Had @ Lost Abbey poured into a tulip.

A: A dark mahogany color, a nice pop of the cork left a little bit of head and some very nice lacing.

S: Smelled absolutely delicious. Some brett, cherry, and bourbon were prevalent.

T: Wow, not bad at all. Similar to the smell, there were hints of bourbon, but mostly sour cherry and some hint of citrus. Different from expectations considering the dark color.

MF/D: Incredibly smooth despite a moderate amount of carbonation. Wish I could've brought a few bottles home with me...

Track #2. 12.7oz bottle. No date.

Look: Iron, muddy color, thin beige lace

Smell: Aged, wood, fermented peaches, boozy cherries, funky background, daunting

Taste: Smooth, a bit creamy, matured tartness, spicy phenols, stone fruit center flesh, peach skins, sour cherries, granny smith apple bite, citrus, oaky, light bourbon, toffee and vanilla, dry, tannic finish

Insanely complex. Sneaky alcohol. Drinks dangerously. Stair way to heaven indeed. Or hell? Who cares as long as they serve good beer.

12.7 brown corked and caged bottle, no freshness date.

Cloudy brown, decent off-white lacing. Complex aroma of ripe beets, bread crust, quince paste, musty cellar, lemon pith, melon rind, wood, peach pits, and booze. Semi-crisp, creamy body, halo of bourbon, tart cherries, peach skins, nutty grain, woody dryness, faintly vinous, very warming with a woody finish.

Overly complex but I sort of love it ... all of the flavors may not mesh immediately though all comes together in the finish. A lovely sipper.

Bottle (2012)

The Lost Abbey
San Marcos, Ca

The beer pours a flat, dark brown with dark ruby edges. There is no visibility through the beer. It's dark and looks heavy and substantial--even a bit oily.

A sweet and earthy aroma, with tons of caramel and rich cherry skin character. There's a red grape aroma as well, with notes of wood and red wine. There's a bit of vanilla. While everything listed sounds marvelous, and while certainly good, it doesn't blend together nearly as nicely as hoped.

The flavor is less successful and the combination of flavors is more muddled than in the aroma. There is a good cherry skin flavor alongside caramel and a touch of acidity. Nothing blends particularly well. Perhaps there is too much going on here: cherry, peach, oak, vanilla, caramel, acid, earth, prunes, and figs. It's just too much without being pleasantly complex or very enjoyable. The flavors don't come together; everything seems to battle for dominance. Inharmonious, though drinkable. There aren't any off flavors.

Medium to full bodied with very low carbonation.

As far as barrel aged blends/sours go, this one was not particularly enjoyable. The aroma saves it from an even worse score.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Deep murky reddish brown. Small head. Thin collar.

Smell - Peach is strongest. Lots of charred oak aromas, too. Acidic smelling with some caramel sweetness behind.

Taste - Less acidic than the nose implied. Brettier, too. Peach still comes out. The caramel is completely bereft of accompanying sweetness, which is suprising. Dry finish.

Mouthfeel - Pretty sour and very dry. Medium body with plenty of carbonation.

Overall - The bright tartness is good, but I'm not convinced on how it plays out with all of the residual caramel flavors.

Hazy, ruddy body with little head formation. Unripe peach and black cherries on the nose with lesser notes of caramel and tobacco. The palate is sharply acidic and full bodied. Big lacto notes with a little harsh acetic acid behind it. Lot of peach and cherry flavor, with the robust toffee notes and booziness of Angels Share coming out in the finish. I'm liking the peach and cherry flavors here, but the acidity is a bit harsh and the blend seems a bit disharmonious.

Thanks to rudzud for allowing me to split these with him.

No head, dark slight clear mahogany dark brown molasses color. 3.75

Nose sour brown malts, strong ale malts, little candy brown malts and nutty notes, lots of sour cherries, some vanilla barrel notes, faint peach thing, light Madeira like barrel, no real alcohol, some wild notes, funk like but not a ton.4

Taste is great, super sour to start, gland exploding sour, tart fruit. Pours if big sweet candy malts, syrupy with plenty of Ángel share base with faint bourbon, light vanilla barrels, etc. Lots of tart cherries, little malt vinegar, and nice peach, generic fruit syrup, little molasses even. Finish is syrupy sticky, little booze note, more sour fruits lingering, syrupy malts. 4.25

Mouth fuller bod, syrupy as Hell, sticky flemmy, no carb, mild booze. 3.25

Overall pretty nice but there are difficulties in drinking this. 4

The pour is a rather dark amber color with a thin off-white head. Lots of tart fruit aromas to this. I get quite a bit of raisin, prune, and cherry. The peaches are strong as well. Quite a bit of barrel (vanilla and bourbon). Decently sugary/sweet. The cherries, prunes, raisins, and peaches are quite strong. The flavor is sweeter than expected. Lots of brown sugar and vanilla with a heavy dose of bourbon. The Cuvee de Tomme really comes through strongly. Quite rich and full bodied with low to medium carbonation.
