Oatmeal Stout, on tap at Jefferson St. Brewing Company, as part of a tasting flight. This review is a few months old, but I'm just now catching up on my backlog from this particular period.

Appearance: A filtered onyx brown, capped by a moderately tanned tenth of a finger of head that wasn't still around by the time this one landed in front of me, with only a faint dense ring left in its stead. Transparent when held to the light, and very much so near the edges, suggesting a watery body. Some good stickyness provided by that oat protein addition, though.

Aroma: Cocoa powder sneaks in around the edges, though this one's malt backbone suggests mostly coffee, a faint wholesome but neutral background note (clearly oats), and astringent roastiness.

Taste: A dark, toasted malt foundation, perhaps a little hollow and hinting less at full roast coffee than at day old coffee grounds, dry toast, and faint bittersweet cocoa. The wholesome oat kick is definitely there, but it does little to make up for the dim malts. Not very vibrant.

Mouthfeel: The oats do a little for it, providing a slight amount of body, but its still overcarbonated. Even but way too big.

Drinkability: This beer would be quite drinkable if it were a little less watery, more flavorful, and had a little less going on in the carbonation department (a critique of all of JSBCs beers). Still, not a bad oatmeal stout.

A-Deep, chestnut copper with a thin, light tan head that hung on fairly well and left spotty lace.

S-Healthy roasted malt, light espresso and a touch of dark chocolate.

T-Fairly rich dark roasted malt and coffee combo. Finishing hints of dark chocolate and a touch of earthy bitterness.

M-Medium bodied and this being and oatmeal stout a bit lacking for my taste. Good lingering coffee bitterness and building dryness saves the day.

D-Overall a fairly solid brew. Good aroma and a nice flavour profile helps rescue the timid body. A good house stout to introduce those to this classic style.

On tap at the brewpub, 2/6/10.

A-A little light in color, this beer is a medium brown, maybe even a deep amber.

S-Sweet roasted malt, maybe a hint of chocolate.

T-A bit roasty, no real oatmeal character, not much depth or sweetness. Ephemeral.

M-Light bodied and rather thin.

D-Not bad but not special or memorable in any way.

On tap @ the Jefferson St. Brewing Company (Lynchburg, VA) on 2/6/10.

This initially pours a deep brown but holding it up to the light reveals a clear dark amber body, topped with a thin off-white covering of foam. This stays creamy around the edges, leaving a fizzy cascade of foam behind. The aroma smells of roasted chocolate malts, with a dash of coffee smooth oats. This is definitely putting out a bit of a sticky sweetness in the nose.

The taste is a tad lighter feeling than the aroma, with notes of roast and coffee and a flush of toffee and green citrus in the back. Hops prickle up the front of the profile, leaving a lot of dryness behind in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied overall but comes across as touch thin for a Stout in spots. The carbonation has a farily large sharp creaminess to it but stays relatively smooth in the mouth from the oatmeal.

This was a bit of a disappointment for me, as the taste unfortunately just didn't put out enough flavor as the aroma did. A decent take on an Oatmeal Stout but this was actually my least favorite of the ones that I tried here.

One of several poured from a growler into a tulip.

Appearance: Would be nice for a porter, but way to light for a stout. Its dark brown, but lighter than a CocaCola. Nice light brown head, but it disappears quickly. Leaves some spots of lacing.

Smell: Toasty with coffee notes. Pretty dry smelling. Not bad at all.

Taste: Roasty and slighty burnt dark malts. A little sweetness and a slightly bitter finish. Nothing at all wrong, but nothing to write home about.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, but thin for a stout.

Drinkability: Well, this is WAY better than I expected. It tastes pretty good, but again, its not that exciting. A reasonable sessionable stout. I'll finish the growler.
