Formerly known as "Serpent's Stout - Bourbon Barrel Aged With Cocoa Nibs & Coffee"

A fresh track, Track 10 began as a fresh Serpent’s Stout base aged in bourbon barrels with oodles of coffee and cacao nibs added shortly before packaging.

Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included.

We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 pounds of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 pounds of TCHO Cacao Nibs to steep before packaging.

Definitely sat on this one too long. Drank 2022, bottle dated 2016. Low on carbonation, thin, not much bouquet and not really a distinctive taste. The low carb, based on the age, killed it for me, but I'm betting it was much better in it's time so I tried to be forgiving with the taste, smell and overall rating.

From a bottle. No visible date. Enjoyed Halloween, 2021.
Pours the color of midnight and motor oil, with no discernible foam. The aroma is light, and the sip follows, with a slight hint of a fresh cup of coffee and some mellow ash on the back end.
For such a big beer, the body is surprisingly thin—and silky smooth, with no discernible burn from the alcohol.

Extremely smooth beer, zero head with a nice bourbon smell, great mouthfeel, almost chewy. Overall this beer has held up extremely well.

Poured from a cork'n'cage 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Inky black pour with thin barely-there off-white head. Minimal lacing.

S: Roasted grains, chocolate, and espresso. Lighter vanilla.

T.F: Rich and roasty. Semi-sweet dark chocolate to start with burned sugars. Espresso... booze, char, and vanilla. Warming... the ABV is hidden but you feel it after sipping awhile. Medium to thick bodied. Loads of cocoa. Creamy and smooth. More complex as it warms.

O: An elite big boozy bourbon barrel stout. Great mix of flavors... perfect for a cold night by the fire.

Pours a thin dusting that barely covers the surface before drifting off, thin line at the surface when the glass is tilted. Jet black liquid, looks clean. Licorice, dark chocolate, German chocolate cake fill the nose, more boozy than roasted, has a medicinal edge like witch hazel, mild nuttiness, any fruit presence close to plum or even prune. Fizzy than expected, surprises you and once you adjust it settles into a muscular fullness, not heavy but super-dense. The toast elevates here and there’s a broader sense of the barrel spiciness. Likewise there’s a palpable blueberry, blackberry jam element. The chocolate has just enough bitterness to avoid cloying sweetness. More of an American roast feel than Vienna or French in the coffee component. Vanilla bean and caramelized brown sugar top it off. Does an admirable job of straddling the line without going over and never seems to flaunt the barrel aging.

An outstanding barrel aged imperial stout. Doesn't have the cloying sweetness of some more recent offerings. Well balanced, relatively little alcohol burn and nice integrated chocolate, coffee and vanilla flavors with a little burnt sugar. Will be picking this up whenever I can find it. Need to take time over it - for relaxing and savoring.

12.7 oz bottle poured into a snifter.
The pour was jet black in color, light steaminess popped out of the bottle. In the glass, I'd say this was more of a dark brown color. I heard a little bit of fizz roaming in the quickly dissipating head. This didn't leave any lace.
The aroma had an absolutely amazing blend of sweet coffee beans with a moderate roast, cocoa powder sweet dryness, sweet barrel woodiness while allowing a quaint spicy earthiness to roam in underneath.
The flavor had some bourbon barrel sweet to spicy hints. Then a dusty cocoa nib taste while some roasted coffee bean tones play with the balance very nicely. Mild aftertaste of sweet and roasty sticky woody cocoa nib character.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fine sipping quality about it. Good carbonation and some smoothness balancing with some sticky milk chocolate layers. Finishes earthy with some sticky yet somewhat thin chocolate characters on my tongue.
Overall, pretty damn nice imperial stout, great Friday night cap.

Pours a thick pitch black. No head when poured from the bottle, however, there's a bit of a carbonation ring around the edge of the glass that is tan looking.
The nose is quite rich and deep. I get a lot of barrel in the nose. I also get hints of chocolate, and coffee, but the barrel is the star of the show.
Taste - Wow! There's a good deal of chocolate, and coffee on the back side. The barrel flavors (and I know I'm terrible at describing it) is mixed throughout. I get a bit of a licorice flavor in this beer.
This is thick, and full bodied. There's very little alcohol burn from this beer.
Just a totally solid, amazing beer.

A - Pours a thick pitch black with a very thin tan head. Very light spotty lacing.

S - Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee and bourbon.

T - The taste is coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, dark fruits and bourbon.

M - Full body with medium carbonation. Syrupy mouthfeel with a soft dry finish.

O - Killer BA stout. The flavors are spot on. The alcohol will sneak up on you so it's definetly a slow sipper.

375 ml. bottle.
Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 1/2 inch tan head over a black body with little lacing. Nose of caramel, vanilla, cocoa, coffee, and bourbon. Taste mirrors nose somewhat because it takes it to the next level as in flavors of bitter chocolate, unsweetened chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, oak, and bourbon. Near silky feel finishing with a bit of dark fruit sweetness, milk chocolate, and bourbon. As it warms, coffee comes through on the finish as well. Overall, an awesome experience for me as BBA Impy Stouts are my fave and this one is right up there with the greats. Cheers!

Didn't realize when I went to review but this will be 700. Wife got this for me when she went to San Diego last month. The label, as with all of Lost Abbey's labels is pretty amazing, lots of intricacies.

A&S: when popped, I noticed that there was a lack of carbonation. It poured thickish and black. The head had a reddish tint to it and dies out pretty quick. A ring of head, along with some specks, remains after a minute or two. The aroma consists heavily of bourbon and vanilla with hints of cocoa. Not getting any of the espresso in the aroma.

T&M: The immediate taste is bourbon. Also not getting a ton of coffee in the taste. After a little while, you get a surge of milk chocolate and cocoa in the aftertaste, along with some bitterness you would typically get from a hot brew of coffee. Extremely thick when it comes to mouthfeel (more than it would appear based on the pour. It really hangs around.

Overall: I can't speak to the price, but it is a good beer overall. Nothing mindblowing or complex (in my opinion), but also it is a very well made beer like all of Lost Abbey's stuff. Great way to finish tonight.

Best damn Lost Abbey I've had and worth the cost to try once for sure. It was black as the night with little head but a wonderful aroma and the coffee and nibs rode the bourbon nicely.
