375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - No head, save a few bubbles. Deep red and mostly clear.

Smell - Fruity. Not sure I'd called it grapes. Strange chemical aroma. Very off-putting.

Taste - Much more grape-y. Slightly tart, but not really all that sour. Musty and bretty. A little medicinal.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation. Light sourness, more brett than anything else.

Overall - Lots of grape in the flavor, but I would like it to be more sour.

Edit: A second try of this beer was much more sour and pretty nice. Numbers improved to reflect.

Thanks to Todd for sharing the entire box set. What an evening! Served in a snifter of some sort I think.

A - Off-white foam settles to a collar, leaving behind a few stray wisps. Transparent amber body.

S - Grape skins, mild malt sweetness, very lactic, with a Flanders brown sort of vibe to it. Some earthy and dirty brettanomyces, heavy oak, and mild vanilla in the periphery.

T - Taste is more sour and vinous than funky, with a heavy lactic influence and some mild vinegar as well. Acidic grapes and oak, a bit of tangy, musky brey, and a late jammy sweetness. Finish is evocative sour candy.

M - Super dry, tannic, and quite tart and puckering. Pleasant lower carbonation, medium body, and some unexpected lingering stickiness in the finish.

D - A solid American sour that might grow fatiguing in large doses but is enjoyable in this smaller format. I'd drink it again, but wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

Look: Deep ruby, slight haze, thin lacing, drops quick

Smell: Phenolic, strong medicinal, acidic, vinous, berries, bready, oaky

Taste: Tart berries, young plums and skins, vinous, grape, tannic, spice, oak, crisp and thin, dry, woody linger

A damn tasty Brett beer aged with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, but for me it's missing some malt body and mouthfeel.

12.7 brown corked and caged bottle, no freshness date.

Slightly hazy reddish brown hue, very thing lacing dissipates to an even thinner ring around the glass. Smells of dank phenols, anise, wood, vinous twang, ripe apricots, and estery grapes. Very tart, mild medicinal phenols, lots of wood, tannin, grape-skin, cherries, thin body, mild crispness, finished tart and woody.

The Brett has done a good job here, perhaps too good. Was waiting for this beer to pop a bit more, still enjoyable to sip.

Clear burgundy body with little carbonation and no head formation. Very vinous aroma with plenty of acidity. Spicy oak and tobacco pops out as it warms. The palate mirrors the nose, very vinous and acidic with big tobacco notes, presumably from the cab grapes. Lightly carbonated and bone dry. Finishes with a big spicy oak character.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a hazy reddish-orange with a foamy bone colored head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with some fruity and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with fruity and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some nice aromas and flavors that make it easy to drink.

Pours a lightly hazed reddish amber with a trace pinkish head. Aroma of tart cherry, oak, red wine, and lemon. Sweet and sugary flavor, bing cherries and lemon drops with a tart, grape skin and acidic finish. Medium thick with light, fine carbonation and an acidic aftertaste.

Bottle shared thanks to starrdogg from an awesome trader in CA! Tried in order with all tracks in the series.

The color of the brew is a nice reddish brown color with an aroma highlighted by tart berry and cabernet grape. Seems to have a nice tartness without being overly in the vinegar category.

The taste follows suit to the aroma and has a burst of berry, oak, rich red wine and an overall pleasant tartness. The feel is good, but for a sour, especially from Lost Abbey, this one was actually more carbonated than I normally like.

Overall a good start to the series.

Beer pours a hazy reddish-brown with a tiny white head. Smell is lactic sour, oak, red wine and a bit of vinegar - pretty impressive. Flavor is very oaky and vinous and a malt quality that reminds me of an oud bruin, sour and a slight hint of vinegar. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied and carbonation is nice. Overall, a solid start to the box set. This one doesn't stand out as particularly awesome, but it's a nice wine-forward sour.

Lost Abbey track beer tasting.

The beer is ruby to caramel colored with a thin, broken head. The aroma offers cherries, brettanomyces, funk. The flavor is reminiscent of a Flanders out bruin with a hint of vinegar. Light but present cherries atop a brown ale malt bill. Lactic finish, with some currant notes. Light puckering sour finish with moderately low carbonation. A tasty beer.

A: poured a pale brown in color with burgundy hues in it and a thin white cap of head that left very little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: it had the signature Lost abbey bretty funk with a little lactic character, some acidity, oakiness coming through as well, a little vinous wine barrel notes and hints of cherries in the background.

T: The cherries were more apparent on the palate alongside vinous wine barrel character, oaky accents, a little vinegar type flavor, slightly acidic with a touch dark fruits and mild brown sugar/

M: the brew was medium in body with a good amount of carbonation which had a sweet, slightly fruity, vinous, oaky, mild wine barrel, funky and sour finish.

O: I have to say it was pretty solid all around with good flavors that kind of reminded me of red poppy but with a twist.

Got a chance to enjoy this one after going to Stone for Winter Storm. I happened upon the Lost Abbey on a very empty Sunday so I was able to enjoy it in somewhat peace and quiet...which is not typical for the tasting room.

The appearance was quite glorious in the Sunday sunshine: poured into a Lost Abbey stemware glass, the beer shone a beautiful deep red ruby/purple color. My bottle had little-to-no carbonation, which was fine with me. I personally am not a carbonation snob...

Aroma-wise theres a heft of the cabernet sauvigon grapes. Tartness is apparent but not overkill. It definitely hints at what's to come.

