to style.

Sm: Definite tart raspberries with a pleasant acetic edge. Marvelous oaky undertones. A bit of plum and unsoured fruit on the back end. Wonderful yeast and bacteria lend it a damn appealing sourness; that's really inviting. Certainly a lively aroma. It's not an inferior framboise with only lactobacillus for sourness; I also get lambicus yeast and spontaneous - if controlled - bacterial notes. A nice sweetness keeps it from coming off too sour. Raspberries dominate, and I love the way the oak complements them. Also getting some light pie crust notes; I can see the Lost & Found base surfacing a bit. A wonderful aroma of fairly high strength. Can't wait to try it.

No hop character or alcohol is detectable.

T: Really tasty and flavorful. Raspberries are prominent with a near perfect presence of tartness and sourness. Has a wonderful acetic body with notes of pie crust and biscuit malt. Also a bit of withdrawn plum in the third act. Sourness/sweetness balance is close to perfect, with a sweet berry quality complementing the sour edge. Nice acidity. Some cherry. I get bacteria, lambicus, and a bit of lacto yeast - all of which work well here. Great integration of the oak barrel as well, with subtle oak guiding the beer and keeping it gestalt. Excellent balance and build for a framboise. Also has superb complexity and subtlety. The rich fruitiness is lovely. A nice blend of ripe fruit with more refined mature berries. Depth of flavour is huge. Flavour duration is high, as is flavour intensity. Really a treat of a beer.

I can't put this one down it's so damn good. My glass is quickly emptying.

No hop character or alcohol comes through. Maltiness is hard to find beneath the sourness - to its benefit.

Mf: Wonderful acidity and bite, with a smooth and wet texture that keeps it refreshing. Very approachable and somehow soft while also puckering. Acetic. Great body and perfect thickness for the style. Carbonation is near perfect - just a biteen overdone, but this will correct with age. Complements the flavour profile wonderfully; the mouthfeel feels custom-tailored to the taste.

Dr: Once again, Lost Abbey demonstrates their mastery over sours. Beers like this explain why Lost Abbey may well be the best brewery in this country. I'd definitely get it again; I just wish the pricetag was more manageable. I'd snap this up on-draught. Obscenely drinkable, and the ABV never comes through. I could drink this all night. Ridiculously good. Lost Abbey's done it again. Aside from the appearance, this is an almost flawless framboise.

Poured a plum, reddish brown color with one finger of gray head when I got it. Light spots lacing on the sides. No retention.

Smelled dark cherries, plum, raspberry, Red-Hooded Slut shot, grape and cranberry.

Tasted even better than the nose. Got raspberry, cranberry, dark cherry, Sweet Tarts and Smarties. So smooth.

Medium body. Oily texture. Average-to-soft carbonation. Long, smooth finish.

I always think this style is good, but this went down easy. So smooth. (649 characters)

Vivacious of white head, dark red robey tones. Good lacing and head retention.

Tart fresh raspberries. Digging the nose.

More raspberries but not too sweet, dry. Would give it a 6 on the sour scale, puckering.

Higher end of carbonation. Full mouthfeel.

a deep burgundy pour almost reminiscent of a port wine, with a thick finger of frothy creme/pink colored head leaving behind thick lacing.. great head retention. the smell is almost vinegar-ish, but i definitely get some dark fruits and berries, some banana as well, and some cedar-like scent. woah what a tart/sour one this is!!! lots of acidic berry-ish flavors mixing in with a ton of wood/barrel taste.. an almost bitter sour hits you immediately after the acidic initial flavor.. this is an incredible sour beer.

medium body with a nice rich creamy feel, high carbonation, and lots of cheek puckering tartness.

i recommend picking this one up. i feel like if i tried this last year i would have hated it, but the more i drink sours/wild ales, the more i can appreciate a beer like this. almost wine-like at times, with a raspberry overall tone, lots of wooden barrel.. lots to enjoy, but again - this is on the vinegary flanders red type style, BUT does have that huge lemony-acidic flavor that overpowers most of everything else! (1,037 characters)

Both 12.7 oz. bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego, CA last week (thanks, John Serra, for directing me here), unknown dating vintage, poured into my FFF Teku tasting g;ass, drank 6/23/13 over one hour.

