This a dark mild? Only if you're talking Beacon Hill (Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild)! Hence the name...

I'm not sure what the history is with the switch in breweries in England, but I can say this, Tom's version is more roasty than the original (I haven't had the Beacon Hotel version yet). It is, however, right up there as far as overall flavor goes. It's more like a porter than a mild. But then the Sarah Hughes was much more than a mild all of those years ago!

It delivers lots of caramel and roastiness with a subtle hint of chocolate. Leafy and floral hops balance it along with a splash of yeasty fruitiness and a balanced bitterness. And it's easy to drink as it's rich in flavor without a lot of body.

Really enjoyable and remarkably drinkable in its depth of flavor and charm. Worth seeking out!

This beer was a dark cola color with some purple plum around the edges with a very thin collar of off white.

Smells of concord grapes, raisins and a splash of port with a distant undertone of celery.

Tastes of concord and red grapes too with ambiguous leafy greens. There's a dry coffee and smokey wood edge to this that adds a tremendous amount of balance.

Feels light and dry with and aggressive but small carbonation.

Not too bad, but pretty heavy on the fruit for my liking. Not that that's a bad thing.