The taste is tart and it hits you immediately. This is probably one of the more accessible sours I've ever had. Being low in ABV you don't get heavy alcohol knocking you in the face. The grapes really shine in this one. It makes for a very refreshing sour, good for savoring as well.

Clear brownish-red coppery color with a light fizzy head

Nose soured brown malts, light tart fruit like cherry, berry, barrel, light funk and acid, bit vinous.

Taste tart fruit, soured brown malts, light malty, light berry like fruit and a bit of soured cherry again and hints of grape seeds or stem like earthiness, hint of caramel and brown sugar, toasty oak and earthy flavors, dry bready malt, light dry funk and light acidity.

Mouth is med to lighter bodied, bit flemmy, and decent carb.

Overall pretty good, nothing outstanding but a tasty sour.

From 02/03/12 notes. Had on tap at NOTB up in Boston, MA.

a - Pours a clear ruby red color with an inch of white head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of sour grapes, brett, light wine, tannic, oak, and earthy notes. Little funk which is nice.

t - Tastes of sour dark fruits and fruity malts, sour grapes, wine, oak, earthy notes, floral notes, brett, funk. Awesome taste; just a ton of brett and sour fruits. Step up from the nose.

m - Light to medium body and moderate to high carbonation. Crisp, and pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall I liked this one quite a bit. A pretty fruity sour beer with some nice brett, something I'd certainly like to have again. Liked this better than Veritas 10.

App- A curious mix of some rich browns with a subtle mix of marron and red. Bottle was nicely carbonated with a good 1 finger head that fell quickly.

Smell- It opened with that Lost Abbey yeast and moved to a bit of a V09 smell. A bit oaky, tannin and dried cherries. Wasn't overly aromatic but was nice and sour/tart and a bit smooth on the nose.

Taste- Seems to me the few sours I have had are more dark fruit laden than most others. More oak flows through and more grape skins. This was a bit sour and a bit lactic but still good.

Mouth- A good medium body with a nice paired medium carbonation. A bit of redwine tannins and some oak remain on the mouth.

Drink- It was pretty good. I wanted more, Its too much like the rest of the sours that they do really. I put in for the ticket. Hope I win.

Nose is tart and funky.

Bottle (2012)

The Lost Abbey
San Marcos, CA

Deep, rich red and brown, with dark, almost purple edges, with very little visible carbonation.

Tart and sweet aroma. A complex, rich aroma combining sweet cherries, tart grapes, stinging acidity, and oaken, earthy wood. A very full, rich, and powerful aroma--just about perfect.

The taste is very fruit forward, with tart grapes and cherries leading the way, moderate level of sourness, and a nice complementary earth, leather, and wood character. Low bitterness.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. There's more carbonation present upon drinking the beer than I would have thought after just viewing it. Very drinkable.

Delicious. Looking forward to the rest of the series. I would very much like to see how this bottle ages. It's a shame I couldn't buy a bottle to go.

Pours a bright, clear, ruby color with minimal head and carbonation. Smells strikingly similar to Red Poppy. Cherries, red wine, lots of oak, and a hint of red wine vinegar. There might be a little bit of grape in there, and a touch of grass. The flavor has a nice tannic feel to it with lots of oak and wine flavors. Some tartness, but not overly sour. Good combination of lactic and acetic sourness. Just a little bit of red fruit such as cherry and berry. Medium body with low carbonation.

Bottle at Lost Abbey.

A: An attractive dark crimson with a big white head. Nice color.

S: Big earth and leathery Brett notes. Oak is pronounced, blending with Cabernet grapes and the light brown beer base. There's a soft vinegar note.

T: Cabernet grapes with a pronounced leathery Brett profile. This is very tannic and dry with a big oak presence. Light lactic sourness with earth and a faint acetic acidity. The finish is lightly tart with grapes and a lot of leather.

M: Lower medium body with upper medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is dry and tannic. This sucks the moisture out of your mouth.

Overall: A very nice vinous Wild Ale. Not that sour or tart, but still nice.

Went to the tasting room last night to try this one. The place was packed with a whole bunch of drunk bus tour people, kind of annoying. Went up to the bar and ordered track 1 and they poured it into the fancy tulip glass but kept the bottle. I asked if I could get the bottle and she said that after you drink it, fill out the raffle ticket, and present your receipt, yes you can have the bottle. So I went and filled out the raffle entry form while tasting track 1.

A: Dark, reddish/ brown color, when poured into the tulip, the head did not retain for more than 10 seconds.

S: Smells of sourness, acidity or bitterness, vinegary.

T: The first thing I tasted was the sour or brett and then raisins is one thing that I kept thinking I was tasting. It had a wine characteristic to it. Come to find out, it is aged in Cab Sauv. barrels.

M: Not hard to drink, a little hard to enjoy the full flavor of the beer with all the noise and drunk people around, but still a sophisticated funky, LA style beer.

O: I would like to try this one aged and see what changes in the flavor profile and smell. I also would like to know what grains were used in this and the yeast.

Overall I hope I win the raffle at the end of track 12 to be able to taste this one again and have a really fun tasting with all of my beer drinking friends.

Served in a Patron Sinner tulip.

Deep blood red color. Kinda wine like in color. One finger of off white head. Retention and lacing are solid.

Smells fruity, lots of raspberry notes. Really funky and bretty. Quite vinous with tart jam notes.

Taste follows smell with tons of raspberry, funk, tannic grape skIn, smooth and round oaky notes with subtle vanilla notes.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, medium tartness, quite funky though with a really dry finish.
