Ran through some of the IPAs brewed at Al's of Hampden a week or so ago. Catching up on reviews now. Let me tell you something, go drink their beer. They have some real brewing geniuses in the making there.

A: Hazy golden brown pour with a few fingers of white head. Retention isn't great, but a nice amount of sticky lacing is present.

S: Very citrusy aroma, not a lot of bitterness going on. Very nice balance here as the ABV is only slightly noted.

T: Man, how is this beer 13% ABV?? Delicious. Bitter hops, apricots, citrus, crazy balanced, hop bomb. 4x IPA and I are going to have to become better friends. Nice malt undertones to hold it together and just enough booze to let you know it's there.

MF: You could drink this until you passed out, which wouldn't take long. Dry finish. Thick on the palate and carbonated well.

O: Homerun. This beer is awesome.

At Al's in a snifter.

A: A 4x IPA, huh? I'm down with that after traversing Wildwood's big trail. This one is hazy, a thick-looking ale with a thin white head. As murky as a good hop-bomb should be.

S: Wow, that's a lot of hops. The apricot and citrus elements stand out, mindnumbingly strong. The hoppiness is formidable, citrus to the nth degree, resulting in a that syrupy feel. The intense fruitiness is worth the price of a snifter.

T: Freshly squeezed hop juice; this ale is deceptively strong. Apricot and citrus, grapefruit and orange, are strong and rich, more hops that may reasonably belong in an ale. Caramel provides a balancing act, tenuous as it may be, as the ale isn't really balanced. The hop juiciness is something else, wickedly strong. The apricot aspect softens the bite while upping the citrus. Boozy but not overpoweringly so. Arck Angel is on par with Hop Test Citra as the best of Pizza Boy.

M: Clean and bold, assertively and abrasively hoppy but very approachable. I wasn't planning to like this beer as much as I did. Well done Al.

Pours a deep amber, almost red color with a very nice foamy white head that disappears quickly.

The scent is dominant of citrus hops. Grapefruit, lemon, some notes of orange are also noticeable.

The taste is similar to the scent, lots of citrus. Very bitter citrus hops, grapefruit, lemon, and oranges.

Full body, sort of a dry sticky feel, moderate carbonation.

This was a pretty tasty beer, surprisingly balanced with such a high abv.

Served on tap at Al's of Hampden in Enola, PA

A: Pours a murky dark golden yellow in color with some hints of brown and orange highlights along with light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall off-white head that very slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a couple of small slightly thicker patches and a thick ring at the edges of the glass (showing very good head retention). Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of citrus hops - I can detect grapefruit, orange, tangerine, and lemon in that order of strength/intensity. Very slight hints of some tropical/pineapple hops and some bitterness in the aroma.

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong amount of caramel malt sweetness to help balance out the huge amount of hop flavors in this beer. There are flavors of citrus hops including grapefruit, orange, tangerine, and lemon. Additionally there are some tropical/pineapple hop flavors and just a hint of bitterness in the finish.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly sticky with some moderate dryness in the finish.

O: Easier to drink than I expected with it being a 4x IPA and the rather high ABV but the alcohol is extremely well hidden and the beer has a very good balance to it. Nice complexity to the flavor makes this one real enjoyable. Definitely one to try again.

What the heck is a Quad IPA anyway? Let's just call this a DIPA for purposes of comparison.

Appearance is a bright copper color with a thin layer of head that dissipated very quickly. The essence of grapefruits and hops dominate the nose. The flavor is both fruity and malty with hints of orange, mango and apricot.

As far as hoppiness, I don't think that it quite ranks with the best DIPAs out there. Still there is something quite enjoyable about this offering even if it does not rise to the level of "hop bomb."

What we have here is a tasty and complex big beer that does not get overwhelmed by the alcohol. That is a rarity and makes this a pretty special tasting experience.

On tap at Al's the other day.

The beer pours a slightly hazy, peach orange color with good head retention and lacing. On the nose I get considerable orange citrus and pine, coupled with some noticeable tropical fruit. The flavor profile is pretty sweet, and seems to overwhelm the hoppy bitterness in this boozy beer. Frankly, this beer tends to remind of Founder's Devil Dancer, and at least for me, that's not a good thing. Still, considering the alcohol, this beer was not as hot as I was expecting. In any event, I thought the tropical fruit and high alcohol tended to wear out the palate all too quickly, with not nearly enough hoppy bitterness to counter it (even though this really is a pretty hoppy beer). Mouthfeel is fairly full, with a long, malty, slightly bitter (and slightly hot) finish.

While not a terrible beer by any stretch of the imagination, ultimately this was just too boozy and sweet for me.

App- A very glowing orange with only a small 1/2 finger of head. Very juice like in terms of hazy and clairty. Only a couple dots of cling.

Smell- Wow was this vibrant! Grapefruits, tropical fruit notes mixed with hops and a slight nose of bitter.

Taste- This was a good hoppy beer. Was very lush and rich in terms of tropical fruit notes and then moved into a bit of a small bitter note. For the size of this beer you didnt feel it at all.

Mouth- A nice medium body with a good bubbly medium carbonation. A very fruit residual note with hops.

Drink- A very well layered and high ABV beer. This had a huge tropical flavor and I loved it. It was very lush and not overly bitter. Great beer.
