A thick creamy head sits atop the opaque blackness of this traditional dry Irish stout. Roasted chocolate and coffee notes make this beer a great treat.

Served a little too cold, but not by much. The appearance was the best part of this beer. It was very dark mahogany brown, almost black, with a small, medium brown head. The foam remained a thick film throughout and left almost unbroken sheets of lace on the opposite side of the glass. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there.

There wasn't much going on in the nose, which was a hint of things to come. Weak coffee was appreciated, but that's about it. The flavor was underpowered as well and consisted of roasted coffee beans and very little else.

Every time I'd try to get a handle on the flavor profile, it would vanish in a watery muddle. The finish was short and uneventful. The mouthfeel didn't contribute at all. It was thin and lacklustery bubbled; not at all appropriate for a stout.

Broad Axe Stout might be good to introduce a light beer drinker to the world of dark beer, but anyone serious about authenticity should look elsewhere. Not horrible, just not much there to enjoy.

Appearance - deep translucent garnet brown, minimal head

Smell - dark chocolate, roast, dark fruits

Taste - chocolate, followed by light roast, and a hint of anise

Mouthfeel - watery, but still quite smooth and drinkable

Overall - not a bad stout, flavors are there but watered down

A smooth and creamy stout. Unfortunately, it's lacking on taste and aroma. There's some chocolate and roasted barely in there, but its lost behind the creamy body. Looks and feels great, but just doesnt have enough in the flavor department. Give this to someone who likes guinness or likes creamy, low-flavored beers.

Dark black with a creamy head an decent retention. Smell is not real strong, but I could pick up some coffee and a bit of chocolate. The flavor is also light coffee and chocolate. Nothing extraordinary, but decent. Creamy, medium bodied, decent drinkability.

Served in an oversized pint & on nitro, the beer is a black with brown highlights. It has a very thick & dark tan head.

The aroma is subdued roasted malts and a bit of coffee. This could be impacted by either the nitro or the chilly temperature.

The taste has the dark roasted malts, chocolate and coffee notes you would expect but everything is dialed down a notch and a bit washed out. Is the nitro or the recipe killing this one?

The mouth is soft yet a bit thin. Not a repeater for me.

Granite City is a brewpub in a variety of different locations. I went to the Sioux Falls to sample their stuff

Broadaxe Stout is listed as an Dry Stout. It has an impressive appearance with a midnight black color with a decent tan head and good lacing. When tipped the dark color remained as the beer displaces. So, good color. The smell was limited but you really have to look for it. Really the only thing I pick up is the roasted malt.

The taste is stronger in chocolate flavor but limited roasted qualities are noticed as well. Broadaxe Stout was a little watered down for a dry stout. The malt backing was missing as well. Also the beer has slightly hoppy flavor that was somewhat sweet like a coco.

The body was light and the carbonation was relatively high for the style. Overall this could be a good beer but definitely needs more of strong malt billed to be really good.
