On Tap

The Lost Abbey
San Marcos, CA

Slightly hazed golden yellow with a thick near-white head that leaves rings of lace down the glass. Very pretty.

Mild aroma, though what's here is very nice: mild citrus, mild funk, earth, and wet tree bark.

The flavor is quite nice. I've had this two times now, and this on-tap pour at The Lost Abbey is significantly better and significantly more funky than the keg pour I had at the Firestone Invitational. The flavor follows the aroma, with mild citrus, moderate bitterness, and earth dominating, with distinct Brett presence, though I belive the Brett really will develop nicely.

Medium to full bodied, slightly creamy, with moderate carbonation.

Very nice. I'd love to buy a bottle of this and just forget about it for years.

375 mL bottle into a tulip

Probably the last bottle left to be opened. Was one of those brews that got left in back of the fridge and forgotten about.

Pours a cloudy, copper-tan appearance, scant carbonation or head. Grassy, funky, fruity nose, a little ripe. Flavors are sweet, funky, phenolic. Tastes more like a Belgian triple than a ‘Brett beer’, but this beer was brewed before there was such a category. Anyway, cellar has done the beer well, easy to drink with a earthy sweet finish.

Poured from a 375ml bottle into a teku. Collaboration beer between New Belgium and Lost Abbey.
100% Brettanomyces fermented.

Orange gold sunset color, subtle haze in the body. Tons of bubbles risinng up to escape, with a large white head that slowly settled and left its mark on the glass. Good lacing initially, but none after the initial head dies.

The aroma in an unexciting one for the style. I believe that age has not done favors to this beer, as usually is the case. I get hints of oxidation (despite the cork and cage) aromas of white grape juice, pear, honey, and sweet creamed corn.

The taste is quite muted, just like the smell. There is a little bit of musk here, and then a bunch of fruity qualities that come off as faded. Apple, stevia, cardboard, and the body is on the lighter side.

I'm pretty disappointed with how this beer held up. The brett didn't really take over here, and I have experienced that with brett before, where it just doesn't work the way you want it to. I would not recommend this beer, especially at this point. Past its prime and the prime probably wasn't that high.

Bright yellow, hella chunky haze throughout the entire beer, white head on top looked bleached it was so white. Aroma was bready, but not bretty. Tiny bit of lemon wedge to it.

Taste was biscuity and bready, thick almost wheat mouthfeel. Was kinda underwhelmed with this one to say the least. Brett strain too mild.

Reviewed from notes. L: Pours hazy gold with a slight orange tint under a thin, sudsy white foam cap.
S: Saisony, tangy nose with some light barnyard funk.
T: Fruit, rich, some sweetness, tropical fruit, pineapple, orange not very tart
F: Has the Brett fine soft carbonation. The texture is superb and makes the beer. Carbonation is above average, body a hair above medium light.
O: An easy to drink wild ale but not outstanding.

375 ml bottle dated 5/24/2012 (exactly 3 years ago today). Poured into a teku

Appearance: Pours a dark golden yellow with 2 fingers of a white head with good retention. Body is lightly hazy with moderate to high levels of visible carbonation.

Smell: Lots of brett character, but more fruity than funky. Pear, pineapple, red apple, spicy Belgian yeast character, banana and lightly floral.

Taste: Apple, grain, funk, hay, pineapple and a hint of spices.

Mouthfeel: Light/medium bodied with medium carbonation. Finishes dry.

Overall: I remember this being very "meh" when fresh, and while 3 years of age have brought out more of the funky/brett character, it's still just good, but nothing spectacular.

Poured from a corked & caged 375ml bottle a slightly hazed dark yellow under a 1" thick white spritzy head which fades quickly to the rim and leaves splotches of lace. Aroma is lemony, funk, wood, herbal, grass/hay and spice. Flavor is overripe peaches and apricots, along with Brett yeast. Light body and moderate carbonation. Finishes dry and yeasty.
