Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

For the past two years The Lost Abbey has released a winter barrel aged blended strong ale. This amazing blend of beer has focused on a marriage between Bourbon Barrel Aged Serpents Stout and Brandy Barrel Aged Angel’s Share. We believe it’s one of the most amazing barrel releases we do each fall.

But in the spirit of old recordings and records I started thinking what would happen if we played this one in reverse? Would we hear the Demon himself on the record? So with that, we flipped the blend on its ears and spun it backwards. The result is a blend of Brandy Barrel Aged Serpent’s Stout and some Bourbon Barrel Aged Angel’s Share.

It’s still an epic struggle between good and evil, only this time we slowed it down and played it in reverse.

Track #6. 12.7oz bottle. No date.

Look: Ink black, opaque, no head, but plenty of legs

Smell: Brandy soaked chocolate cake, raisins, char, alcohol

Taste: Viscous, creamy, sweet, boozy, brandy, port, peppery, chocolate, black treacle, cookie dough, roasty, charred raisins, mild oxidation, lingering molasses sweetness

This is one hell of a deliciously evil nightcap. Robust, boozy, flavorful and moreish.

12.7 brown caged and corked bottle, no freshness date.

Black, opaque and no head. Has legs. Brandy, burnt sugar, figgy, lots of wood, spice, cocoa, and faint citrus peel in the nose. Fullish body, creamy, oaky, brandy, creamy sherry, peppery alcohol, very warming, boozy, burnt raisins, slightly viscous, woody slowly drying finish.

By far the best out of the bunch within the first six tracks. Not for its size obviously but for the execution of putting this brew together.

Bottle (2012)

The Lost Abbey
San Marcos, CA

Just about black in color with a very small dark brown head. This leaves nearly no stick down the glass, but that can be expected with a barrel-aged treat this high in ABV.

Rich, sweet, and earthy aroma of melted milk and dark chocolates, Raisinets, and delicious chocolate-covered cherries. There's also some wood and brandy elements shining through as well. Fantastic.

The flavor is similar to the aroma, with big notes of rich, earthy, bittersweet chocolate pushing everything else to the side, with brandy-soaked raisin and cherry flavors complementing the chocolate nicely. There's also lingering flavors of bourbon, wood, and mild roast.

Medium to full body with low carbonation. Decadent.

Fantastic. A welcome departure from the other Box Set beers; this was delicious.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Mostly flat and very dark, but just shy of black. Leggy and viscous.

Smell - Lots of brandy and bourbon. Toffee and caramel. Dark roasted malts. Boozy.

Taste - Strong brandy and vanilla. Chocolate comes behind it. The finish is boozy with a nice blend of sweet dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel - Very boozy. The body drops off a bit. Low carbonation.

Overall - Barrel aged sugar bomb. Very tasty.

Syrupy dark brown body, verging on black. Smells awesome, very similar to this year's deliverance but more refined, less boozy. Lot of toffee, chocolate and vanilla on the nose. Rum raisin. Big bourbon and brandy notes. Palate is excellent. Bourbon soaked chocolate cake, dark fruit, toffee, spicy oak. Full bodied with noticeable but mellow alcohol. Outstanding stuff.

Thanks to rudzud for getting these, split with him.

No head, nice legs, pretty much pitch black color.

Nose big strong malts, syrupy sweet chewy dark malts, big fudgey cocoa, caramel candies, some sweet brandy like fruity booze, candy and barrel notes, mild nutty caramel candy like, and little fluffy nougat.

Taste brings sweet malts, syrupy dark strong malts and syrupy candy, toffee and nutty and plenty of caramel, little fluffy nougat, nice fudgey cocoa and dark malts, with vanilla barrel, plenty more fruity brandy. Syrupy candy, mixed everything strong and dark ale. Finish sweet syrupy, light booze, light cocoa, fudgey, candy bar, fruity brandy, toffee, etc.

Mouth is fuller bod, light booze on the back end, no carb though.

Overall really nice, great blend of strong ale and dark ale, nice brandy barrel, booze hidden fairly well, just lack of carbonation that's the only real downfall.

Pours black in color with a thin khaki colored head. Rich and decadent nose to this. Bourbon and brandy with tons of vanilla. A definite booziness, but it’s enjoyable. Plenty of chocolate, some dark fruit, and a touch of roasted malt. The flavor is quite sweet with lots of molasses, chocolate, vanilla, and dark fruit. The flavors of the brandy and bourbon are very pronounced and enjoyable as well.
