Formerly known as "Serpent's Stout - Bourbon Barrel Aged With Cocoa Nibs & Coffee"

A fresh track, Track 10 began as a fresh Serpent’s Stout base aged in bourbon barrels with oodles of coffee and cacao nibs added shortly before packaging.

Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included.

We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 pounds of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 pounds of TCHO Cacao Nibs to steep before packaging.

375ml bottle poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass

A: Pours like a glass of dessert, all dark brown swirls and a nice mocha head that never fully disappears.

S: Amazing nose, sweet bourbon notes of vanilla, toasted coconut and marshmallow, followed by the roast and cocoa. Some definite dark fruit (raisins, mostly) notes. Can't wait to taste.

T/M: First taste, excessively sweet, the coffee is hidden until the end, when it reminds me of the remnants of a mocha-laden espresso drink. Very prevalent hints of vanilla and chocolate, with just a touch alcohol burn to remind you that it's 12%. Perfect feel, thick and chewy as a beer like this should be. More alcohol burn as it warms.

O: A really excellent BA stout, though no question of its ABV, and for a beer with coffee it's somewhat lacking those flavors. All-in-all though, a very good beer.

On tap at the Publick House in Boston, MA.

This one pours a deep, dark, glossy-looking black, with a small, filmy quarter-inch head, and not a whole lot of lacing.

Smells super wonderful, tons of chocolate, rich, dark, and slightly sweet-smelling, with roasty coffee, and a big meaty bourbon character.

This is one of the best BA stouts I've ever had. Definitely flies under the radar. The chocolate is the star for me, really tasty, slightly sweet, but roasty bittersweet, with some cocoa powder and some nutty roasted coffee, and a lot of sweet bourbon. There's a little bit of caramel, but it's definitely not too sweet here, as the roasted, nearly charred malt character really balances out the sweet components.

This is thick bodied, with a creamy, full, and quite expressive mouthfeel. The carbonation is low, just there enough to keep this one very drinkable.

This is was amazing. I really want to get a bottle of it to try now.
