On Tap

Lost Abbey
San Marcos, CA

Clear golden yellow with a touch of copper. Medium sized white head with spots of lacing left down the glass.

Not an overly aromatic beer but what's here is nice. There's lots of bready and biscuity malt character along with a grassy hop character.

Bready and biscuity flavor with a bit of grass and hay. There's just a bit of spicy black pepper as well. Simple but tasty and incredible drinkable.

Crisp, light to medium bodied, plenty of carbonation. A joy.

A delicious, simple, clean, refreshing lager.

On-tap @ Blue Palms Brewhouse - served in a pilsner glass.

Very pale gold, quite clear, with a whisper of fine ivory foam that recedes at once to a barely extant ring.

Light almost biscuity malt and vague grassy/herbal (noble?) hops in the nose. Pils malt is very clean and there is none of the expected DMS here.

The flavors follow the nose - somewhat sweet, light malt, and a low spicy bitterness from hops. The finish and aftertaste seem to concentrate and emphasize the flavors - leading you back for another sip which is mildly disappointing in contrast.

Light bodied with average carbonation. A bit insubstantial even for the style.

Refreshing and a good starter/session ale on a hot day; otherwise, nothing special.

A: The pour is a pale golden-yellow with a fluffy white head.

S: Quite light on the aroma. A bit of biscuity and bready malt to provide some sweetness. There is a light spiciness which seems to be in the form of coriander.

T: A bit heavier on the bread and malt qualities to give this beer some actual flavor. The sweetness is mildly contrasted by some spicy hops and a moderate bitterness.

M: Light in body with a crisp, clean carbonation--just like you would expect from a Helles Lager.

D: Certainly easy enough to drink down on the warm Southern California days that are here and that shall continue throughout the summer.

Served on-draught into a taster glass at Lost Abbey's taproom. Cost was $1.00 USD. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours a half finger beige colour head of some cream, nice thickness, and fair retention. Colour is a clear yellow. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Pale malts, clean malts, lactose, clean barley, some spice, and straw.

T: Clean barley forms the body. Straw. Clean malts. Pleasant refreshing lactose. Crisp. Definitely a helles; I like it, but it's simple. Subtle for the style - just as you'd expect from Lost Abbey. A tasty little lager.

Mf: Smooth, clean, and wet. Suits the flavours near perfectly. Slight rough coarseness drags the flavour out in the second act. Good carbonation.

Dr: Very drinkable. I could down this one all night. A refreshing enjoyable little helles. Well priced as well. This would be a good one to get a keg of for a party, and it's one hell of a session brew, but it's too simple for me to want to enjoy again. Still, I'm glad I tried it and it's impressive what they've done with the style. Another solid offering from Lost Abbey.

On tap at Lost Abbey. Pale golden with a creamy white head. The aroma is of slightly sweet grainy malt and a light spiciness with subtle grassy notes. The flavor is grainy malt with a low level of sweetness and an upper low level of bitterness. The finish is crisp and clean. The beer is light bodied with a dry and crisp mouthfeel. A quality lager and a good interpretation of a classic style.

The beer is on the low carbonation side, with very little head which goes away almost instantly. The smell is a nice aroma of a bit of yeastiness but more strongly smells to me of piney spiceness from the hops.

Taste: It has a nice smooth start, then I get a little of the hops, not strong, but enough to add some depth in flavor and make it not too sweet. It has a nice smooth finish. To me has a very nice balance, making it not too sweet not too bitter. Perfect for this time of year, with some warmer weather.

Drinkability: A+ I could drink this beer for multiple glasses without complaint.
