Sterkens Dubbel Ale is a clear, deep, ruby-red with boiling carbonation and a walnut halo. My Bornem Chalice can barely contain the dense, almond froth.

The scent of freshly-baked, rich, sweet, wheat bread is accented with caramel and light spruce. Leathery tones carry notes of raisin, fig and other dried brown fruits.

The light sweetness of malt outweighs the hops with a hint of vanilla cola. A quick, strong finish settles out to a lingering, subtle, salty sweetness with a touch of alcohol.

This Dubbel has a light body with a dry texture, lively carbonation, and some metallic notes with light alcohol.

A great start does not insure a great follow-through. Probably best with food.

Overall - as others wrote, with so many great trappist beers why drink an also ran one?
But even as 2nd tier, it's damn good beer. My bottled was drink by 2015 so may be a bit old since these have 5+ lives.

A: A beautiful cola color and wine-like experience, with an energetic head that fades to nada, and no lacing.
S: grassy. cola and tea like. A bit weak on aroma. Almost like a wine slightly past it's prime, and this is at cellar temp.
T: Very wine like. But sweet, cola/tea like, laid back, a very nice long tingly finish as it should, which dries out the initial caramel, chocolatey personality. A candy shop on a very wet spring day.
MF: Good, wine like, good finish.
Mid pack beer, at Beligian Dubbel prices, look elsewhere. Would definitely include in a taste off and I'd try again. Still a mid-Belgique is still a decent beer.

Paid a bit much for this 4 bucks for the single. Into a pint glass.

A - Blegh a ton of floaties in my glass thick and chunky. Color is a deep copper brown with just a 1/4 inch of head that pulls back to a mild lace ring.
S - Slightly sour, notes of wine grapes musky raisins and some figs. Has a sweet edge to it.
T - Has some sour notes but it's rather enjoyable like a Flemish Brown ale. Notes of sweet malts mostly fruity raisins and figs. Finish is rather sweet as well.
M - Light to medium not sure of the ABV (not listed) but its smooth.

Overall not sure of the age but the sediment really kills the experience of this beer. It's actually a very drinkable but the price point I don't think I would ever revisit.

Interesting beer from Sterkens. The aroma smells like a sour, the taste is good with a slight sour bite to it. Good carbonation with a thin mouth feel. This is a quality offering and I would buy this again. I look forward to trying other brews from this brewery.

Bottom Line: Worth a look.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Look – medium brown color, somewhat murky, with about three fingers’ worth of tan-colored foam that dissipates slowly.

Smell – malty, sweet, syrupy, interesting blend of hops, but not necessarily “hoppy”-smelling.

Taste – malty and a bit musky, maybe a bit phenolic and earthy. The middle gets a little bitter, but it mellows out pretty fast. The finish is actually pretty sweet.

Mouthfeel – pretty well balanced, not leaning more toward either the watery or creamy sides.

Overall – not a bad brew at all. Good taste, and interesting to think about.

A-Reddish copper with a 2 finger head of both compressed tight and larger bubbles.

S-Sweet Jesus!! I like this one already. This is one beer I never need to drink, just smell. Lots of dried fruit smells, prunes, dates and a touch of a cherry note(not sure if this is just me). Lots of malt background too. Smells a lot like a Chimay Grande Riserve.

T-I am getting a lot of carmel flavor with malt then a bit of the dried fruit which I smelled and maybe even a touch of that cherry/sour note I smelled. This will rank high on my list.

M-a heavier body beer and a bit syrupy but is very enjoyable on this slow sipper!!

I would buy this again and may even pick up a case at the price I paid!!

Poured from .33l bottle to Jever flute. No freshness date and no indication of alcohol content ? Tastes alcoholic for the style, maybe 8 ?

A: Pours clear brown with flaky yeast deposits somehow in my bottle in spite of careful pouring... Nice head that leaves suggestive lacing.

S: Malty and caramelized

T: Mild hop bitterness prominently balanced against the sweet dark malt. Simple design but superbly balanced and well rounded flavours.

M: Feels dry and highly attenuated in spite of the caramelized maltiness.

Overall a great dubbel well worth seeking out.

Re-review on 11/17/11:
Still highly impressed by this. The yeast character is really strong but super pleasant. Incredibly impressive beer.

This is a site for sore eyes. A perfect pour. Beautiful in the glass. It is absolutely smooth, with perfect shaped bubbles. I didn't want to drink it - it looked that good.

Of course, it must be drunk, and it is pretty smooth. A litle dark, and the aftertaste reminds you that you singed up for Belgian. This really is a great experience to drink. A great Belgian.

I picked this bottle up from New Beer Dist. in LES. Honestly I wasn't expecting too much, a relatively cheap $2.50 price tag, and it was something I hadn't seen before. Gotta say I was pleasantly surprised!

The beer pours a medium ruddy brown into a goblet with a nice creamy looking two finger eggshell head. Good retention and a strong spicy smell.

What really surprises me about this beer is how dry it is. I was expecting a standard sweetish dubble, but this is different. Nice strong fruity malts like a standard dub, but not sweet at all really. Dare I say a little Hoppy? yeah I think so! I really like this beer!

The mouthfeel is creamy but still well carbonated, leading to a really pleasurable overall experience. I definitely recommend this one, a real nice surprise.

Have had a bottle of this sitting in my fridge for like 6 months now so I figured it was finally time to open it. The bottle was left over from a 4 pack that I got on my vacation to South Carolina in mid August of last year and I brought back this bottle with me. Don't recall ever seeing this beer for sale around here. Poured out of an 11/2 oz bottle into my oversized wine glass. This beer pours a hazy medium copper brown color with lots of yeasty chunks coming into my glass. Off-white head is about 1/2 inch when poured, eventually settling to a nice thick ring lining the inside of the glass and some decent surface coating. Not much lace though. Aromas of caramel and dark fruit such as raisin, plum, and apple are all present. Nice sweet caramel malt flavor upfront along with the aforementioned dark fruit and a hint of banana, a bit of Belgian candy sugar and a slight touch of spice. No discernible hops whatsoever. Has a crisp, smooth, creamy, medium to full boded mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. I did feel the mouthfeel was a bit too thin for this beer. Not a bad beer, but I wish the flavors were a bit stronger overall. Not something I wouldn't drink again by any means, but I certainly have had much better beers of this style.

Eric