A: 4.25 - dark ruby red, minimal clarity (can't see or read through), frothy yellow-white two finger dissipates but persists throughout consumption, moderate alcohol legs

S: 4.50 - lots of vinous (especially tannins and aged red grape rind) and fruit (especially raspberry characters)

T: 4.25 - big blast of puckering sour/tart flavors explode into the front of the mouth; as the taste continues, the vinous qualities really kick up with husk, grape and rind flavors; really nice but maybe a little bit overpowering and intense

M: 4.00 - medium bodied, moderate-to-high carbonation, slight alcohol burn, lingering flavors/aromas

O: 4.25 - I'm very glad that I tried this beer picked up on our recent trip to the West Coast; it's a suped-up framboise that I certainly enjoyed; however, I prefer more muted and refreshing flavors from the style (thinking of Lindemann's), and this one was too intense for the style for me (1,137 characters)

Can't believe I found one of these recently. Consumed during the second monthly "Beermageddon" with many others recently. Poured into a tulip glass from a 375ml bottle.

Pours a beautiful, full reddish-ruby color complete with a decent amount of carbonation and a 1 finger worth of pinkish colored head. Lacing sticks everywhere on this thing, and it glows like any fantastic, world class Lambic against the light. There are floaties lingering within the liquid itself, no doubt aided by the wood, and definitely a cloudy, yeasty color that filters through the liquid at hand. Incredibly rustic, and very well put together, if only a bit sludgy overall. However, the color at hand is winning me over, and I'm giving it a high score in this realm.

The aroma is also quite fabulous, consisting of a blend of bright berry flavors, ranging from raspberries, strawberries, and boysenberries, with maybe a bit of blueberries at the finish. As a fan of all wines containing a grape musty, berry forward flavor, this definitely could pass blindly as a good Zinfandel or Tempranillo blend if it weren't for the undeniable woody tannic, brown malty, and slightly soured flavors underneath. Indeed, the other ingredients impart a bit of a nutty, milk chocolate flavor that makes this smell like a chocolate berry liqueur, only to be phased out by the soured, jammy wild aromas caused by the yeast. A hint of acetone and lactic acid lingers about, but luckily the bright berry and marmalade flavors are victorious. Truly an excellent effort by the Lost Abbey here.

The flavor completely throws back the inner bliss experienced by the aroma, delivering a highly acidic, soured, and strangely unpleasant drinking experience. While it wasn't noticeable in the aroma, what appears to be lacking here is a strong malty backbone that makes beers like, say, Supplication such a success. Strange, because I know I detected brown malts in the aroma. In the flavor, you first get bright slightly musty raspberries and strawberries, only to immediately be pelted with an acidic harshness and dryness that numbs the cheeks and burns the back of the throat. This is the equivalent of drinking a soured berry extract without ANY of the residual sugars to fall back upon. There's no creaminess, no breadiness, and especially no finishing character other than sour woody tannins, fruit tartness, and intense acid from what I'm assuming to be Pediococcus. The mouthfeel is super astringent and harsh, and not pleasing at all to the senses. What happened here? The aroma was amazing - where did this go wrong?

I actually felt embarrassed bringing this to the tasting. We did enjoy it for the fruity, tarty flavors, but the acid and extreme sourness provides intensity with no degree of satisfaction in return. I know this wasn't infected or anything, but I simply feel it was horribly unbalanced. If you want to try this, go ahead, but the Lost Abbey definitely has better sours for the same price and availability in their catalogue. (3,007 characters)

Split a bottle with a couple friends. Poured into a wine glass, the appearance is dark red, a little brownish with a small head. The nose has raspberries, vinegar, oak and funk. It really comes with sourness before even drinking it. Upon tipping some back, I taste raspberries, cherries, caramel and some red wine. Mouthfeel has a lot of carbonation, that sourness lingers with you. A great wild/sour beer from a U.S. brewer. I would love if we could get this in Connecticut or even New York. (492 characters)

A - Raspberry colored bodied with a two finger head that has a pinkish hue to it.

