375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.
Appearance - Tiny head. No pop on opening. Murky brown.
Smell - Lots of cognac barrel. Vanilla. Lots of caramel and raisins.
Taste - Loads of cognac again. Great cognac flavor. Buckets of toffee and deep brown sugar. Hot finish.
Mouthfeel - Boozy up front, mostly from the amount of liquor flavor it took on from the barrel. Not quite as warming as the booziness suggests. Well carbonated despite the lack of a pop.
Overall - Not very complex, but the barrel flavors make up for it.

Muddy red color, no head. Nose is interesting, an odd mix of bitter citrus and cherry, backed by booze, barrel and caramel. This does smell surprisingly close to a Manhattan. Palate is similar, bitter citrus with tart cherry, oak and brandy. Fairly dry for such a big barleywine. Finishes pretty dry, semi-bitter. An odd but enjoyable beer.

Poured at FOBAB.
A: Pours a murky brown with no head.
S: Aroma brings grapey cognac, syrupy cherry flesh, tannic vanilla, toffee, ghost of old hops.
T: Taste brings mild cidery hoppiness, thick raisin, more cognac, a bit woody.
M: Thick-bodied with very light carbonation.
O: This beer is a cognac bomb. The complexity of the ingredients can't shine through the barrel.

Bottle into stemware.
A: Dark reddish brown with a big beige head. Scattered lacing.
S: Raisin blends with plum, cherry, cognac, and oak. There's a little vanilla in there and a touch of orange with brown sugar, bread, and caramel.
T: Raisin, cognac, oak, some lightly sour cherry. Malt is bready and robust. Light alcohol presence. A little plum and orange. Tannic fruity finish.
M: Lower full body with lower high carbonation. Creamy, sticky mouthfeel with warming.
Overall: Pretty nice and a successful beer version of an old fashioned.
