On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

The body is a hazy, somewhat murky red, auburn, and light brown with a thin khaki head and regular lacing down the glass.

Sweet aroma consisting mainly of caramel and toffee, bread, and some piney hops.

Strong hop bitterness, caramel and toffee sweetness, some fruit character, all awash with a sharp, biting alcohol component.

Medium to thick bodied and the alcohol seems particularly strong and harsh throughout.

If the alcohol wasn't so present, I think this could be a very fine beer. There's a lot of interesting sweet and even juicy, fruity elements throughout, but they're difficult to fully appreciate underneath the hot alcohol.

This beer is a mystery to me. I found bottles at The Bruery Provisions shop and was interested to try an Airdale beer. Looking it up on the Internet gave me no results. It's not on the Airdale website and the bottle just makes it more confusing by saying it was brewed and bottled in Irvine when Airdale is in San Diego. I'm confident it's their beer. Bottle says it's 9% ABV, 77IBU and 17 SRM. There is no info as to what style it is but I assumed because of the taste, color, and aroma it is an Imperial Red. Poured into my Bruery Snifter

Has a nice hazy amber/red color. Almost garnet. Film white head with ok lacing.

Aroma is a nice amber red type aroma. Bit of caramel. Slight hop aroma by based on the IBU's and the style I feel it could use alot more hop aroma.

Taste is good. Tastes like a pretty good Red with a nice hop bite. Could use a bit more hop flavor. They hid the ABV well though.

Mouthfeel is smooth with a nice bite in the finish. Good carb.

Overall a decent beer. Would buy it again if I saw it on tap somewhere or something. Solid.

From 22 oz to stein

The mysterious Angry Panda pours a clear red-amber in color, forming a frothy head that leaves lacing all over the stein glass. Although somewhat subdued for a 9% libation, the nose is floral, citrusy hops and sweet, caramelly malts. It's flavors follow, but are more complex with fresh, bitter hops meeting the palate first. The sweet and toasty malts are quickly in tow; by mid-sip, the beer leans to the sweet side of the palate while keeping its crisp, fresh overtone. A rich, oily complexion supports the layered flavors and reminds of the high ABV.

Angry Panda was introduced shrouded in secrecy and speculation. Besides the panda that looks like it just passed Top Gun and is about to whoop some ass, the bottle offers few clues. If this is an American amber, it doesn't taste like anything I've had. Hop-forward and rich while crisply clean, this reminds me as much of a rye ipa as an amber. Whatever it is, it's delicious.

Maybe we need an "Imperial" style for everything, tho I have not yet seen a Double Chile beer. This is clearly a big red, as PeprSprYoFace styles it, but well over the usual ABV limit for reds. A real coppery color in the chalice, decent lacing, well carbonated in the mouth. The interesting thing about this beer is the nose. Very aromatic, hoppy and spicy. I can't say what fruit that is, but woody and tropical.

Hot with alcohol. In fact that seems to be the aftertaste. Not unpleasant, as long as you accept you're drinking some kind of malt cocktail rather than a normal beer. Sort of a canned peaches liqueur. Grainy aftertaste. Rich hoppy flavor for a while, but gives it up to the fruity booziness. Goes down nicely, as a late-nite sipper. Definitely unusual and worth a try.