S - Raspberry (could interchange cherries here), oak, funkiness and some sugary sweetness on the backend.

T - Whew! Sour/tart raspberries hit you right away. Some sugar fruity notes and oak hold it all together.

M - Lighter bodied and somewhat high carbonation. It has a dry, mouth puckering finish.

O - Excellent sour here! About the only one that can hold a flame to Supplication. (469 characters)

Pours bright copper rusty red. Cloudy as can be. Looks great.

Smells of woody raspberries and tartness with some nice sweetness.

Taste is straight away tart sour dark fruity cherries and raspberries. There's a bitterness I. There that lends well with the sour qualities. Slight maltyness on the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is very sharp. Highly carbonated yet fells very nice and refreshing. Still quite bitey.

Overall this is an excellent sour. If your into the style I'd say you have to try this one. (500 characters)

Appearance – The cork really popped on this one. Pours a dirty raspberry color with a thick frothy dirty white head and huge lacing. Lots of sediment.

Smell – Sour raspberries, red wine, oak, and a hint of raspberry sweetness.

Taste – Sour raspberries dominate the taste. I didn’t notice the sweetness that I detected from the nose. Very dry.

Mouthfeel – Tart, nicely carbonated, with a lingering sour aftertaste.

Drinkability – I think it is a bit too tart to be super drinkable. (496 characters)

On tap at Local Habit in San Diego. The color is dark brownish and murky in the glass-- "swamp water," as DefenCorps calls it, which is right on. A splash of a head and quite a tingly mouthfeel, both from the carbonation and what I suspect is taste buds dying. More of a vinegar smell with a touch of fruitiness.

Tart rather than sweet to start, but hugely berry flavored. Some bitterness for the finish. A slight sweetness creeps in along with the vinegar edge. It does taste just like raspberries, which the brewer says were added again during the year-long wine barrel aging. This is actually quite sippable, though unmistakably a serious sour. (648 characters)

A murky brownish amber with enough clarity to see a few streams of bubbles but I know there's plenty as its hard not to get half a glass of foam even on a gentle pour. massive light brown head with a hint of pink has great retention and completely cakes my glass in lace, still a think film at the bottom of the glass and lace right to the bottom, looks perfect

S I get more cherry then the raspberry the used making it, perhaps a little strawberry in there too, quite funky with lots of oak and cheese and vinous notes, pretty sexy nose

T tart, sweet and sour at the same time but less of the funky notes and the fruits mellowed, still great but missing just a little something the nose had going for it

M a little pucker and a little grit left behind, almost foamy from the bubbles but creamy after a second in your mouth with a sour oak finish

O pretty solid sour that looks perfect, smells great and solid everywhere else. My only complaint is that my glass was empty before I really figured it out

I can see why Lost Abbey has the reputation for brewing great sours and I can't wait to try some more (1,228 characters)

The beer pours a dull, yeast speckled, hazy light brown with a thin tan head. The nose is sweet with potent oak and raspberries. The taste is slightly funky, followed by tart raspberries, a caramelized sugar sweetness, and a semi-dry, lingering raspberry cake finish. Great malt presence that serves to accentuate the dark fruitiness of the raspberries. The mouthfeel is solidly medium bodied, slightly bready, with great oaked fruit character, and a slightly salty, dry finish. Very enjoyable beer that's completely worth the effort to obtain. (582 characters)

I expected the beer to gush like mad, but strangely, I needed a corkscrew to pop this bad boy. The beer itself is a hilariously ugly murky swamp water brown,capped with a short-lived beige head. The nose is bright, frothy, jammy, fruity raspberries, very bright and stunningly expressed. Not particularly seedy/tannic, the fruit character is excellent here. The sour base beer is actually tempered by the fruit. It does, however, have a mild acetone character, along with some lemon and key lime. Mildly yeasty as well.

The palate opens bright, fruity and sharp. Jammy raspberries, minimally seedy, with a little bit of strawberry character as well, the fruity expression is excellent. This is followed by the sour base, where the lactic acidity pairs quite well with the fruit. There's also a hint of lemon as well as some acetic character. A little frothy/yogurty as well, the mid-palate is a little chunky/yeasty. Some oak tannins are present, rather well-integrated with the profile. The finish is strongly lactic, scrubbing the palate, almost a little too much, leaving a clean, yogurt sourness and flavor along a clean raspberry sourness. It does, however, feel a little watery. Medium-medium light in body with moderate carbonation, the softness/fullness that the yeast/proteins lend does clash with the brightness of the fruit, but ultimately, I'd say this is one of the better American brewed raspberry sours I've had. 12.7 oz. corked bottle at about fridge temp poured into a snifter.

Pours a muddy, cloudy dark red almost brown, off white head,, about a 1/4 inch or so. Decent spotty lace. Good head retention.

Sugary, funky fruit, raspberry a bit in the background, sweet tart, a bit of barnyard funk.

Very nice, sweet sugary raspberry, sweet almost caramel oaky like malt in there, just enough funk, more barnyard, finishes sour.

Medium to light in body. A touch of sweetness that's cut by a fair amount of sourness. Not intensely sour like some can be.

Very nice, raspberry a bit hidden, more of a Flanders style beer with abit of sweet malt in there. (645 characters)

Cloudy red-brown colour with a long lasting creamy tan head. Great lacing.

Lots of fruit with the raspberry being noticeable. Tart and funky and just a little sweet.

Tart. Fruity as well with some lactic notes. Nice raspberry character. Touches of mint. Great.

Medium light body with high carbonation. Appropriate.

Poured from a 375ml bottle of the 2012 vintage, into a duvel glass

A: pours brown with some deep redish tits and a slightly redish, tanned head. Two fingers worth of frothy head dissapate nicley to a film leaving some nice spots of lacing.

S: loads and loads of raspberry tartness, tartness has an acidic quality to it... Also a little bit of funk in there with some nice earthy wooden oak notes, this smells phenomenally delicious. Like a sour raspberry slush puppy.

T: equally impressive, wonderful notes of raspberry and acidic citrus tartness, hint of lemon, and tart dark cherry and green apple skins... A touch of funk mixed in with some earthy oak bringing a nice kiss of bitterness, this is wonderfully balanced.

M: medium bodied with very active creamy and aggressive carbonation to give this a lush and slightly spritzy mouthfeel, dry and a touch puckering in this finish, leaves an aftertaste that reminds me of sweet trarts.

O: this is a phenomenal sour... I'm not even usually a fan of framboise, bit the tartness and balance on this one are superb, one of my favorite sours hands down. (1,104 characters)

Last beer I had at Capones black friday event.

A- A very pretty looking brew. Poured a deep purple color, with mohagony and red highlights. There was decent lacing left down the sides of the glass.

S- Tart and acetic aroma. Somewhat funky but not a lot. Sour raspberries of course, and even a bit of vinegar.

T- Fairly tart brew here. Slightly sour but not so much as the nose would lead you to believe. The raspberries give a nice flavor throughout and linger somewhat. The acidity of this beer is digesting my enormous Thanksgiving meal from the day before quite nicely.

M- Light to medium bodied brew, and highly carbonated. Way to go Tomme.

O- Overall this makes a great sour. The sourness and raspberry flavors are balanced very well. It's not overly sour or funky. Highly drinkable. (795 characters)
